SYNERGIST SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 1986 On a September day in 1982, we Seniors passed for the first time under the art deco and through the doors of Science High to begin our high school careers. Little did we realize then that the artwork actually symbolized our education. The torch, the books, and the scales represent learning. But these symbols are held by people. The human factor brings life to the world of academics. People make Science High live. We meet between classes and reveal that we are not just students interested only in intellectual pursuits, but also real people. We share the moments that make us enjoy life with laughter and joy. We grow with each other like brothers and sisters — a family of friends. The friendships built at Science High are as solid as the mortar and bricks that went into the construction of the school. These friendships are solidified on the stairways, in the locker rooms, and in the hallways. The friendships will last a lifetime because we have all shared in the trials and tribulations of daily school life. The strength of our school is symbolized in the unity of its students. You can never be lonely when you have friends. Thieves will steal your heart, but friendship mends it. Trust is hard to come by, but friendship can afford it. Friendship is the sunshine that brightens up your day. BASKETBALL November 27, 1985 School years are filled with traditions. At Science High, the annual Jr.-Sr. boys' basketball game has usually been the initial intramural sports activity. This year s game was a hard-fought battle which gave the crowd plenty of opportunities to cheer and roar. And roar they did! The final score showed the Juniors victorious, but the Seniors played with intensity. The most important thing was to give people a definite idea of who I was. So I tried to find myself, but I kept looking in the wrong places. I tried to imitate Seniors. I wanted people to see me around a lot of friends. I talked loud. Most importantly, I wanted people to think that I was anything but a Freshman. But. I defeated my purpose because by acting the way I did. I showed people exactly what I didn't want them to know: I was afraid and insecure. I've come to realize that I cannot create someone. I cannot look at other people and say, ‘ That's me.'' I must look inside myself. People will judge me by my actions, and if I try to be someone I'm not. they'll think that I'm a fake. The real me is inside. It's in my heart and in the way I feel about things. Once I straighten out my emotions. I’ll start to grow up. I can then accept myself. I will then reach the day when I love the special individual I am. This second season produced a 16-8 overall record and an appearance in the Group 1 North Jersey Section 2 State Tournament. The season's highlights included an exciting 5-1 start and a thrilling 6-2 finish. Once again Science was victorious in a season opening tournament, this time in the Summit Shoot-out. Games against some powerful teams proved that the Chargers were for real. An opening round victory in the State Tournament was the crowning point of the season. The hard work, the intense desire to succeed, and the determination to play well produced this magnificent record. To the players and their coach.
