Science High School celebrates its tenth anniversary and takes its rightful place as a viable and recognized institution of learning, an Institution that has gained recognition for its excellence as well as for its uniqueness. Few remember, however, the pains that accompanied its birth. Yet. a struggle it was. and continues to be, though not without its lighter moments. Who can forget, for example, the time Mr. Korzennik's class caught fire, the time when a student pulled the shower handle in Mrs. Hand's office flooding the first floor, or the time when Mr. Petitti got a lesson in sex education when he turned around to face the board at a faculty meeting and discovered that sex education notes had been left on the board. It was our sense of humor — teachers' as well as students' — that pulled us through. 56 In the beginning. Science shared its location with other tenants. We were small and did not require much room. The first year, there were only sixty-five students and eight teachers The first graduating class consisted of only twenty-three students; we did not even have a principal. Our first director was Mr. Morris Lerner whose vision and leadership convinced us that we could be what we wanted to be Today. Science has approximately six-hundred terrific students, which makes us the smallest school in the system. And. although ten years have passed, and we still do not have an adequate cafeteria, and we still have to go to the Y.W M.C.A. for gym. and the auditorium still will not hold more than a third of the student body.
