History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time. It illumines reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity. fn tlje reuniting... 40 Rector Street was a part of the Ballantine Brewery. Several architectural features still remain from that initial stage of this building's history. Few school buildings have had such an unusual beginning. After the brewery operations were transferred to another location, the building was remodeled as a school. Within its walls were housed several distinctive schools: The N.J. Law School. 1908; Newark Institute of Arts and Sciences. 1910; The Mercer Beasley Law School. 1912; Seth Boyden School of Business. 1926; Dana College. 1930. In 1936. these different schools were combined, and they gave rise to the University of Newark. On April 30. 1946. he New Jersey legislature passed an act incorporating the University of Newark with Rutgers, the State University, and the school became Rutgers-Newark. Rutgers left Rector Street in 1973 for its new complex. Science High, formed in 1974 by a coalition of Newark Board of Education and the Council for Higher Education in Newark, provided intensive science instruction and a comprehensive curriculum for Newark's students. The school spent its first year at Central High School. When Rutgers vacated this Rector Street address. Science High moved in. Still in the process of renovating to suit the purposes of a 4 year high school. Science High has expanded its student enrollment and its faculty and staff. From brewery to college to university to Science High, this structure has truly had a varied and interesting history. Now it is the home of over 600 students and 60 staff members. May it have a long future as an institution providing high quality education to Newark's youth. 5
