Shakespeare We. the class of 1980. decided to dedicate this yearbook. in its entirety, to a woman whom we all know and bug Mrs. Hand. She may not have been aware of our appreciation of her presence until the college applications awaiting her review, and the secondary school reports awaiting completion, began to accumulate on her desk. We sincerely believe that we are fortunate to have such a diverse counselor. Before this school year. Mrs. Hand had become thoroughly acquainted with many of our personalities by teaching science classes and counseling those students that she encountered. For many of us. it was difficult to cope with maturation while simultaneously preparing for a higher education. She often provided aid in the frustrating search for a clearer path to the future. Joanne R. Hand B.A.; M.A.. Newark State College A COUNSELOR AND A FRIEND. As underclassmen, we focused upon “Joanne’s Nut House” as a haven where the ambiance was not totally academic. It became a place where, for once, we determined the atmosphere. The move from the stockroom, to the second floor, and finally to the third floor, never changed the feelings we’ve shared. Her space has been our space, too. ADMINISTRATION For the very true beginning of her wisdom is the desire of discipline: and the care of discipline is love. The Apocrypha Martha Shurn Adams B.A.. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT THE Phys. Ed. at the ‘ Y’ brings together students from every class. It’s a decisive break from the strictly academic pursuits at the other end of Rector St. For this reason it is more often than not the exception is always inclement weather when the trek is literally an expedition — a place to enjoy. SWIMMING The Swimming program, under the direction of Ms. Joanne Bopp. utilizes the pool at the Y each day during the fourth period. Students wind up with the course by chance in their schedules. It’s not uncommon to have accomplished swimmers, beginners, and nonswimmers in the same class. Learning becomes a shared experience with the excitement of accomplishing one's goals which are apparent to everyone. 43 SOFTBALL 79 THE CHAMPIONS: T.K ALL STARS Mr. Ballin. Teams were developed by the students. Four teams competed weekly to determine a champion. The T.K. All Stars finished the season with a nearly perfect record. Mr. Ballin did a commendable job in organizing the activity and giving so freely of his time. The sport was one that drew a lot of spectators and created spring afternoons for just getting together. The last day of the season was set aside for competition with the faculty, who lost to a strong student team 44 TRACK SCIENCE HIGH IN CENTRAL: Standing: Ed McCathcrn. Deborah Kemp. George Chambers. With the mention of Science High School, an invincible academic record is the first thought in anyone's mind. Alas, a school does not gain recognition solely from these achievements. With the mention of sponsored athletics at Science High, all minds draw a blank and the facial expressions relay feelings of stupor. '1 is a sad story, that of the athletic affiliation of Science High with Central High School. Despite the quantity and quality of the participation of Science High students on Central’s teams, our beloved school does not receive the recognition due. We certainly hope that in the future, this matter does not continue to go unnoticed by those officials who could effect a change. This year, we are pleading for recognition of our students' participation in Central’s sports. Once this request is satisfactorily fulfilled, we will ask for our own teams. 47 WE SHALL BE HEARD BASKETBALL GREG SPANN, for a layup, at Central, for Central. The Bomb Squad, which represented the Class of ‘80 for four years, jelled into a mighty adversary on the court. Star players included Greg. Van Thompson. Keith Dowdell, and Gavin Cave. An outstanding bench provided a margin for victory. ■Ml The competition for these men should have been interscholastic, not just intramural, crowd proved that spirit is alive and well at Science High. Although the records show that the Senior team always wins, the Juniors kept the game exciting. Mr. Ballin coached the Seniors; Mr. Levy, the Juniors. Mr. Barrone and Mr. Price had their fitness tested as referees. MASQUERADE DISCO Devils, mummies, and fairies alike, all came down to the Trinity Cathedral gym to groove to the heat of the music in celebration of Halloween. Whether mummified, in pampers, in togas, or from their grandparents' closets. the community of characters made this affair a success. If we — and now' I mean the relatively conscious w hites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on. or create, the consciousness of the others — do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world. James Baldwin 1962 Almost twenty years later, let that be your constant summons: to change the history of the world. My very best wishes as you pursue your dreams. Godspeed, best class. Jeanne N.
