ADMINISTRATION PAUL E. HARTRANFT High School Principal The year l949 is a challenging time for young people to graduate from high school. Peace has not yet come officially to the world. The differences between the two major ideas of government that are found in the world today have threatened a new conflict. The many outstanding advances in the field of science have put zest into our living but have also created many new situations. The atomic age is appearing which will greatly change our way of life in many ways. This is the time in which men's souls are tried, but it is also the time to show the fiber of which men are made. Your basic training is completed. You will now be on your own. That will be true if you continue your education or step into industry. In the case of most of you your capabilities will be revealed to you as you grow through experience and further training. Seniors, all of the fields of endeavor will create problems in your way of living but they will also bring opportunities of many varieties. The manner in which you use your opportunities will indicate the measure of success or failure for each of you. Success comes to those who are alert, trained and who exercise the initiative to grasp the situation when it arises, The motto of the class of 1949 is 'Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers . Your success will finally be measured by the amount of wisdom which lingers when knowledge comes. 8

CHRISTMAN Supervising Principal Greetings To The Class CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes to you, members of the class of 1949, as you near the final day of your public school career. The hope is expressed that the community and state may have served you well in providing learning experiences through which you could become fitted for the early privileges of citizenship. There are, however, responsibilities which every good citizen assumes in a democracy and you are admonished to discharge them ably and well. We expect that you have come to appreciate and treasure the freedom en- joyed in America, the last bastion of individual liberty in the world. May we urge you to keep and improve the faith of your fathers and always remember that liberty is never completely won but must, at times, be sternly defended, It is gratifying to find that you are upholding class tradition by publishing this 1949 issue of the Blue and Gold. Best wishes for a busy and rewarding future. 7
