KAUFMAN HARRY L, BURKERT President Vice President Secretary CHARLES D. DEIBLER HIRAM L. FISHER, IR. E. WALTER HINKLE Treasurer We, as Seniors, pay tribute to the memory of Robert Sausser, President of the School Board, who died September 8, 1948. Mr. Sausser was highly esteemed as a business man and citizen, He gave generously of his time and talents in serving the interests of the youth of the community. Ioseph H. Manbeck was appointed by the Board to fill the unexpired term. 6 ROBERT SAUSSER ADMINISTRATION PAUL S. CHRISTMAN Supervising Principal Greetings To The Class CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes to you, members of the class of 1949, as you near the final day of your public school career. The hope is expressed that the community and state may have served you well in providing learning experiences through which you could become fitted for the early privileges of citizenship. There are, however, responsibilities which every good citizen assumes in a democracy and you are admonished to discharge them ably and well. We expect that you have come to appreciate and treasure the freedom en- joyed in America, the last bastion of individual liberty in the world. May we urge you to keep and improve the faith of your fathers and always remember that liberty is never completely won but must, at times, be sternly defended, It is gratifying to find that you are upholding class tradition by publishing this 1949 issue of the Blue and Gold. Best wishes for a busy and rewarding future. 7 ADMINISTRATION PAUL E. HARTRANFT High School Principal The year l949 is a challenging time for young people to graduate from high school. Peace has not yet come officially to the world. The differences between the two major ideas of government that are found in the world today have threatened a new conflict. The many outstanding advances in the field of science have put zest into our living but have also created many new situations. The atomic age is appearing which will greatly change our way of life in many ways. This is the time in which men's souls are tried, but it is also the time to show the fiber of which men are made. Your basic training is completed. You will now be on your own. That will be true if you continue your education or step into industry. In the case of most of you your capabilities will be revealed to you as you grow through experience and further training. Seniors, all of the fields of endeavor will create problems in your way of living but they will also bring opportunities of many varieties. The manner in which you use your opportunities will indicate the measure of success or failure for each of you. Success comes to those who are alert, trained and who exercise the initiative to grasp the situation when it arises, The motto of the class of 1949 is 'Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers . Your success will finally be measured by the amount of wisdom which lingers when knowledge comes. 8 iff., ,ff' 'v A X! ff . ' f'A I ' X, X y X X, ' H41 5 QQ N X ! We are the Forty Niners: The gold for which we search ls found in lives ahead- ln factory, home, and church. The gold rush now is on: With hope we'll wend our way- The ore must first be found, So let us search this day, CLASS SONG We have the things we need To aid us as we leave: The things we've learned in school We'll practice to achieve. We are the Forty Niners With many things to. find: But teachers' zeal and work We'll always keep in mind. And thus as years go by And folks do what they must, Our class, the Forty Niners. ln God will put our trust. -LARRY KLINGER FAREWELL HAVEN We're leaving Haven High: ' Qur memories will remain, We've had our fun and made our friends, But we must say farewell. School days we leave behind, V But hearts will always sing When we can hear that old refrain, Cur Alma Mater dear. We'll travel stormy seas: Loyal and true we'll stand. We've tried to keep our record clear: For honor is our guest. So, friends, our plan is given. We'll hold our heads up high Reaching for standards that are best. Remember that first day-September 4. 1946. We started the three most important vears of our lives on that day. Whatever course we decided to take, our senior high education would be the most influential and beneficial that we would ever know. The main high-light of our USilly Sophomore year was the Crystal Ball gance. held in the gaily decorated gymnasium, and a wonderful time was had y al . Mr. lmboden was our class adviser. Mr. Husousky and Mr. Kershner aided us also in obeying this order. We returned in September 1947, and much to our dismay the school hadn't changed. We were now Ulolly Iuniorsf' The iunior dance, held after the home basketball games, was the first social event to be sponsored by the class. The junior play, 'AThe Adorable Imp, directed by Mr. Brown. was outstanding and also a financial success. September 1948. Then finally it was here. That year of years-when we became Sophisticated Seniors. What a terrific year that wasl The football team, well represented by our senior boys, and led by Russell Heffner, proved to be one of the most outstanding teams in the past few years. Winter brought on more sensational athletics, with the basketball team losing only three games the whole season. Karl Kauterman, captain of this fine team, deserves mention for his excellent leadership. Other activities in which our class participated were Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, G.A.A., Band, Student Council, Baseball, Chorus, Majorettes, and Cheer- leaders. We are proud to say that Charles Bernheisel was our president for the past three years. The other officers for our senior year were vice-president, Iames Moyer: secretary, Sylvia Ketner: treasurer, Isabelle Naffin. Miss Baus- um, class advisor, and Mr, Brown guided us through this last year. The senior play, We Shook the Family Tree, proved to be an enjoyable evening of entertainment. Qur other activities were a senior dance, senior hoe-down, and a trip to Washington. Then came the month of Iune, the one month we will always remember as one of the greatest in our lives. Commencement and all other graduation ex- ercises took place in the auditorium. . Thus ended three years of hard work and good times, and we wish the best of luck to our successors in all they undertake. A hot, nutri- tionally balanced meal is prepared and served by two women cooks assisted by pupils under the supervision of the Home Economics Teacher. Under the National School Lunch Program surplus foods are made avail- able to schools and a cash reemburse- ment of .09 per meal for each pupil's lunch. making it possible to serve a complete lunch at a cost of .l5c per meal. The lunch is served in the Home Economics Room of the High School. Any pupil may eat there who fills out an application card and has it approv- ed bv Home Room teacher and Miss Lutz. supervisor. Because of limited serving and seating space, the pro- gram is limited to 140 applications. A typical lunch consists of soup or main dish, sandwich or bread and butter, dessert and pint of milk.
