Many commercial graduates owe him a vote of thanks for the position they now hold. He is known to a multitude through his work as chairman of the local ration board, as well as other activities. When there is any time for leisure, Mr. Shank with his family enjoys a visit to some historical shrine, and finds recreation in camping along a lake or stream. Since, this year marks his tenth anniversary as ad- viser to the Blue and Gold Staffsg we find it most fitting that special recognition be given him at this time. - With deep sincerity vve dedicate this book to you, Mr. Shank. Q sf 1- rf, , F bi'T.Jg,-' - V , 'f . 1 fin: Dedication w Walt FUBE ORD The people of our nation' believe in education as the foundation of democracy. In view of this fact we have chosen Education for the Peace as our theme. Americans realize that education is the key to pro- gress. It is our purpose to show how the school life of a student today is developing the better world citizen of tomorrow. We, as cofworkers in the field of edu, cation, are 'preparing both physically and mentally to meet the demands of the future. In spite of the hectic conditions of our times we peer hopefully into the future in search of a new and better day when peace shall reign supremely in our world. It is our firm belief that the plans must be formulated and executed by an educated World citi- zenry. 1 Unntent x rninistratien Seniors Classes nesivisies S t per s Features Arlnertisenrents dmini tration . . . EYSTER The School Board consists of a group of individuals who are interested in the public wefare of the community in the broadest sense of the word, They are prompted to supply the public needs by the fact that they are render- ing service to the young people of the community. They have a wholesome, comprehensive, liberal view of the task of public schools. The result of their concep- tion is revealed in the every-day work of our schools. The Class of '45 shall ever appreciate the interest shown bythe Board of Directors in their desire to pro- mote educational progress in Schuylkill Haven. ROBERT SALISSER Vice-president IOS. S. KAUFMAN Serving in place of Mr. Hoke 'upervisin Principal PAUL S. CHRISTMAN Supervising Principal E, the class of 1945, deeply appreciate the interest and understanding shown to us by our Supervising Principal, Mr, Paul S. Christman. The thought in everyones mind today is post-war planning. We as a whole do not know what lies ahead for us, so therefore, the idea for post-war planning is foremost in our minds. We have had little or no experience with post-war activities, but the future classes under the guidance of our Supervising Principal will have found that it is a subject which lies closest to the hearts of everyone. He has guided us successfully through our high school years by advice and willingness to aid. His pleasing person- ality is admired by everyone who comes in contact with him. A great asset and an advantage are his teachings in P.O.D. classes. They help us to understand our government and war time conditions, and aid us in planning for the postwar world. Therefore, we take this opportunity to thank him for his kind words and deeds. He will be a pleasant memory to everyone of us, both now and in future years. Seventeen Facult . . . msg Q, XC. ' Thirty-seven SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '45, began our journey through high school on September 8, 1942, with a representation of 121 pupils. Work immediately began under the capable leader- ship of Aaron E. Young, our class adviser, assisted by Miss Nellie Reinhart and Mr. Lawrence Imboden. The class started the year by electing the following officers: Elwood Scott, president: james Stripe, vice president: Russell Shaeffer, secretary: and Rueben Wolfe, treasurer. The year's outstanding social event was the girls' hay ride. Singing and merry-making filled the whole evening. Soon September 1943 came along with the class of '45 entering its juniornyear. The class was represented with 84 students, a decrease of 25 pupils, The class once again started by electing the following officers: james Stripe, president: David Moyer, vice presi- dent: Anna Mae Moyer, secretary: Bruce Wenrich, treasurer. The outstanding social event of the year was, of course, the junior Prom. Pastel streamers, gliders, evening dresses, dimmed lights and the soft music of Horace Richards and his well-known orchestra, furnished the background for this occasion. The junior play, '1Victory Home, was ably portrayed by a cast of talented students who made the play a huge success. Sports and other activities found many juniors participat- ing Andrew Monsulick was elected captain of the football team. September 7, 1944, found us seniors at last! The armed forces and war work have left only 84 in our class. This number being one of the smallest in years. Class officers for this year were David Moyer, president: Bruce Wenrich, vice president: Rueben Wolfe, secretary: Elwood Scott, treasurer: and with Miss C. Harriet Hoy, our class adviser. Thirty-eight SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Our class play Yankee Doodle American, was rated by many as the best play given in years. It was a huge success all around. Due credit must be given to our fine coaches, Miss Hoy and Mr. Brown, and members of the cast for their fine performance. The field of sports once again found many seniors parti- cipating. David Moyer, Wesley Bazar, Andrew Nlonsulick, Bruce Wenrich. Donald Becker, Richard Mould, Ray Fleagle and Percy Heisler represented football, while Iames Stripe, Kenneth Fehr, Bruce Wenrich and David Moyer represented basketball. The senior class of '45 is noted for its outstanding quali- ties. Some of them are: Marian Steigerwalt sold 121 tickets to the junior play: more cars are owned by individual students than any other senior class at Haven high: a decrease of 44 pupils since our sophomore year. These things are only a few, but, before this great war comes to an end, you will hear many things of the gallant class of 45 . The class officers chosen were president, Gerald Berger: vice-president, Karl Bernet: secretary, Ioyce Shuey: treasurer, Ioyce Bo- len. Our class rings, which we anxiously await- ed, were received near the end of October. Everyone seemed very well pleased. We had 108 members. Our first class dues were collected October 25, 1944. Class officers elected in our sophomore year were president, Richard Mengle: vice- president, Sheldon Wildermuth: secretary. CLASS RECORDS Those who participated in basketball were Lawrence Borden, Iames Shaw, Edgar Dei- bert, Ierome Sobolesky, Iohn Keller, Iames Edling, Dyar Haddad, Luther Bitzer, Iohn Naffin. Other activities of the class were I-li-Y, band, orchestra, Girls' Athleticig Association, Haven Fax, girls' and mixed Choruses, and student council. The first social event was a Christmas party conducted on December 20, 1944. The gymnasium was gaily decorated, and record- ings were furnished for dancing. Several games were played, and gifts were exchang- ed. The junior play, Almost Eighteen, was a great success. The characters were ably portrayed by various members of the class. The biggest event of our junior year was the Iunior Prom. Soft music, evening gowns, and dim lights furnished a delightful evening. -Donls MELLOR, historian The activities in our sophomore year were the chemistry club, in which many students took part: the football team included the fol- lowing boys: Iohn Doll, Steve Cuchara, Richard Mengle, and Kenneth Mengle: the basketball players were George Schuckers, Ioseph Webber, Earl Anderson, and Wilbur Shaup. Many sophomores participated in the Christmas Cantata which included singing by the Girls' Chorus and the Mixed Chorus.
