HARTRANFT, principal of the high school, we dedicate the 1944 school annual. During the three years that we have spent in the Schuylkill Haven High School, we have always found Mr. Hartranft ready and willing to lend us a helping hand whenever it was necessary. His willingness to help others and his pleasing personality will always be remembered by us. The things he has taught us in P.0.D. classes will linger in our memories for many years after we shall have been graduated. Therefore, we, the class of 19-H, dedicate our yearbook to him and sincerely hope that the classes in the future will benefit by his guidance as much as we have. FIVE Foreword 77W FOUR F REEDO MYSSAGE T0 TH! 11 CONGKIZSS f ' 0 JANUARY 5, lggl IN the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look orward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. Tflfflliff is freedom of speech and expression-every where in the world. The 5660II1I' is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way-everywhere in the world. Thi' ffllflf is freedom from want-which translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants-everywhere in the world. TAL'-fdlll7h is freedom from fear-which translated into world terms, means il world-wide reduction of arma- ments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor-anywhere. E-AML Mui' y I I I t' N IDUCATIDN will-Nu. I g I I l or :nunrroir if f mcrnron , . . mnr -ss r I num unc E HAVE CHOSEN The Freedoms as our theme because we believe this theme is indeed appropriate at this time. Never before in history has democratic education been so challenged with the problem of remaining free and at the same time of being effective in controlling the evils which are terrifying the world. Although there are serious days ahead for all of us, nevertheless we feel that we have been prepared to make genuine sacrifices and to readjust our individual lives through the reconstruction period which lies ahead. BOARD UF DIHEGTURS MRS. GEORGE W. BUTZ ROBERT SAUSSER HARRY L. BURKERT CHARLES D. DEIBLER President Vice-President Secretary Acting Treasurer The class of 1944 takes this opportunity to offer recognition to the members of the School Board for their untiring efforts. They have striven to make our school days memorable ones in spite of the condition of our country. We express our sincere appreciation to each member of the Board of Directors. HUGH H. HOKE HIRAM L. FISHER, IR We, as seniors, pay special tribute to the memory of Mr. Samuel l. Bast who was a member of the School Board for the last forty-five years. During this time, Mr. Bast served as ' treasurer of the board for twenty-five years. His life and community interests should serve as a model for our future citizenship. The lovable character of our late director, his keen interest in our educational welfare, and his high regard for the community are worthy of emulation. I I SAMUEL I. BAST TEN X upervisin Principal PAuL S, CHRISTMAN Supervising Principal HILE WE TAKE great pride in our school as a means of free education, yet the fact remains that much must be done to protect our free institutions and to insure the future of the freedoms of our country. We are proud to know that we, the senior class, have had as our Supervis- ing Principal, one who believes that the future of a nation depends primarily upon its educational system. He believes not only in a great unity of purpose in the education of today's youth for a post-war world, but he also works hard toward its fulfillment. Therefore, we sincerely appreciate the leadership of our Supervising Principal, Mr. Paul S. Christman, who has tried to inculcate in us a love and understanding of American Democracy. It is through the unceasing ef- forts of our teachers that our high school car- eer can be a success. Through their untiring efforts, their helpfulness, their cooperation, and their endeavors, our future will be more suc- cessful not only in the armed forces but also in civilian life. Many accelerated courses have also been offered which afforded instruction and training for various branches of the service. More education and its importance is stress- ed in order that we can play a bigger and better part in the drama of life. In view of these facts. we, the class of 1944, salute the teachers who have done their utmost for us. Having been called into the service has caused several changes in the faculty of our school. Miss Helen Brown, girls' physical edu- cation teacher, is serving in the WACS: Mr. Aaron Young, commercial instructor, is now in the Marines: and Mr. Ivan Fisher, industrial arts instructor, is in the Seabees. . . A,,,H, ilk enior Class Hi tory We, the class of 1944, began our journey through high school on September 29, 1941, with 118 members, Under the capable lead- ership of Mr. Edward Brown, our class ad- viser, assisted by Miss Nellie Reinhart and Mr. Lawrence Imboden, we soon became familiar with our new surroundings. Class officers elected in the sophomore year were president, Leo Krammes: vice- president, Endelva Reed: secretary, Lorraine Taylor: treasurer, Albert Wagner. The main social event of the year was a skating party at Willow Lake during April. September 8, 1942, found 106 students en- tering school as jolly juniors. Miss Verna Seltzer, our class adviser, Mr. Albert Berg- er, and Mr. Walter Shank guided us through this year. Class officers elected for the junior year were president, Leo Krammes: vice-president, Paul Noll: secretary, Ruth Lowe: treasurer, Robert Davis. Our first social event of this year was a Holloween party in the gymnasium, Games. refreshments, and contests were included in the entertainment for the evening. Class rings were received shortly before the Thanksgiving holidays, and they met with everyone's approval. The junior play, A'Youth on the Home Front, was splendidly portrayed, Financial- ly and entertainingly, this play proved to be a success. Early in May, Robert Davis became the editor of the Haven Fax. He has the distinc- tion of being the only boy to achieve this position in the eighteen years of the publi- cation of the Fax. 1 At last, our most anticipated event of the year, the junior prom arrived, Music by Hor- ace Richards and his well-known orchestra, evening gowns, and beautiful decorations provided a setting which we shall never for- get. Sports and other activities found many juniors participating, Nelson Schaeffer and Leo Krammes were elected co-captains of the football team. September 7, 1943, seniors at last! The armed forces and war work have left only 93 in our class. Mr. Edward Brown, our class adviser, Miss Ethel Bausum and Mr. Walter Shank aided us during this year. Class officers this year were president, Leo Krammesg vice-president, Gordon Reed: secretary, Doris Keller: treasurer, Albert Wagner. Our senior Halloween party was a gala affair, Hilarious costumes and well-planned entertainment made this party an enjoyable success. Reserve Two for Murder was the title of our senior play. This play with its mys- tery plot and unusual setting was a challenge to senior talent. Due credit must be given to the coach, Mr. Brown, and the members of the cast for the fine performance. Capacity audiences both nights assured its success. Sports again found many seniors partici- pating. Leo Krammes, Nelson Schaeffer, Ken- neth Berger, Paul Seidel, Paul Noll, Robert Yazujian, Gordon Reed, Vincent Miller, and john Becker represented us in football while Leo Krammes occupied a Valuable position on the basketball squad. Band, orchestra, and chorus claimed sen- iors with musical talent. The Haven Fax and Blue and Gold Staff as well as other activities attracted others. There are many former members of our class serving Uncle Sam. He has profited by our loss, ROBERT HALDEMAN THIRTY-SEVEN CLASS PUEM If folks say That boy will succeed He has just what it takes. Four students also entered the sport of basketball: Iames Stripe, Kenneth Fehr, Bruce Wenrich, and William Eckert. Girls of the class were also very active as they organized a powerful basketball team to combat any class. The junior play, 'AVictory Home , was ably portrayed by a cast of talented students who made the play a huge success. The outstanding social event of the year was, of course, the Iunior Prom. Pastel streamers, gliders, evening dresses, dimmed lights, and soft music furnished the back- ground for this occasion. EIGHT A Message from the Editor The theme of this twenty-second volume of the Blue and Gold is based on American Free- doms. As we look back into history, we see that our forefathers have established our free- doms for us: today we find our soldiers lighting to preserve them. Among the freedoms which we enjoy are freedoms of speech, preparedness, opportunity, heritage. As young Americans we have taken these freedoms for granted because they have always been our privileges. By the various pictures in this volume, we have tried to show examples of what education is doing to make America strong. Our school organizations help to build knowledge and char- acter: moreover, our whole education has helped to give our life a greater meaning and more power to make us strong. As we go forth into this world of confusion, we can expect to meet challenge at every turn. But, with the faith and courage of our fore- fathers, we shall endeavor to meet these chal- lenges and make truth, righteousness, and jus- tice prevail. From this point, the plot gathers astonish- ing speed and takes in its stride any number of weird and chilling developments with these characters: Mrs. George Thurston-Allen llune Loyj, Mrs. Inglefritz lEIizabeth Bairj, Eloise Uane Burkertj, William Rus- sell llay Bubeckl, Dr. Martin Edwards QAI- bert Wagnerl, Miss Martha Gregary lRuth Louise Lowej, Patrolman Schultz lLeo Krammesl, Ivan Strange tWilliam Bittlel, and Sally Lynch lHelen Bachmanl. The mystery is finally unravelled by two detectives who have come to see the perform- ance, Sergeant Kennedy lKenneth Bergerl and Sam Lee tVincent Millerj, his proverb- spranting Chinese assistant. The players' ability can be seen in that Haven had four repre- sentatives in the annual dream game classic. Seniors on the team were as follows: linemen, Kenneth Berger, Bruce Grover, Nelson Schaeffer, Paul Noll, Vincent Miller, Allen Dilliplane, Robert Yazujian, Harry Reed, and Robert Knoll: backfield men: Gordon Reed, Paul Seidel, and Iohn Becker. Leo Krammes, forced to the sidelines by injuries, was of great assistance to Mr. Stauffer and Mr. Hummel in training future material. Arthur Beetem, who served the Haven Fax as sports editor for almost two years, wrote not only stories for the football and basketball games for the Fax but also for the Pottsville Iournal and the Call. The Rotary Field EIGHTY-FIVE FUUTBALL . HAVEN, 37 vs. POTTS. CATH. 0 Haven crushed its first opponent with a mighty surge of scoring power on September 25, at Haven's field. The Green and Gold found the Reed boys and Seidel too much for its defense. Pottsville made two threats but was itoi i ed by interceptions by Becker and HAVEN, 6 vs. SAINT CLAIR, 20 The only blot on the season's record was played on the Saint's muddy field, October 2. Donnie Reed tallied Haven's lone score on a a pass, but it was over- shadowed by an immediate score for the Saints on a brilliant kick-off run- back. HAVEN, 19 vs. GILBERTON, O Gilberton, the scoreless wonder, was allowed to return home with its notable name intact, October 9, Butch and Don- nie Reed accounted for Haven's tallies Gilberton's offensive was rendered pow- erless by a hard fighting Haven team, still smarting from its previous defeat. HAVEN, 13 vs. E. MAHANOY. 0 Haven came through with its third win by holding a heavy Mahanoy team powerless in a pouring rain, October 16, on the Rotary Field. Although out- weighed, the Blue and Gold line rose to its most brilliant showing by holding the Purple Larks to a mere total of 80 yards gained. Again the Reed boys accounted for the scoring. EIGHTY-SIX . STATISTICS HAVEN, 26 vs. CASS, 0 The mighty Blue and Gold again showed its power and kept its winning streak intact by completely outclassing Cass in the first of the two games play- ed with the opponent, October 23, at Cass. Gordon Reed tallied three touch- downs: and Butch Reed, the fourth. Cass resorted to passing but suffered numerous interceptions. HAVEN, 27 vs. CASS, 0 Haven duplicated its previous defeat of Cass by again holding the team scoreless, November 6, on the home field. Seidel scored on a pass, and Butch and Donnie Reed ran the other three six-pointers across the last stripe. lnterceptions plagued Cass? Stopped its offensive time after time. HAVEN, 45 vs. POTTS. CATH., O From the opening play in which Seid- el ran 80 yards for a touchdown, to the final gun, the Blue and Gold surged over Pottsville in a wild burst of scor- ing, November I3, at Pottsville. Butch Reed set the pace by scoring 27 of Haven's points, Bert McCord displayed exceptionally good pass-receiving ab- ility by catching five in a row in the closing minutes of the game.
