All thru the years of its existence liberty-loving people have had to struggle -fbut always before them were the symbols which meant life, 'M liberty, and happiness. I ggi It is the purpose of this book to clarify the symbols of our American freedom. To everyone who lives under the stars and stripes, the torch, the Goddess of Libetry, the bell which proclaimed the birth of this nation, and the ever vigilant eagle, each holds much significance to loyal America. As they before us fought for these freedoms, our class, too, is destined to fight to preserve and uphold these symbols . . . we are proud and justly so . . . for thru this, we too, become a symbol of America and her way of life. 6 Co ir ntent ak ir 'A' ir Youth on the Home Front Aclministfratioh Seniors Classes Actifvities Athletics Advertising Hi' ir ir 10 Jig .3- .-. , 'B N, ,f .F F I L g -., if 'gf' I ii! 1 -X ,, ' f 1? CHRISTMAN When one strives to up-hold the three cardinal objectives of our demo- cratic principles, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, he soon becomes a symbol of true Americanism. Today more than ever these principles must be emphasized, so that America may always be known as The Keeper of the Flame, truth. During this period of hatred and strife, it is sometimes hard to continue unfalteringly on the pathway of democracy. Yours has been this great task, which has been met on all occasions unflinchingly. You have always tried to hold the true democratic spirit before us. You have left many thoughts, which should linger forever, in the minds of every member of this class. We appreciate the interest you have shown in education and civic activi- ties as well. For your faithful and tireless efforts, we sincerely thank you. 17 Ima Tater For you Haven High, We'll work and we'll try, To bring you name Glory and more fame, May all that you know, Be pride and joy alone, Our Alma Mater behold The Blue and Gold. Schuylkill Haven High, We will fight for you, Staunch we'll remain To you, the Gold and Blue, As true as the Blue, As worthy as Gold, We'll do our best for you Our Haven High. Our clear Haven High, For thee we'll do or die, Our thonghts will cling with thee Unto eternity. The friends gained through your love They'll be as stars above, This Alma Mater true We dedicate to you. -Music by Lee Berger, 18 4 Principal r 3 ,, rg p f U T l A if -2410 PAUL E. HARTRANFT We are greatly indebted to our principal, Mr. Hartranft, who has so graciously guided us through our high school years. He is always will- ing to do his bit to help others and has never refus- ed to give advice to anyone. His pleasing person- ality is a great asset to him. The many things which he taught us in P.O.D. classes are certain to be an advantage in later life. His kind Words and deeds will be a memory to every one of us in future years, 19 acult The war effort has thrust many new duties upon the teachers of our schools. ln addition to their many responsibilities the teachers have been enlisted by our government to utilize much of their time in regis- tering selective service men and in rationing various commodities In the 0f fy future, the teachers may also be ex- ji' JJ pected to answer questions in written if form on the psychology of the stud- fdb -W' 1 ents eligible for the draft. XL!!-ffl! uthermore, the teachers are mf ' t ing to make the students realize - -' that their education will mean so 5 ' much toward the war effort after graduation. Emphasis is being placed on students' getting as many credits as possible in order that they can receive diplomas. This may seem to be a minor factor to some people, but it is of great importance to Uncle Sam and to the individual. jf , ...Vw w . J' ttf' ff! iff' wp 'JJ fig? I ll 9 U tmlgt ff! ETHEL M. We owe a lot to our teachers, Who guided our ship so well, Who make the story of our high school days, A more pleasant one to tell. n And now as we board the ship The World , And sail the sea of strife, We know our ship will be battered and torn, Conquering the waves of life. The general command given to 135 silly sophsl' was, Advancel This command was efficiently carried out by your class officers: president, Sara Achenbach: vice-president, Lyle Wagner: secretary, Helen Clark: treasurer, Betty Rhein. Miss Reinhart was our class adviser. Mr. Brown, Mr. Kerschner, and Mr. lmboden aided us also in obeying this order. By September 29, 1941, our company of 115 had advanced to the rank of jolly juniors. We were commanded this year by the following officers: president, Lyle Wagner: vice-presi- dent, Elaine Webberg secretary, Betty Nye: treasurer, Betty Rhein. We were ably guided in our junior year by Mr. Albert Berger, our class adviser, Miss Verna Seltzer, and Mr. Shank. The junior Hallowe'en party was the first social event to be enjoyed by the class. The gymnasium was gaily decorated and delicious refreshments were served. The junior play, Here Comes Patricia, di- rected by Mr. Berger and Miss Seltzer, was outstanding and also a financial success. May Day found Esther Dominski presiding as May Queen. She was crowned by Pearl jean Moyer, Queen of 1941. Melba Dinkel was crown-bearer. Finally, the most important event of the year -the junior Prom. Pastel streamers, gliders, evening dresses, dimmed lights and soft music by Horace Richards furnished the background required for this occasion. Our class was well represented in sports. Earl Sterner and Michael Shadel were elected future co-captains of the football squad. Other activities in which our class participa- ted were basketball, HI-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, Haven Fax, student council, girls' and mixed choruses, and G.A.A. On September 8, 1942, how proud our com- pany of 96 felt to be promoted to the rank of dignified seniors! Our commanding officers were president, David Schwenkg vice-president, Lyle Wagner: secretary, Betty Nye: treasurer, Betty Rhein. The senior play, Spring Fever, was not on- ly a financial success but also an outstanding affair. At last. the final step in our high school career-graduation. Miss Ethel Bausum, our class adviser, Miss Harriet Hoy, and Mr. Ed- ward Brown guided us through this last year. Having succeeded in obeying our command of, Advance, we are now prepared to receive future orders and to carry them out to the best of our ability. jean Kremer 14 'W LJ ' 5' , J Q - . 1'f-,mfffff 0321! Standing: Howard Seitzinger, Miss Seltzer, Mr. Berger, Betty Kimmel, Williani Crcary, Mildred McCord, Frank Shollenberger. Under the direction of Mr. Albert Berger and Miss Verna Seltzer, we as juniors, presented a three act comedy entitled, Here Comes Patricia, by Eugene Hater, February 12 and 13, 1942. The play proved to be a success. both financially and apipreciatively. In the comedy overall clad Patricia Grayson, alias Patricia Hammond lMargaret Gearyl, whom no one suspected as the governor's daughter in disguise, was in charge of the local filling station, A committee, sponsored by two aristocratic town-citizens, Mrs. Smith Porter llanet Palsgrovel and Adam Wade lFranklin Shollenbergerl engaged Iimmy Clard lLyle Wagnerl, to drive Patricia from Fern Lawn, instead he involuntarily, fell-in love with her. Much of the action occured in Mrs. Carrol's fCatherine Garrett'sJ boarding house which was always in an uproar, especially, when the town loafer, Tim Hopper fl'loward Seitzingerl, made his appearance. Here one was also intro- duced to Elbert Hastings lCarl Neyl, who readily succumbed to the charm of Elsie Crowder fAlice lean Bazarl, and Bud Flannigan lWilliam Crearyl, who in turn found it difficult to decide which Knoll cousin, Angelina lBetty Kimmell or Minnie lMildred McCordl, upheld most perfectly the girl of his dreams. The greatest excitement occured, however on the evening of the arrival of the governor and his daughter. To everyones surprise, the governor's daughter proved to be no other than Patricia Hammond. This change in identity yielded Patricia many interesting experiences. 66 es Putnam Spfin Senior Play A, X g Feyernp Seated: Howard Seitzinger, Elaine Webber, Betty Nye, lack Eiler, Bertha Deibert, Ianet Palsgrove, Fem Wenrich. Standing: Lyle Wagner, Miss Bausum, William Creary, Grant Deibler, Catherine Garrett, Miss Hoy, Russell Yost. Spring Fever , a three act farce by Glenn Hughes, was presented November 24 and 25, 1942, under the supervision of Miss Ethel Bausum and Miss C. Harriet Hoy. The wit, the merriment, and the effectiveness which characterized the play, were beyond all expectations. ' ln the farce, the boarding house of Mrs. Spangler lCatherine Garrettj was the scene of much excitement the day before Commencement when three senior boys, Howard Brant ll'loward Seitzingerj, Ed Burns lWilliam Crearyl, and Vic Lewis llack Eilerl, made last minute preparations. Complications soon arose. Anne Purcell fElaine Web'berl had neglected to make reservations for her millionaire father and mother fGrant Deibler and Ianet Palsgrovel, in addition, Howards Aunt Maude fFern Wenrichl, a spinister female from California, arrived unexpectedly. Misfortune soon developed after Mr, Purcell, who was about to present a new science building to the college, had arrived. He was intimidated in an ex- plosion and, consequently, withdrew his offer. Much concern was shown by everyone: but, especially by Professor Virgil Bean fRussel Yostl and Dr. Dixon lLyle Wagnerl, president of the college, when they learned of Brook- lEeld's great loss. lt was at this time that Anne Purcell, aided by two chums, Lou Herron fBertha Deibertl and Vivian George lBetty Nyel, decided to enact a death bed scene. Their efforts were rewarded, for Mr. Purcell renewed his offer: and the play ended to everyone's satisfaction. 67 M Yi , U I , ' ,J Q ,, W' A ,A ig! 3,1 fu I J 'Ill J . lf- I , ' f f , if ly I ,N yi I J Film 'lx fjlj n I I in I Puoaw sr .
