SCHUYLERVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL Schuylerville, New York presents THE 1987 SCHUYLER FACULTY 5 ELEMENTARY 13 JUNIOR HIGH 27 SENIORS 49 SPORTS 69 UNDERCLASS 93 ORGANIZATIONS 101 Dear Seniors, On behalf of the Staff and the Board of Education, it is a tremendous pleasure for me to be able to extend to all of you our most sincere congratulations on your upcoming graduation. The class of 1987 is the first of many that has accepted the challenges of new leadership and responded in such a positive manner. Your pride in yourselves and in your school will set an example for your underclassmen here at Schuylerville. Each of you will be able to look back upon your school and know that you played a key role in establishing new traditions and direction. As your new Superintendent, I can say that I am proud to be part of your fine school district and community. Many members of your class have gone out of their way to make the Brenner family part of our school community. I can never thank you enough for that warm greeting, but 1 can carry on the strong school spirit of the Class of 1987. Again, I say congratulations to each of you and wish you the very best in future years. Please remember your community and school because they will always remember the Class of 1987. Good luck to each of you and continue to make all of us proud of you. Sincerely, (pjzpi? Peter M. Brenner, Sr. Superintendent of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION Jack Uacica. President; Josephine DeCregory. Vice President; Charles Cadwallader; Robert Farrell: Stephanie Maguire: Sylvia Proller; Neil Roberts: Thelma Hack. Clerk Mr. Richard Behrens, High School Principal Mr. Donald Phair, Elementary and Intermediate Principal 3 SCHOOL DAYS Being located in a farm community, we hold a special place in our hearts for the lifeblood of our area. This lifeblood is, of course, cows. From Angus to Holstein, from beef to dairy, cows could be the most im- portant part of our landscape. In honor of the bovine species, the 1987 yearbook includes several references to these animals, so don’t be surprised, be on the lookout for cows, and BE PROUD!! Faculty and Staff 9 8 MR. ALVISET Mr. Alviset will retire this year. He has taught at Schuylerville Central School for the past thirty years and he has been a teacher for thirty-three years. Mr. Alviset has been an active member of our school community, he was our Junior High Basketball coach for 15 years, a life member of the PTA, the basketball scorckccpcr, and the advisor to the Junior-High Student Council. Mr. Alviset’s future plans include moving to Delaware to “live by the sea.” Mr. Alviset, we all wish you the best and want you to know that you have touched our lives and we are richer for it. HUNTRESS T t isn’t often that you meet someone who has the A ability to change your life. That is just one of the special qualities Father Franklin E. Huntress possesses. The class of 1987 and the 1987 yearbook staff would like to express our deepest gratitude and wish the best of luck to this wonderful man for: • always being there when we needed a listening ear • giving us advice when we needed it most • running the clock and making announcements at basketball games (they aren’t the same without him) • breaking up the monotony of our classes with his surprise visits • giving us something to laugh about (even when it seemed things couldn't possibly be worse) • keeping the faculty and teachers in line at SCS • serving as a constant reminder that to strive for the best is to be the best • and last but not least: for always providing the yearbook with an original poem dedicated to the graduating class!!! Here’s to the Class of '87, Whose names are etched this side of heaven; Within this gang, you 're all unique; Homework and chores done every week. You sat the bench with Sammy Fitz, Buck Mountain, too, an easy trip! Memories galore; this road of life Has been a joy and really nice. But out those doors you have to go; The world awaits to see you show What SCS has done for you With solid education true. That Schuyler School has done its job.. . Taught you so well in all the R ’s”. Pass on to all what you have learned; Your niche in life you well have earned. A van misused, and caught by dad; Lessons of life are hard and sad. It's thumpy-bumpy on that road.. . Temptations ill around to goad!! Be strong in heart and courage, too; To follow after all that's true. There is no mercy in life’s game; Be off the bench and earn your fame. Which reminds me of those Boston teams, First place for them is not in dreams! Hard work and wins they showed to us You do the same to earn life’s trust. We ’ll cheer you all. Class 87, With best of luck from here to heaven. I think you ’re swell and can't be beat; One day, somewhere, we’re sure to meet!! The old pole vault record of 11 feet lO' i inches set by Henry Buesing in 1967 was broken several times by junior Keith Bushy. Keith vaulted 13 feet at the prestigious Eddy Meet, the largest outdoor meet in New York State, to finish third and set a new school record. Keith also went on to finish first at the Sectionals. He presently has the fourth best vault in section II. At the Sectionals, junior Roger Sherman, and freshman, Joe Bazamick, also had great performances. Roger finished third in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet and third in the triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, just a short off the school record. Joe finished third in the 3200 meter run with an excellent time. Also finishing for the Horses, in the Sectionals and receiving Sectional ribbons were junior, Bryan Booth — 5th in the 200 meter run; senior, Mike Hayes — 6th in the 800 meter run; senior Joe Lanfear — 4th in the 400 meter hurdles; sophomore, Mike Kenney — 4th in the mile run. Also, the 400 meter relay team of Talbot, Jackson, Angelique Fenton, and Wendy Griffen and the 1600 meter relay of Griffen, Talbot, Sue Gebo, and Heather Kenney showed great improvement throughout the season. Kenney also performed well in the 800; likewise, Rixt Bicrma and Erika Schmidt made strong late-season performances in the 1500. In the field events, Lisa Hall, Emily Conover, Becky Foster and Sherrie Coleman were consistent and show promise for next year. Kim Cahan finished second in the league meet in the high jump. Mike Thomas, Robbie McIntyre, Chet Urban, Eric Rose, Richard Jones, Evelyn Magrow, Lisa Glucck, Don Burlingham, Joanne Litterer The Varsity Tennis Team began this season with only Kim Carr and Robbi McIntyre returning from last year’s team. With high hopes and enthusiasm, we began our season. Most of the team were novices or beginners; we have played well, pressing our opponents and winning victories over Whitehall and Johnsburg. And most of all, young men and women are learning the discipline, manners, and fun of working together and playing tennis, a lifetime sport. The JR High ( 7r s'Track team was undefeated in the dual meet season and beat 8 other schools to win the Schuylerwich Invy. The team featured many outstanding performers and a solid group of hard working athletes. The team received important contributions from many hard-working, dedicated athletes. The Varsity Football Team concluded this year with 5 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie and a first time ever trip to the NortheriV Adirondack League ’’Superbowl.” The football team honored itself by capturing the Division I Title after defeating Mechanicville by a score of 19 to 18 on Homecoming Weekend. We traveled to rival Greenwich and suffered a difficult loss. For having won the Division I Title, Schuylerville earned the right to meet Division II leader. Lake George, in a game played at Saratoga’s East Side Recreation Field. Thegame was hard fought by both teams and ended in a tie at the conclusion of regulation time. The League’s tie breaking rule was put into effect and Lake George went away winning by a score of 12 to 6. With the loss to Lake George, the Schuylerville ’’Mudders’’ ended their 1986 season Schuylerville can be very proud of its football team and their accomplishments. A number of boys from this year’s team were honored by being selected to the League All Star Team: Tom Ellis, Bill Peck, Chuck Winney, Mark Mahay, and Andy Signor. Other boys receiving honorable mention were John Barber, Kevin Peck, and Orin Comissiong. The Cross Country Team finished its season by competing in the league meet and Class ‘C”‘ Sectionals. While other teams moo- o-oved over, our varsity team stampeded to victory. Schuylerville has a long tradition of championship seasons and winning seasons. REMEMBER WHEN WE? • • • 83 BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL The opening of the 1986-87 season saw the return of seven experienced senior players: Bill Peck, Kevin Peck, John Barber, Chuck Winney, Tim Hayes, Andy Signor, and Tom Ellis. Hopes were high for league championship. The Black Horses' season opened with a win of the Mechanicville Tip-Off Tournament by defeating Waterford and league rival Stillwater. Early in the season two difficult losses to Stillwater and Hoosic Fallj put the Horses out of the league’s top spot. However, our Black Horses managed to rally and defeat Greenwich and Tamarac before the Christmas Holidays. After a successful Christmas Tournament against Corinth, Luzerne, and Perth the Horses suffered a third loss to Salem. With only a slim hope of a league championship remaining, the true character of the Schuylerville Black Horses began to emerge. They traveled to Stillwater to redeem their honor and respect. The Horses did not disappoint themselves or their fans and played their strongest game of the season. Defeating Stillwater proved they were the team everyone thought they were. To continue to prove that our Horses were the best team in the Wasaren League, they won nine straight league games and avenged their earlier losses to both Hoosic Falls and Salem. As the regular season closed, the Black Horses ended with a record of 17 wins and 3 losses; the best record Schuylerville has had since 1978. Varsity: standing, B. Schutz, Coach Schutz, K. Peck, C. The three most experienced players from last year’s team were Shawn Quinn, Tim Brunson, and Terry VanAmum. Overall the team ended the season with a record of 7 wins and 13 losses. With a little luck the J.V. team could have ended with a .500 record as they lost 3 games by only a 6 pt. total. As most of the J.V. players will be moving to the varsity team, next year’s J.V. will probably be predominantly freshmen. Todd Doherty and Greg Porlier were the only freshmen on this year’s J.V. team. All the players will have gained some valuable experience in spite of their record and should be able to build on that with hopes of improved success over their remaining high school careers. Signor The faculty and students at Schuylerville Central would like to congratulate recent graduate Kenneth Macica on receiving the State Star Farmer Award. This is the highest award that any FFA student can achieve in New York State. Ken was selected from the top 3% of FFA students in the state. After the untimely death of his father, Ken chose to take over his family farm and easily met the requirements in the State Star Farmers Application by having worked well over 2,400 man hours in one year and having approximately 45,000 dollars invested. Such an outstanding individual as Ken doesn’t grace our school very often and should not go unrecognized. Our best wishes and best of luck to Ken in his future farming years and with his 40 “udderly beautiful” girls. FRENCH CLUB Cette anhee, beaucoup d’ etudiantes ont participe dans le Club Francais. PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM A The Presidential Classroom is a unique experience in which one student from our school participates. This year that student was Sue Gebo. Interested students sign up to be considered, and based on teacher recommendations, the field is narrowed. The final decision is made by Mr. Behrens, Mrs. Jordan, and Mr. Maratto. The student then spends one week of learning about the government, visiting exciting places in Washington D.C. and meeting people from all over the country. The competition begins. pictured, Mr. Behrens, Kathy Gorman, Joyce Pellock, Mr. Maratto, Sue Gebo, Ms. Jordan SHAKESPEARE CONTEST What was sophomore, Becky Foster doing up on stage every day from early February through mid-March? She was making a ittle SCS history of course! After winning the Shakespeare Recitation Contest organized by Mrs. Folmsbee, here at school, Becky began preparing to be our school’s first-ever representative ;o the Greater Albany Area Shakespeare Recitation Competition sponsored by the English Speaking Union of the United States. Becky was an outstanding competitor with her oral interpretation of the diabolical Lady Macbeth.
