Tribute to a Friend Two: the way it's always been. Yet, tonight, alone. I feel a sudden urge of retreat: But that’s how it's been. All day. We stood together before 1 left. But it wasn't me who's gone. Alone I walk. Silent, bewildered: I've been there before. Although I know I haven't. Talking, laughing, crying. All in one day. All about the same thing: Someone. 1 find a breeze. It feels warm yet cold; Blowing against my face, A chill wraps my soul. I discover I'm alone; Yet 1 don't understand. A glance down brings to me A spot; many spots: Where the fallen leaves Trace themselves on wet pavement. Fallen soldiers of autumn. Brings to mind a walk in a windy field. I pass the old familiar sights. Why do they seem so distant? A shadow on an ancient brick wall, Leaves behind an unnoticed gesture. I’m aware of its presence. But still I am alone. I pass a lonely inn: The keeper content with his solitude. Why can't I be content? A man standing alone; Happy with himself. Why can't I be happy? 1 hear cars muddle past. Unseen by me. How can they listen? They won't even stop. Maybe I hear the wind Rushing through the tree lined street. And then I see a friend. God, I wish he would stop. Talk awhile . . . I forget I'm alone Still dwelling in uninterrupted silence. He drives on. I run to catch him. But he is too fast, Or me too slow. I sigh with despair, Again I'm alone. I walk on. I return to the beginning. I find the breeze Warm, yet cold. This time at my back It rushes through my long coat I am chilled. I've a long ways to go, J To get nowhere. Feeling in the dark My way home. That is where I started; That is where I must end. The fallen leaves on wet pavement. Sing still a different tune. One I've heard before. Yet I'm sure 1 haven't. The soldiers of autumn Rest at their graves. It starts to rain. Or maybe it's always been raining. 1 don’t know. The street lamps glitter Their hazy glow As the full harvest moon. The fall . . . One time I remember; All times I remember The fall. And yet at times. It seems the one I most want to forget. This year I won't forget: Not the walk in the windy field; Not things I wish I'd said; Not the time of two: yet one; Not times we stood together Before I left and he had gone. Tribute to a friend Is just an epitaph of time. Passing on and on and on Right past the time I was alone Reunited by the same Again we stand together 2 -Johnj. Nazarenko
