“
SCHUYLERVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. THE CLASS OF 1973 FINALLY PRESENTS THE” YEARBOOK Tribute to a Friend Two: the way it's always been. Yet, tonight, alone. I feel a sudden urge of retreat: But that’s how it's been. All day. We stood together before 1 left. But it wasn't me who's gone. Alone I walk. Silent, bewildered: I've been there before. Although I know I haven't. Talking, laughing, crying. All in one day. All about the same thing: Someone. 1 find a breeze. It feels warm yet cold; Blowing against my face, A chill wraps my soul. I discover I'm alone; Yet 1 don't understand. A glance down brings to me A spot; many spots: Where the fallen leaves Trace themselves on wet pavement. Fallen soldiers of autumn. Brings to mind a walk in a windy field. I pass the old familiar sights. Why do they seem so distant? A shadow on an ancient brick wall, Leaves behind an unnoticed gesture. I’m aware of its presence. But still I am alone. I pass a lonely inn: The keeper content with his solitude. Why can't I be content? A man standing alone; Happy with himself. Why can't I be happy? 1 hear cars muddle past. Unseen by me. How can they listen? They won't even stop. Maybe I hear the wind Rushing through the tree lined street. And then I see a friend. God, I wish he would stop. Talk awhile . . . I forget I'm alone Still dwelling in uninterrupted silence. He drives on. I run to catch him. But he is too fast, Or me too slow. I sigh with despair, Again I'm alone. I walk on. I return to the beginning. I find the breeze Warm, yet cold. This time at my back It rushes through my long coat I am chilled. I've a long ways to go, J To get nowhere. Feeling in the dark My way home. That is where I started; That is where I must end. The fallen leaves on wet pavement. Sing still a different tune. One I've heard before. Yet I'm sure 1 haven't. The soldiers of autumn Rest at their graves. It starts to rain. Or maybe it's always been raining. 1 don’t know. The street lamps glitter Their hazy glow As the full harvest moon. The fall . . . One time I remember; All times I remember The fall. And yet at times. It seems the one I most want to forget. This year I won't forget: Not the walk in the windy field; Not things I wish I'd said; Not the time of two: yet one; Not times we stood together Before I left and he had gone. Tribute to a friend Is just an epitaph of time. Passing on and on and on Right past the time I was alone Reunited by the same Again we stand together 2 -Johnj. We were born into a society of love, but it was not a universal love. Nuclear devastation and annihilation were the ever present threats. Air raid drills were as common as our present day fire drills. Even though the world was in a state of political turmoil, the people exhibited a mood unequalled by any other. This mood was shown to the world through the music of the ’50's, Rock and Roll. Through this music and the excitement of the time, the youth expressed a unique vivacious- ne s that overwhelmed America. This vivacity was exemplified by such activities assock-hops and telephone booth cramming. Malt shops, D. A. 's and bobbie socks were the in things. As a sharp contrast to the '50 s, with the '60's came unrest not caused by external pressures. We found un- imaginable that the problems were now from within the nation. When we posed the question, Why? , no one seemed to be able to amply supply the answer. We could not put faith in a society that we did not understand. Therefore, we in the '70 s turned to the fifties . . . The problems then were great and varied, but the people seemed not to notice. They found something within themselves to believe in. They showed a unity of strength that overpowered their shadows of fear. It is our past which has made us what we are. We are the children of our own deeds. Conduct has created character; acts have grown into habits; each year has pressed into us a deeper moral print; the lives we have led have left us such as we are today. - John B. Dykes - 5 The Class of 973 Welcomes Dr. Wallace9 District Principal What's in a decade? Ten years - a decade - is a neat, comfortable unit of time. It can be set aside and looked at, talked about, written about, and pondered. It can be missed, decried, analyzed, criticized, revered and, even named, as in the case of the Fabulous Fifties featured in this yearbook. It is the decade in which this senior class membership was born, which gives it a special place in history. TheFiftiesalsoboastedofUncle Miltie, the Yankee powerhouse, the Korean Armistice, Eisen- hower and Stevenson, the Kefauver Hearings, Elvis, bobby socks, sweaters, brush cuts, saddle- shoes, James Dean, the Army-McCarthy contest, ducktails. Sputnik, the Troika, John Glenn, Jonas Salk, and sub-orbital flights. How many of these do you know about? - Benjamin Wallace District Principal 6 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ✓ 7 Board of Education Mr. Donald larmon President Mr. Melvin Wrisley Clerk Mr. F. Tomorrow is too late, yesterday is gone. When you don your cap and gown will your eyes take in those who were close to you, or, more important, will they take in those who you may have wronged, those you may have tread upon unknowingly, or perhaps in revenge? What of those whose path you've crossed daily, and had not even taken the time to extend a small part of yourself with a simple hello - help? And yet you are those who shall take hold of the reigns of this world and bring it peace. You shape the future, you correct the mistakes of the past. Now is not too late to correct your own mistakes. Look at those who sit beside you, are they not worthy of your smile? Help mankind, extend yourself. - Leonard Blowers When again we meet if such an occasion arises, perhaps you shall be a doctor, and perhaps you shall be an attorney. And perhaps I shall be a vagrant, or perhaps a hermit. But shall you be one to judge me for what I am? Or shall you be one to accept me for what 1 am? Perhaps you shall be a politician, and I a layman. Perhaps you shall be an actor, and I a car- penter. But is not the air you breath and the air I breath one and the same? Do we not share the same planet? Remember . . . though you be doctor, attorney, politician, or actor. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I am a friend, I am a orother. As you, I hope, are mine. - Reinhold Niebuhr - Leonard Blowers 72 Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means the predominance of courage over timidity, of adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than in a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair - these bow the heart and turn the spirit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the starlike things, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what-next, and the joy of the game of living. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. Gunn's stay here was a pleasure and a rewarding experience for the entire community. We. the class of '73, sincerely hope that her stay here was as enjoyable for her as it was for us. 97 Advisors for the Class of Miss Gronczniak, Freshman Advisor MissLiefl, Sophomore Advisor Miss Pickett, Senior Advisor Miss Deno, Yearbook Advisor V We, the class of '73 would like to express our ap- preciation to our advisors, who have put up with our nonsense for the last four years. As freshmen, we gave Miss Gronczniak headaches as we planned our first dance, Incense and Peppermints. Well, we allmadeit to our sophomoreyear, poor Miss Liefl. Our Senior year made the memories com plete with the '50's dance, the trip, the yearbook. . . and two won- derful people. Miss Pickett and Miss Deno.
