FORMIDABLE OPPONENTS ln spite of only six wins in twenty starts the Bears had a happy season of haskethall. They dropped the opener to Brazil 36-42 hut came home to win from New Market in the second game, 52-43. Four days later the Black Cats of Tech exploded all over the Bears in the first of our city series, 62-4-3. But again the Bears came hack on their own floor to heat Mecca 53-49, and Utter Creek 36-32. The Golden Bears were soundly spanked hy the Vigo County champs, Honey Creek, 36-59. A trip to Vincennes proved disasterous hecause the Wahash Valley runner-up, Central Catholic, sent the Bears scurrying home with a 7l-54 stinger. Switz City, the Walrasll Valley and Regional champions. was a little more kind to the Bears, a 62-5l victory for the Tigers. Then there were the three heart-hreakers lost to Wiley--hy three points in the Valley, nine points at home, and four points in the sectional. But winning the final sched- uled game from St. ,lohn's, Loogootee, 62-44, gave a happy ending to the season. . mth, lowering Schulte center, tips the hall starting the l954-55 opener with Brazil's Red Devils. A hrilliant first quarter raised our hopes high. Schulte led l2-6, hut the Red Devils arose to return an l8-l5 lead at the half. The undaunted Bears fought a steady hattle in the second half, hut it was not quite enough to catch the Red Devils. Larry 0'Brien's five fielders gave indication of his eventual uMost Valu- ahle Player title. Although the initial game scored a close loss for the Colden Bears, it set the pace for the scrappy quintetis season.
