THE GOLDEN BEARS The Schulte Golden Bears in their first year of roaming the football trails, clawed out an impressive first page for future football annals. Coach Pete Varda, the Giant Killer, felled seven of his nine seasoned foes with his newly forged squad. Their surprising display of gridiron prowess gave warning to all forthcoming opponents that they would have to be reckoned with. GIBAULT Commencing with the opener at Gibault, the Bears showed that they had the in- gredients of a fine, precision-like team as they ground out a rugged, yet convincing. victory over a stubborn Gibault eleven. Moreland scored the first touchdown of the year which was paved by Stergar. With the final whistle, we were still on top with the lone touchdown. WILEY Still hungry after their first taste of blood, the Bears met the Wiley B team. In the opening quarter, after having their first attack throttled on the twelve yard line, the HI-Bears retaliated when Whitey Hoop- ingarner alertly recovered a Wiley fumble on their nine yard line. With Kulinski di- recting, the Bears rolled into high gear as he passed to O'Leary for a touchdowng then Stergar converted. Final score, 7-0. CLINTON Still rampaging, Schulte next attacked the Clinton Junior High eleven. The Bears started things rolling as Stergar clicked with a pass to Moreland. The uprights were split and Schulte led, 7-0. Hungry for more, the 'tBears found a loose ball and moments later Davis struck pay dirt. The second half brought more aerial fireworks as the crowd saw Neidlinger pull in a Garvin pass in the end zone. Kulinski connected once more as the Green and Gold took home their third victory, 26-0. GARFIELD C Now feeling their oats, the Bears moved to Twelve Points where Garfield put their C team on the field to lock horns with our boys. That was their biggest mistake as the Bears rolled over the Eaglets, 30-0. Kulin- ski, Garvin, and Davis scored in the first half. In the second after Paul Hegarty, nose-guard and all, bulled his way for 20 yards after intercepting a pass on our 48, Kulinski flipped a short pass to Neidlinger for the fourth touchdown. Garvin then took over for the Bears as he reeled off two long runs, 43 and 25 yards. Minutes later. our line as- sumed the scoring burden as Hoopingarner pounced on a fumble in their end zone for a SCOY8. '23
