The Mountaineers, playing their first season of inde- pendent basketball, had more than their share of hard luck during the 1957-58 season, but wound up with 13 wins and 15 losses against some of the outstanding junior college and College B teams in the Southwest, and achieved a very respectable .484 win average in a gruel- ing 28-game season. Coach Verdell Turner had four letter-men back from the 1957 team that placed second in the Pioneer Confer- ence. Tommy Stuart, center and forward, Chuck Lodek, guard, George Pierot, forward, and Chief Robison, center, were the nucleus around which he began work in No- vember. Charley Iohnson, 1957 squadmcm, joined the squad in early season workouts and added some reserve strength during the first semester, but transferred to an- other college at rnid-year. Lodek, on whom Coach Turner had counted on very strongly to make an outstanding man this year withdrew from school during the Christmas vacation. These losses reduced a small squad to an ir- reducible minimum: on several occasions during the year the limit on personal fouls cleaned the bench for the Mountaineers, who played the latter part of the season with absolutely no reserve strength, Dale Glaze, Carroll Cole, and Kenny Coleman, new- comers to the squad, found themselves playing regular ball for the Mountaineers from the very first game, and by mid-Iomuary, Glaze and Cole were regarded as good a pair of guards as may be found in junior college circles. Coleman had several fine games after mid-term. and by the season's end had made a name for himself as a flashy forward who is hard to stop. Chief Robison, high scorer for the Mountaineers, had two men assigned to guard him in nearly every game, but turned in an outstanding per- formance under the basket. George Pierot and Tommy Stuart, dependable rebound men, did their part on de- fense and came through with good scoring efforts in sev- eral games. Al Singbusch, a freshman who had very little basketball experience, worked hard at the job and got in several games by season's end. After an opening win over San Antonio College in November the Mountaineers took to the road and absorbed shellackings from Victoria and Del Mar, followed by cr 4-point home loss to San Angelo. In the San Antonio Iunior College tournament, Schreiner won the consolation round after cm initial loss to Victoria and a win over Na- varro and San Antonio. A home game with Wharton was next and the Mountaineers lost again: then followed the West Texas road trip where they again lost to Howard County and Texas Tech Fresh. In the Howard County toumament at Big Spring at the close of the Christmas va- cation, however, the Mounties showed the results of their hard work in early season games: they whipped Wharton and Temple soundly, lost to Arkansas City Cliansasl in the semi-finals, and defeated Amarillo in a 2-pointer to gain third place in the tournament. Two home games were then won, with another victory over San Antonio and a repeat over Temple, the latter being the first game in three years that the Mountaineers went over 100 points. Arlington State took a 2-pointer in Arlington, and repeated at Kerrville the ,next week in the second game of the two-night doubleheader, when Schrein- er had first won from Southwest Texas B team by one point in an over-time thriller. Then followed sweet revenge on Del Mar on the home court, followed by a loss to Wharton and a win over Mc- Murry B. The Mountaineers dropped down to the bottom the following week cmd lost to Temple, but took another over-time battle from STSTC B in San Marcos the fol- lowing night. An astounding victory over Victoria fol- lowed, with only 5 regulars suited up: they came through with a 10-point win. The following week the Mountaineers could do little good at San Angelo and at Abilene, and lost the last regular games to the Rams and the McMur- IIBISII. TY The first week in March Schreiner journeyed to Ama- rillo to enter the Regional tournament for the National Iunior College Athletic Conference, drew Odessa in the first round, and dropped a heart-breaker by 3 points to the West Texas crew. As in practically all other games, the lack of reserve strength told the story. I I 'ib Lg1.,.' I Q 'lid T77 F5 , 7 vi F m V ti 4 P an M L Ir? ff M f x V. . --if: Q LQ .Il ' S3 ... With the ranks of the 1956 team almost completely depleted because of graduation, the 1957 Rebels, with a late start and very little previous football experience, had a hard time in breaking into the win column. The Asian ilu also had something to do with a badly interrupted football season, since an already short schedule was broken into by postponements and cancellations, thus mak- ing it impossible for the coaching staff and the squad to plan an organized campaign. No games were played until October 4, and since an inexperienced team can learn only under actual game conditions, every one of the teams met by the Rebels had from 3 to 5 more games under their belts than the home club. By October 4, date of the first game with a greatly improved Rocksprings club, the Rebels were ready and willing to battle their opponents all over the field, but mistakes cost them dearly, although fans were impressed with the Rebels fight and spirit in coming back and over- coming a Rocksprings lead of 13 points to tie up the game at 13-13.
