Lanham 1u,.r,,, ,, F W Sign taping outside of Corpus was everybody's job Satterwhite snores on Mary Nell's soft shoulder October 12. 1950, is a day that will be remembered by two busloads of Schreiner students for a long time to come. It was that day when the Mountaineer band, the color guard, the yell leaders, and a number ol the football reserves boarded two chartered busses and headed toward the coast . . . Corpus Christi bound. Going down was lots of fun . . . coming back was lots of fun . . . and being in Corpus was quite the thing. Although the trip was saddened by a 37-14 loss to the Del Mar Vikings, it was a great day in the lives of the happy contingent of cadets and co-eds who made the coastward voyage. Eating was a popular diversion that night. CHRISTMAS DINNER Every year the highlight of the Christmas Season is the big dinner served the evening before the be- ginning of the holidays. The dining room lit by candles is richly decorated and the cadets, in many cases surrounded by their parents and friends, begin to realize that school life is really wonderful, after all. ' 'K Don Martin, B. N. Smith, and W. I. Blewitt, pose for cameraman while Miss Walker noncha- lantly puffs her stogie. Ma Edwards is en- grossed in listening to- the Schreiner quartet 5 1 The Crank's table, and a bunch ol football players looking up from their turkey. With cigars and satis- fied appetites, Io Ann, Frank, Frances, Alleen and Burnard get set to enjoy some music at the Christmas Dinner. FOOTBALL I950 Behind the excellent., leadership of Head Coach Claude Gilstrap and as- sistants Rex Kelly and Ted Carley, the 1950 Schreiner Mountaineers com- pleted the most successful grid season in ten years by winning a total of seven games and dropping only three. Sparked by Co-Captains Edgar Sorsby and W. C. Corbin. the Schrei- ner squad started off the season in fine fashion by winning their first three games, and providing Kerrville 95 61- 12005 S we 265' YP Chow 1,695 fans with an undefeated season of home games. Bristol Steele, hard-hitting lineman and former Marine. won a place on the all-Pioneer Conference offensive team: and Corbin and end Raymond Berry copped places on the all-Con- ference defensive team. The driving punts of Don Richardson, leading con- ference booter, contributed heavily to the success of the 1950 season. CWC RU Conference Lfneman SCHREINER 27 - SOUTHMOST 0 The maroon and white clad Mountaineers gave their 1950 grid debut in rousing fashion in the newly formed Pioneer Conference. We need this one was the battle-cry on that hot, blistering night as such high school greats as Gene Hooper. Louis Pantuso. Raymond Berry, and Henry Wig- gers ran wild against a highly favored Brownsville team, ln the opening minutes Pantuso sprinted 85 yards for the first of a long line of tallies. Bill Thompson made the PAT good. A new, untried defensive platoon came in and held Brownsville's raging offense scoreless. lt was in the closing minutes of the half that l4O pounds of dynamite in the forrn of Gene Hooper broke between Steele and Earney for a 33 yard jaunt and 6 points. As the second half opened, Thompson retained his flawless quarterbaclcing and opened up a devastating aerial attack that paid off in a 37 yard pass to Wiggers and another to Berry for 25 yards and a TD. Iohnson, Moore and Travis offered a thorny ridge for the Brownsville line. 1 'ov Y-ii rrvflle 5-haf' BILLY ACORD' gn! ,, ,.,.,. 1'-V-, . Defensive End SCHREINER 42 - EDINBURG 13 Schreiners potent offensive 'lll , supported by a stub- born defense, engulfed Edinburg with 422 yards rushing to 23. Early in the first quarter, Berry pocketed 6 of Thomp- son's 9 passes for two scores, and before Edinburg could recover, an unheralded back, George Lcrbczr, sprinted ll times over left end for 82 yards and 5 first downs. As opposition began to stiffen, yeornen Scnsom, Moore. Allen and Acord responded gallantly to a call for more heavy duty. Edinburg went on the score in the third quarter on an intercepted pass and again in the fourth, but it was the fighting cadets' ball game all the way as Richardson raced 127 yards between gaping holes made by Lock and Scott and led by Earney and All- Conference tackle, Bristol Steele. Late in the fourth quarter, as coach Gilstrap began to clear the bench, Corbin raced 95 yards to score behind fine blocking led by Kellett, Goeke, and May. Other fine offensive plays were rnade by Sorsby, Day and Kelley. The defense was well taken care of by Travis and Hill. Swivel- hipped George Labar dashed 55 yards, but only to be brought back as the squad was penalized one ot the twelve times for 170 yards. One of the highlights of the game was Don Richardson's 8 boots for an average ot 48 yards. Collaborating as blockers, Scott and Sorsby were the often- sive standouts as West gained first downs consistently. Deten- sive greats were Iohnson, Acord and Windsor as the Lutherans soon found out. Berry caught two passes for 38 yards and 28 yards via Alexander in the first quarter. 93 yards and 6 points were the story as Richardson maintained his 30.9 yard season's kick-off returns. Only once did the Pirates get out of hand and even the score 13-13 but over a ton of outstanding defensive cadets led by Allen, Iohnson, and Acord put the ball back into friendly hands. This time it was Thompson who passed, faked and handed the ball off to Corbin, Neal and West time and again with deadly precision. A delayed buck through the middle by Neal was good for a first, a pass to Sorsby via Thompson was good for another, but the pay-off came when pavement pounding West Went 38 yards for 5 points late in the fourth quarter. Bristol Steele and Paul Earney contributed largely to the down-field block- ing, an asset to winning. Bruns, Lock and Scott did a laudable job in open- ing fine holes for Corbin, Kelley and Carpenter. These two senior college squads proved to be real com- petition for the Carleymen, but the excellent physical condition of the Mountaineers was too much for the West Texans in the last quarters of the games. Schreiner ended its pre-Christmas schedule against Texas Luth- eran College of Seguin, racking up their llth straight win by a 70-48 score. Returning from the Christmas holidays, the Mountaineers played a two-game stand away from home, suffering their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Hardin-Simmons University Freshmen, 53-67. They bounded back, however. on their way home as they defeated a quintet of Daniel Baker Hillbillies, 57-49, in Brownwood. Conference play was begun when Schreiner met San Angelo College on the Mountaineer hardwoods. The 56-50 victory put the Cadets atop the Conference standings. Then the Ma- roons traveled to Austin where they were victims of a 28-45 defeat by the University of Texas Freshmen. Another loss came at the hands of a speedy Southwest Texas State College B team, 65-62, before an excited home crowd. The Mountaineers then returned to the road and dropped a pair of important conference games to Arlington State's Blue Riders by 67- 50 and 36-35 scores. But then an inspired squad of Schreiner players rose to the heights of good teamwork and accurate shooting when they thrilled a packed Schreiner gym on the night of Febru- ary 6 by defeating the University of Texas Freshmen, 54-52. It took an overtime period to do it, but the Mountaineers came out vic- torious over the almost unbeatable University quintet. This win set the Mountaineers on another winning streak as they defeated Arlington State two straight games, 74-57 and 52-35 in a pair of home games. The Tarleton Plowboys, one of the principal contenders for the confer- ence crown, split with the Shreiner team in a two-game stand in Kerrville. The Cadets took the first contest by a 70-61 score, but the Tarleton team used the remaining five seconds to score two free shots and come out on top of a 56-55 score in the second game. San Angelo's Rams edged the Maroons out by a 55-53 margin and then fell to a heavy Schreiner onslaught the following night, 53-44, to split a two-game conference stand in San Angelo. The greatest heartbreaker of the year came on Saturday night, February 24, when San Angelo broke cr 46-46 deadlock in the final half-second by shooting a field goal immedi- ately before the final horn blew. Although the ball passed through the basket after the horn had blown, the officials ruled that it was good, and the Rams won an unbelievable 48-46 thriller. The conference championship was decided by the final game. 5 'lm If X an hw Q X NAME Fred Saunders Iames Payne Rogers Douglas Bays Bryant Fred McDaniel Ierry Patton Donley Long Dixie Walker Billimac Bradley Leon Sefton Dale Parker Ronald Deason Bill Ed Foster Billie Stuart Gene Hooper Ioe Morrison H.
