PHI THETA KAPPA Schreiner's Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national junior college honor fraternity, is an organization for boys who have shown excellence in their scholastic work. The chapter enjoyed an un- usually successful year as fourteen pledges were chosen by the faculty and initiated by club members. Of special significance during the year was the fact that the national office of Vice President was held by a local member, Garland Lang, who attended the National Convention in Sacramento, California. This was the motto adopted by Coaches Weir, Kelly, and Wilc'ox, the four letter-men, and the eight squad-men who began pre-season football training early in September of 19-10. On the night of November Zlnd, Schreiner Institute and Kerrville realized the dream of five long years. The last undis- puted championship in football was won in 1955 when Schreiner defeated the College of Marshall in a late-season game, also played in Kerrville. ln 1937 the Moun- taineers tied Kilgore for the conference title, and in 1938 and 1939 Schreiner placed second to Kilgore in the conference race. Otherwise the years have been dry, despite the fact that Mountaineers have had out- standing teams in the interim. THIZ B TIIA M 1 1 sp. VN Q ,1- ' ,V :V V -SA COACHES Klil.l.Y. WIZIR. Since the four letter-men were also linemen, it is easy to see that the Mountaineers were due to have a strong line in 1940, and so it turned out to be. Only two touchdowns were scored on the Cadets during the 1940 season, and only one of these was made by a junior college. In the season's opener with Southwestern, Schreiner played the senior college aggregation to a scoreless tie until the fading minutes, when the experience of the Georgetown boys put over one touch- down. It was late in the season when the Mountaineers had their goal line crossed againg john Tarleton was the offender on this occasion. 13 e WWC' - i my 'IQ 112' Vi, - J . fflovl! Most of the end play was handled by joe Smith and Sid Halliday after the injury to john Ellis. Many were the substitutions made necessary in the backfield because of injuries, and at no time did Coach Weir know just what the backfield combination would be two or three days later. Tom Balls punting, Ravens brokenfield running, Ledford Smiths blocking and running, the head-work of Dub Graham and Raven at the signal-calling post, the work of Arfman and Elliott at the fullback job, Hawkins' punting and blocking in the Kil- gore game, and Tiner's all-round playfall are worthy of mention and commendation. It is only possible, therefore, to predict that the Mountaineers will give a very satisfactory account of themselves in the conference meet, in spite of bad weather throughout the spring that has hampered workouts and has made it impossible for the tracksters to reach the peak form that has been so noticeable in squads of former years. In early season meets, Schreiner gave a very satisfactory per- formance, particularly in winning the Fat Stock Show meet in Fort Worth in March for the second consecutive year. Capmifz, HERBERT HOLCHAK FLOERKE TENNI At the beginning of the 1941 tennis season not much was known about the prospects except that Holchak, who was elected captain, was a good foun- dation on which to build a new team. After several days of tryouts it devel- oped that Stennis, Mortimer, Floerke, Ostrom, Long, E., Skinner, Herring, and Richards were going to make it plenty tough for their opponents dur- ing the season. In the first meet of the season with the University of San Antonio, Schrei- ner made a clean sweep, winning the four singles and the two doubles matches. The following week the Schreiner team won all six matches played against the Texas Lutheran College team. At Kingsville Schreiner was able to break even with the strong Texas A. 84 I. team. With this fine record behind them, we feel sure that the Maroon and White tennis players will give a good account of themselves at the conference meet at Arlington. ,S TI -1 fi? W '-L sxl X . He has been ably supported throughout the year by Alexander, Arfman, Felder, Barttlingck, Logan, Garrett, Bowen, Newberry, McNutt, Waugh, and Rice. At the time the Remll went to press there was a neck and neck race between North-and-East Barracks and West Barracks for the plaque that is awarded to the winner at the end of each year. Sportsmanship prevailed throughout each competition and all were enthusiastically entered into by all students who did not have the opportunity to play with any of the school athletic teams.
