JR. National Wce-President for 1940-L1 Schreiner's Alpha Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa enjoyed a very successful year. The large delegation to the National Convention at Lawton, Oklahoma, the election of one of its members to a National office, and an excellent pledge group made 1940 memorable. The activi- ties of the year began with a banquet in honor of the fifteen pledges, which was followed by the pledge ceremony. The final initiation ceremonies were held Wednesday night, April 3. Tommie Thomas, Ray Bailey, Ted Patton, John Harris, Garland Lang, and Chapter Presi- dent Earl Smith represented Schreiner at Lawton. They returned with Garland Lang as National Vice-President. Blackburn, Cauley, King, Kincheloe, Looney, Smith and Driskell were the standouts in this game, This was the first out-of-town game for the Moun- taineers. SAN MARCOS BOBCATS The Mountaineers lost their first game ol' the season in the annual grudge battle with the San Marcos Teachers by a 6-0 score. The Mountaineers had a splendid chance to score in the first quarter but the XVeirmen proved to be their own worst enemies when they fumbled soon afterward. ln the second quarter the Mountaineers started a touch- down drive when Looney received a lateral from Blackburn and made about 30 yards. The Red and VVhite clad warriors attempted a field goal from the 13 but failed. Driskell and Smith were by far the outstanding backs for Schreiner with Looney, King, and Saxon Judd performing well in the line. The Mountaineers were held off until Driskell took a flat pass to the left for the first touchdown. After a lateral from Blackburn to Judd, Field made the second touchdown. Ellis' kick for extra point was good. The Bearcats retaliated with a touchdown drive aftei' the Weirmeifs score. The Schreiner passing combination, Smith to King or Judd, was clicking and P. D. MATTHEWS MORALES WILKINS The entire Schreiner line won its share of laurels in this game, but King at end and Looney, guard, were especially outstanding. P. D. Cauley played the best game of the year when he showed all the home folks how to play the center position. Driskell, Smith, and .lack Judd were standouts in the backfield. TARI.ETON'S PLOWBOYS The best game of the season, Schreiner versus John Tarleton, ended with the scoreboard reading 13-7 in favor of the Mountaineers. LEAL KNIGHT MCDONALD HENDRICKS 3 1 ON THE The Mountaineers had another good year on the basketball courts in 1940. They played 26 games, won 18, and lost 8. Total points are 1,197 for Schreiner, 931 for all opponents. A game average of 46 points was set by the Cadets, or slightly over a point a minute for the entire season, good shooting in any- bodyls league. High scorer for the sea- son was Captain Saxon Judd, playing at forward, with 335 points. His near- est competitor was Roscoe Morris, cen- ter, of San Antonio, with 256 points. This year's play unearthed some fine material from among the new men. Bill Underwood of Houston played a fine game at forward. Charles Manichia, also a Houston boy, turned in a creditable performance at guard. A third Houston player, tower- ing Billy Blackburn, replaced Morris at center whenever needed. These boys, with the veterans, Saxon Judd, Morris, and Wayne Millsap, of San Angelo, rounded out the starting line-up. Cummins placed first in the high and low hurdles, high jump, and broad jump, tied for first in the pole vault, was fourth in the hundred-yard dash, and was a member of the dash relay team.
