Dee Davrs rs referred to as the second sorrrest whrte nran rn Sabrnal Hes town scavenver works at nrvht and sleeps most of the day He ll probably be awake long about four 0 clock rn the evenrng and more than ready to tell you the krnd of yarns you want to hear We found hrm just awakrnv from hrs sresta He sat on a voatskrn rn the door on the shady srde of the house Dee Davrs vot strung out rn no trme You see sard Dee Davrs Dad and Uncle Ben were frontrersmen of the old style and whrle theyd had a lot of experrences they drdnt know a thrnv about mrnerals Along back rn the 80 s they took up some state land on Mud Creek east of Del Rro and bevun tryrng to farm The old Spanrsh crossrng on Mud was worn deep and always washed but rt was strll used a lrttle Well one day not lonv after an awful rarn Dad and Uncle Ben started to town They were Uornv down rnto the creek when what should show up rrght square rn the old trarl but the corner of some sort of metal bar They prred the bar out and then three other bars The stuff was so heavy that after they put rt rn the bufwy they had to walk and lead the horse lnstead of Uornff on rnto town wrth rt they went back home Well they turned rt over to Ma and then more or less forgot all about rt I Guess just went on strugf lrng for a lrvrnv Ar that trme l was strll a krd and was away from home workrnfr but l happened to rrde rn just a few days after the frnd The Old Man and Uncle Ben never mentroned rt but as soon a l ot rnsrde the house Ma sard she wanted to show me somethrnfr She carrred me to a bed pulled up part of the cover that draped over to the floor and told me to look l looked and by herfers there was bars as brv as hogs Nothrng was done however We were a long ways from any krnd of buyrnv center and never saw anybody l dont know how long those bars mrvht have stayed rrvht there under that bed rf rt hadnt been for a surveyor My dad was a mrffhty rnterestrnv talker and thrs surveyor used to come to see hrm Well on one of these vrsrts he stayed all nr hr and slept on the bed that hrd the bars Then of course he wot the whole story Well says the surveyor youd better let me vrt rt assayed lm fvornv down to Preclras Nevras rn my wafwrn next week and can take rt alonv as well as not The upshot was that he took all the bars Two or three months later when Dad saw hrm and asked hrm how the assay turned out he krnder lauvhed and says Aw pshaw twant nothrnv but babbrttrng Then he wenl on to explarn how hed left the whole caboodle down there to Predras Negras because rt wasnt worth haulrng back Well rt wasnt but a short trme before we notrced that thrs surveyor who had been dow poor was burldrnv a food house and buyrng land He always seemed to haxe money and went rrvht up Old Dee shrfted hrs posrtron on the goatskrn and started on another yarn You see the old Spanrsh trarl crossed over rnto Texas from Mexrco at the mouth of the Pecos Rrver came gold and srlver out of Mexrco The country was full of lndrans rts strll full of dead Spanrards and of bullron and bags of money that the lndrans captured and burred or caused the orrvrnal owners to bury Semrnole Hrll hrdes a lot of that treasure Last wrnter an old Mexrcan pastor named Santrarro wa tayrnv here rn Sabrnal wrth some of hrs parrentcs Accordrnv to hrs story he went prrootrnv rnto a cave one day and stepped rrght on top of more money than hed ever seen before all put together It was just layrng there on the floor He bevan to gather some of rt up and had three preces rn hrs halo when he heard the terrrblest norse behrnd hrm he had ever heard rn all hrs born days He sard rt was lrke the sounds of trace charns rattlrng and drred cow hrdes berng drug at the end of a rope and panther yells and the groans of a dyrng man all mrxed up He was scared half out of hrs skrn He Got out of the cave as fast as hrs levs would carry hrm An hour or so later when hed kmder collected hrs wrts he drscovered three of the corns strll rn hrs halo They were old square dobe dollars lrke the Spanrsh used to make Well you know how superstrtrous Mexrcans are Wrld horses couldnt draw old Santraffo back rnsrde that cave but he promrsed to take me out there and show me the mouth of rt We were just wartrnv for mrlder weather when somebody sent rn here and not hrm to herd sheep Maybe hell be back thrs wmter If he rs well go ut to the cave Ir wont take but a day Dee Davrs rolled another crvarette from hrs supply of Black Horse leaf tobacco and corn shucks What ld rather get at he resumed rs that old smelter across the Rro Grande rn Mexrco just below the mouth of the Pecos That smelter wasnt put there to Urrnd corn on borl trrjoles rn roast Goat rrbs over or any thrn lrke that No mrster not for anythrnv lrke that lr s krnder under a bluff that fronts the rrver lr was a bw mrne It s covered up now by a bed of gravel that has probably washed rn there durrnfr the last ewhty or nrnety years All a man has to do to uncover the shaft rs to take a few teams and scrapers and clear out the gravel The mouth of the shaft wrll then be as plarn as daylrght That wrll take a lrttle caprtal You ouvht to do thrs l wrsh you would All l want rs a thrrd for my rnformatron As soon as my boy Gets to be twelve years old he s nrne now lm gornr, out rn that country and use some of the knowledfre lve been accumulatrnff Then Dee Davrs wrll look for srlver bars out of Mud Creek as br as hogs and heaps of old square dobe dollars rn Santrago s cave on Semrnole Hrll and somewhere rn the gravel down under the bluff a rrch mrne that a few mules and scrapers mrfvht uncover rn a day and maybe so the olden Lrpano out rn the Santa Rosas beyond and certarnly and above all the reat Lost Nrvver Mrne of free old far up the Rro Bravo rn the solrtude of the Brg Bend Dee Daxls IS Just one of Coronados Chlldfen Condensed from Comrrarln s llrrlrlrur Lhwpter X ll Mrdas On A Goatskrn ' - ,, s ' ,, 1 . . . r 5 r . 5 . .
