CLIO AND RETORT 1492-1776-1954 Clio has again been busy, not only in studying history but in making it. Interesting programs for monthly meetings were carefully planned by Chief Historian Kay Bradley and aids, Anne Guerry, Veep, and Secretary Heather Green. In conjunction with the American Legion, Clio spon- sored a highly successful forum. A very enjoyable event of the year was the spring trip, including a visit to the New York Stock Exchange and attendance at a Broadway play, Kismet. Climaxing a busy year Clio, through Treasurer Martha Sykes, donated a clock for the school lobby. Hats off to Clio and its adviser, Mrs. Johnson, for out- standing school service. Wilma Rohloff Kay Bradley Physics and chem students with high averages were admitted into Retort, Port High's honorary science club. During the meetings, presided over by President, Richard Rhodes, Veep, Ronald Cerank, and Secre- 22 tary-Treasurer, Bill Brown, the members gave talks on various subjects or performed experiments. Largely through the efforts of Retort, Fred Hoctor, a former student of Port Washington schools, demon- strated the House of Magic in assembly. The year was enlivened by a fascinating trip to the Waldemar Research Laboratory. The founder, Mr. Pickett, is the back bone of the club. Everyone hopes he will remain a great deal longer, for what would the chem lab be like without the oft quoted Pickettisms? Bob Pratt

F R AT R Y FRATRY OFFICERS Frotry is the Boy's Service Organization, and through '53-'54 it could not have lived up to that title better. Under the leadership of Adviser, Mr. Horton; President, Eugene Santiciolli; Vice President, Herbert Watson; Secretary-Treas- urer, William Thompson, Fratry had its organizational fin- ger in many pies. During the entire fall and winter sports competition at home, the fellows handled the sale of re- freshments. Only twenty-five dollars of the over one thou- sand dollars grossed through such sales went into the club treasury, the rest enriching the G. O. Later in the year the boys again displayed their ability for making money by presenting the social and financial success of the season, the Fratry Dance. Cash awards were given to the winners of the Fratry-sponsored Talent Show. The Fratry Cup went to the best actor of the interclass plays. At the end of the year the Fratry award for sportsmanship and athletic achievement went to a member of the Senior Class. Com- munity-wise, Fratry aided the Red Cross and Civil Defense in their projects. The original purpose of the club as set up in 1926, was to foster good citizenship, assist in school activities, and make the members useful in school affairs. Through this past year Fratry has indeed achieved this purpose, and more. It has provided a standard of performance respected within the school. David Kane 21

FOCUS AND LIBRARY oClCjllti ! sActi on ! C. am era 1 U»RA« °ff'CWS Focus, the camera club of Port High, was founded to stimulate interest in photography. At the meetings, held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, the members of Focus heard lectures, dis- cussed current happenings in the field of photog- raphy, and watched dark-room demonstrations. In addition to this, the members went on field trips at various times throughout the year. This year the officers of this interesting club were: President, Matthew Seddon; Veep, Johnny Davidson; Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Pickett. Mr. Dimmick served as the faculty adviser. Arnold Schlingheyde Worm,!! Seventeen girls on the libray staff decided to or- ganize into a club this year to discuss problems relating to the library. Officers were: President, Elizabeth Miller; Vice President, Eleanor Dietz; Sec- retary, lone Newbold. Various jobs were assigned to be done during free periods. The members were responsible for certain shelves of books or had a special duty, such as send- ing overdue notices, checking in new magazines, typ- ing, or circulating study hall lists. The favorite job, that of taking charge of the desk, was shared by all. Directed by Mrs. Begeneau, the club had func- 23 tioned very efficiently. Marie Jackson
