Dedication The School of the Ozarks is honored in having the privilege of dedi- cating the 1939 Ozarka to Mr. Joseph Ashcroft. In Mr. Ashcroft's city, Poplar Bluff, Missouri, he is known as a prominent and outstanding citizen, who is vitally interested in all civic activities. At The School of the Ozarks we know him as a very lovable character, a man who has time in the midst of his busy life to give a cheering word to a boy journeying along, and who for many years has found time to visit the School annually, look over the grounds and become acquainted with the boys and girls and the teachers. He has created for himself a spot all his own in our midst. It was Mr. Ashcroft who established the commercial department at the School many years ago. He has provided typewriters and all the equip- ment and has paid the teacher's salary. During these years we have had this department, hundreds of girls and boys have been trained in practi- cal commercial work. But Mr. Ashcroft has been more than a contributor of funds to the School. He has been a friend to the boys and girls, has known them in- timately, and loved and encouraged them. He typifies the kind of folk who truly make The School of the Ozarks possible. We could tell you about Mr. Ashcroft's travels at home and abroad, about his lovely home, and the distinctions and honors that have been his, but we like best to think of him in the lesser lights, a humble, simple, lovable man, truly big of heart and big of spirit, a pioneer of the old school. If you would like to know Mr. Ashcroft, go into his community and ask the ordinary man about him, ask the man of modest and humble circumstances, the man who walks along the street, the man whom Mr. Ashcroft has befriended, and you will find that half of the story has not been told. I So, we make our bow to this business man, who is simple of heart, lovable of character, and helpful and considerate in all his associations.
