O SPOT in America is richer in Indian lore and relic than the Ozarks. On the hilltops one may pick up the remains of their chipped arrows, While in the foothills large flat stones and moss covered mounds mark their resting places, and many of our towns and streams bear their christening. We are happy to honor the memory of this brave but fast departing race by making 'it into a theme which we have Woven through this book. We know we have not measured up, To all that we should be 5 But in the years to come, we'll try To prove our loyalty. The time has come, the Seniors said, To talk of many things: Of caps and gowns and Es ' and FS Of cave trips and of rings. One would not think to see us now Four years ago we stood, On Weak and wobbling legs to talk To Mr. R. M. Good. We've grown a heap, we've learned a lot, We've passed through every stage, From bashful, blushing boy and girl To students wise and sage. Our history teacher is the best to be had, She teaches the good as well as the bad, Phillip II has faults as we will confess, And commercial trade rises under the Good Queen Bess. The fact of Geometry we can't comprehend, But perhaps enlightenment some one will send 5 So we sit in the class and our time we abide, While we prove triangles congruent by S.A.S. We may be the goats now, but next year it will be our turn to look down on the freshies , and consider ourselves far su- perior to them. Next year We shall be Wise Fools and from there We Will go on up the ladder of education until we graduate. ' Our class consists of many more than any previ- ous Freshman class, but we have had fewer failures than any class preceding us in the history of the School of the Ozarks. We are not perfect, of course, but We are as near so as could be expected. Also the class has abetter average grade than 'any class before us. Our president, Mr. Good, says that the class this year is an honor to the School of the Ozarks. In nineteen and thirty-one. we expect to compose the largest class of graduating seniors that this school has ever turned out. Great things are expected of the individuals of this class in the, future. Some of our boys and girls Will, perhaps, become members of the State Legislature, the House of Representatives, or the Senateg While others will become missionaries of the Crossin home field or in lands beyond the seas, and others may be Christian nurses or Red Cross workers. Whatever career they pursue, they will be successful, for their training was re- ceived at The School of the Ozarks. 233 Trlfim,-as qfsifni W' rn-4.7, ,.Sf:fsi--ww-msssx ' r' ' ' . 'The three-fold aim, Educational, Vocational and Spiritual, has always been strict- ly adhered to in the work of the school. We feel, as those vs ho first estab- lished the school felt, that any system of education that meets the needs of the present day, must include character building in its program g and so We place the Bible in the fore-front with the other subjects taught in our school. It is significant that the chair of Bible was the first to receive endowment in our institution. The purpose of the course is to give the student a comprehensive know- ledge of the Scriptures, during the four years required for graduation. We attempt to throw around the lives of the students, who come to us, the best influence possible, by making religion a matter of every day walk and con- versation-our aim is to send them out christian men 'and women. We have had to work under serious handicaps, in that we have had to hold all our services in one of the dormitories, since we had no chapel for such religious services 5 and yet the record of our school shows that very few of our students graduate without becoming professing Christians. Every student is required to attend religious services on Sunday. The teacher of Bible, who is also pastor of the student church, conducts the morn- ing service. This service is followed by the Sunday School presided over by one of the students. After the opening exercises the student body breaks up into classes taught by the different teachers. Probably the most interesting service of the day is the evening service conducted by the Christian Endeavor society. In this service every student is given an opportunity for self-expression. The Day begins with morning prayers at the breakfast table, and then during school week chapel services are held each day. These services are conducted by the president, or some other member of the faculty. In the senior year, each member of the class is required to conduct one chapel ser- v1ce. With the completion of our new Administration building, which contains Well equipped class rooms, and also our beautiful chapel, we feel that we are in aposition to do far more, for our students in a moral and spiritual way, than we have ever done. ,? iii' - l l V V P l li ll l ll ull I lil it l T ll li l .sms-.sms N . The course of study followed in our Sunday af- ternoon meetings has been in Dr. Vance's Love l Trails of the Long Ago, and the students have T found these old Bible love stories more inter- fl estinq and inspiring than a present day novel. fy We were most fortunate also to have sev- eral of our friends talk to us on various Sundays, A A among them: Dr. Borders, Mr. Saunders, Mr. ' Stanley Wilson. At the beginning of the year representatives of the two societies 'met and divided the new students. Then the fight Was on! The so- cieties gave programs alternately on Saturday evens ings each striving to give a better entertainment than the other. The programs were mostly of a humorous nature with a little seriousness mixed in and a good list of music produced by our gifted students All this provided a change and rest from the concentra- tion in the class room. The debating Club consi.ting of some ten mem- bers was organized in October Three of these were chosen to represent the School in the Missouri Debatg ing League. The question for the year wasi Re- solved: A Federal Department ,of Education should be created with a'Secretary in the President's Cabi- net. T Our team had the negative side of the debate and lost both to Crane and to Rogersville. Other de- bates among the students at various times Werejboth amusing and instructive. r T S j During the latter part of the year each Senior was required to lead chapel. A few of them had been 'in front of an audience before and took to the stage like a duck to water, but a majority of them had to brace themselves against the trusty radiator and force their husky voices to repeat the sentences they had written on the notes. However, some very good talks were given, which proves that their literary trainingvhere SCHOOL or TH OZARKS has not been in vain. r.., . is il sl 'fs-X s.'rw 1- Q- 1,f42k s +93 I A , , , f ! 11- -'J- .'2. i'Q:LgfxR .,, 6, ' , -1, 3:11 ,v .4f.m.,. -- -S-sssskxwg. .-, - . , A Q -- ' : ,QW ,, lrfli- , , -153 f' 'NZ , , ,,,- z ' 4? .. 1Y'l 'sm1:'-nr '- P: r..f:if1, 1 -' 1 - QPFFL --r -'-M - I ,. -2 ' I -,ali ' iq, I, ' -ff , C121 - , - -- --,ge - af - - 1fL':f. 1 ,zrfge-'fe-Qffrwl' .11:,12e11'i jffafirgsrm,--r-------fi'5'1 H: x, ' 21. Green Chapel, when the superb vose concert grand piano, the recent gift of Mr. Fred Jenkins of Kansas City, will be used. Beyond expression is our gratitude for Mr. Jenkins' Wonderful gift which will be an inspiration and an incentive for our best effort. Another event of importance will be our participation, for the first time, in the Music Festival, to be held soon in the Springfield Teacheris College, shared in by all first class high schools of south Western Missouri. We are most favored in being represented by Lois Morgan, our very talented and most advanced student in music. Through Lois We may confidently dream of trophies. I An interesting and instructive innovation has recently been inaug- uratedfthe music memory contest, fostered by Mrs. S. P. In w basket ball this was, no doubt, due to the new gymna- sium and also to the organization of the White River League, composed of Branson, Blue Eye, Forsyth, Hollister and The School of the Ozarks. We hoped to get in the new gymnasium early in the fall, but unavoidable-delays in building kept us out until after Christmas. We kept up our practice on the open court tho kept off most of the time by unfavorable weather. After Christmas we entered into our practices with more enthusiam than ever and our team, which had repeatedly lost to strong- er teams, began to make those teams in their return games take notice In our last game which was with Forsyth we trounced them soundly whereas earlier the reverse had been true. The tournament was held here in our new gymnasium and was a wonderful success. 'I ho we did not win the tour- nament cup our team made an excellenttshowing. Both games were lost by two points and to the two best teams in the tournancent. As for track it remains to be seen iust vihat will happen. We have excellent material on our team and we are coniident of winning the cup for the third time and thus obtain per- manent owner hip of it. The meet is set for M y 'Sth and our boys are working hard to get in shape. Much interest is also being shown in ba. eball this year too. A new diamond has been laid out sfuth of the new building and with many good iren out prospect are bright for a winning team. I Nevertheless whether we win or lose in our games whose purpose is to train us for the game of life may we remember this motto When the on, great Scarer comes to write against your name He writes not that you won or lost but how you played the game. GIRLS' BASKET BALL Much interest was shown in basket ball by the girls this year. Early in the fall, soon after the boys started practicing, a large number of girls began coming out to help make a team. After a slow start in the fall, things began to pick up with the opening of the new gymnasium, and with re- gular practice' our team began to show up much better. We gave teams that were conceded to be stronger, closer and closer battles. We Won from Blue Eye who had previously beaten us. Every one began to praise our team for the way they were coming out of their losing streak. In the tournament, we again won from Blue Eye and gave Hollister, the best team in this section, one real hot battle, whereas they had easily beaten us before. We can justly be proud of a team that can lose many games and still come out in the end and win against previous victors. It shows us they have the iight and will to win for The School of the Ozarks, in spite of any odds that might be against them. i A.,- - QQQZ.-:viii , gr - ...1., V.-, .M 1 -, LQ . 4,14 ff if 17' :spite --1 , ,bw Kg, ,J 33,11 1.35 J 4--' ' ... , --, 4 Q. These are the things that mar or bless The sum of human happiness. The things nearby, not things afar, Not what we seem, but what we are, These are the things that make or break, That give the heart its joy or ache. Not what seems fair, but what is true, Not what we dream, but what we do-- These are things that shine like gems, Like stars in fortune's diadems. Not as we take, but as we give, Not as we pray, but as we live. These are things that make for peace, Both now and after time shall cease. -Selected. 9 ms. ff s 's'X4 ,..,-Q., - ,A ff .... .---- - -,NX gs? 'Q-.sassy -N: ssfsr.
