A native of Belle Haven, Virginia, she graduated from Chestnut Hill School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has had wide experiences in nursing in the past and served as Directoress of Nursing here at our hospital. It is because of your patience, understanding, and interest in us that we, the class of 1970 proudly dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Smith. With love, The Class of 1970. Bessie B. Anderson Nurses ' School and Residence was erected in 1953. Since then, many happy hours have been spent within its walls, many lessons learned, many tears shed. We are proud of our home and will always have fond memories of the time spent here. ' s, A Tribute to the Nurse The Nurse” The world grows better, year by year Because some nurse in her little sphere Puts on her apron and smiles and sings, And keeps on doing the same old things, Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy mankind ' s numerous ills. Feeding the baby, answering the bells. Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home, and all the while Wearing the samie professional smile. Blessing the newborn babe ' s first breath Closing the eyes that are still in death. Taking the blame for many mistakes. Oh dearl What a lot of patience it takes; Going off duty at seven o ' clock, Tired, discouraged, and ready to drop. But called back on special at seven fifteen With woe in her heart which must not be seen. Morning and evening, noon and night, Just doing it over and hoping it ' s right. When we lay down our caps and cross the bar. Oh Lord, will you give us just one little star To wear in our crowns with the uniform new In that city above, where the head nurse is You? Each school of nursing has its’ own style of cap, which the nurse wears throughout her career. The famed British nurse, Florence Nightingale, carried a lamp on nightly visits to her patients; hence the lamp is also a proud symbol of nursing. We, as the Class of 1970, were very proud to receive our caps and will always try to wear them with dignity, mindful of the responsibility and position they represent. 30 c. onven tion Our own privite concert I ’’Well, Joe s Bar and a half down is only a mile the road l” Ya ll can stay here and play hairdresser all you want, I’m goin ' back to work !” ’’Where ' s the pool?” 31 Correct,,.Correct.,. On September 7, 1969, a group of girls, started a new career as students of nursing, at N.A.M. Practical Nursing School. As we looked around the first days, meeting each other, in the back of our minds...we wondered what the next year would bring. A little laughter, some crying and at times even a little cussing was involved I Mr. Cramer gave us a tour of the new Northampton- Accomack Memorial Hospital. Then...came the first class meeting and election of officers. In October, we had our first project(bingo party) to make money for the L.P.N. convention to be held in Hampton, on May 19th, It was time to settle down and about this time, and have plenty of classes and homework. As the months went by, we were experiencing new thrills. We as a class, found out we could sing as a group, when we entertained the R.N.’s at Christmas time, and our Christmas program was called ’’Space Christmas.” I believe every¬ body had a good time at that party, because then we had a vaca¬ tion until January 5th, and by this time, we needed it I Vacation was soon over and it was ready to settle down once more to work hard. January we started working in the hospital from 2 to . In January, we also received our nurses caps. Looking back, we remember some of the highlights of the year. Linda Wilson and Lea Parks got their engagement rings. We re¬ member Charlene B. one day was eating beri-beri I Also there was the time Cathy M. had to write a paper on ’’Why I was walking on the Roof l” We found out Ada C. couldn’t go on her vacation cause’ her dog needed an air-conditioner I Then, there’s that girl from N.C. Dusty W., who called O.B. instruments, ’’Toolsl” Cheryl E., Anna W. , and Shirley H. were wondering if they took those pills, or if there would be a new addition to their family’. Then... there’s the day Viola Harrison said she believed she was born breech, to be so mixed up’. We remember Ellen S.’s words such as: capillaries, allergies, and petchies I These are just a few highlights of the year. We’ve really had our share of laughs this past year ’. As August 28 approached, we looked forward to graduation. We will look back over the one year experience as students of nursing, with a tear in our eyes and look forward to the future and career as L.P.N.’s. We will also be saying R:ood-byes to our classmates...work and fun, and many, many memories, Shirley Herrin Class Historian 40 . .y duertisments Wards Garage Wrecker Ser ' ice Eastville, Va. 233U7 AW® B B Market Tip-Top Food Stores Fancy Meats Phone: OR8-5595 Eastville, Va.
