The 1976 Football season proved to be a long and sometimes frustrating one for the loyal squad mem- bers. It was a season that almost never was. Thanks to the efforts of several parents, ball players, and the coaching staff, enough money was raised to fund the '76 squad. Nevertheless, the squad tried its best and repre- sented Schoharie High School. Desire and pride were evident and, although there were no victories, it wasn't from a lack of trying. An exciting moment of the season came dur- ing a dow.n pour at Cobleskill Tech, as the nine man freshman team won a divisional trophy. Frosh MVP Tom Martinez ran second in that race. In the Schoharie County meet, the Indians put four runners in the top fifteen runners, two of them sophs and one freshman. ROW 1: Coach Rinaldi. ROW 2: S. Wright, A. Vroman, K. Hunziker, B. Smith, T. The outstanding defensive players were Sophomore Ellen Davis (goalie), and Senior Becky Smith. This year was the first time soccer sectionals were scheduled. Our last game against Greenville was the deciding factor for Schoharie to be able to go. A good effort was made, but the Indians were defeated. 104 Ann O'Sullivan Ginny Eaton Barb Courlis Becky Smith Terry Stimson 105 VoM’dy Bosk tbcM R. 1: D. Detweiler, R. Filmcr. W. Benninger, M. Coach McCarthy's squad finished with a league record of 10-2 and 15-5 overall. The team was paced by seniors Ron Filmer, Bill Benninger and Joe VanDerwerken and returning jun- iors Joe Uveges and Joe Best. The squad was led by co-captains Tim DeGroff and Mark Stanley. Tim graduated in mid-season and was unable to improve on his 14-1-1 record at 132 lbs. Mark finished as Section II. class C runner-up at 145 lbs. and recorded a 19-win season. Senior Alan Colby had a fine rookie year as he captured the Section II, Class C super-heavyweight title. ' Youth’ by Ocunuudl Youth is not a time of life it is a state of mind, a product of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity - an appetite for adventure. ’’ Nobody grows old by living a number of years. People grow old when they desert their ide- als. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, self-doubt, fear and anxiety - these are the culprits that bow the head and break the spirit. Whether 16 or 70, there exists in the heart of every person who loves life the thrill of a new challenge, the insatiable appetite for what is coming next. You are as young as your faith and as old as your doubts. ’ ’ So long as your heart receives from your head messages that reflect beauty, courage, joy and excitement, you are young. When your thinking becomes clouded with pessimism and pre- vents you from taking risks, then you are old - and may God have mercy on your soul. 144
