' TU Abbey’ CcWficWy, NJ.V. fl uchlS, 1976 6 Ai Yes, it was the month of September in the year of '63. We just entered the hallowed halls of what we would later call our school. My, we were all of five and getting up in the world! Get up in the morning with big brother and sister, have a free bus ride to school, only go for half a day, and still have the afternoon just for play! Daniel Babbitt Lorraine Balfe James Donald Bender Birch' 8 Lonne Blodgett What more could a person want? Then came first grade. We got to stay for a whole day! Wasn’t this a new thing! We got to see each other and talk and meet for an entire day, not just half of it. In second grade we would change classes more often. Now we went from class to class for our reading. We met other people and each Debra Scott Bunnell Burger Joyce Braman 9 Donna Clapper other and got to know others better. Little did we suspect that this idea of changing classes for subjects would eventually govern our every move in high school. Now that I think of it, I think the whole theory behind this class changing was to condition us for what was to come later. Sneaky lot, those second grade teachers, pulling a trick Glenn Cleveland 10 Brenda Egnor Diana Fagnani Thersa Fagnani Jane Engle Stephen Fagnani Mary Fancher like that. Third grade brought about more changes. We took trips and visited museums. By this time we were eight years old and growing. Most of us stood over four feet tall now! The year was 1967 and we were in fourth grade. My, how the time seemed to fly! All of us were now in the very end of the elementary building, almost near the gym and all those gigantic high school people! Just think, only nine more years of school work completed, and we would be at the top! It seemed like forever at the time. Fifth grade! Now we were in the high school building with all the other people. We played against each other in recess and started to form values and learn about the world as it affected us. The n Sheryl Filmer election for president was held and we discussed the various candidates and why we liked or disliked what they stood for. This year we got a chance to vote ourselves and elect who we thought would be the best possible person to represent us. (Maybe we'll elect the right person this time!) Sixth grade and they moved us again! Now we were put in the outhouses, better Nancy Gaige Crystal Fisher Kathy Garufi 12 m Dean Herrick known as the mobile classrooms. I think they were preparing our later life with all that moving from place to place. Then we hit the seventh grade, or rather, it hit us. Changing classes on every bell, males for teachers, and now we were considered a part of the high school. The high school! Yes, we started to call and regard it as ”our building and our” school. No longer David Hotaling William Bonnie Jacobsen Kane Shawn Hewett 13 Judith Karker David Keller Vicki Kearney Mary Kennedy w were we little kids. They were in the other” part of the school. September of 1972 brought us into the grade of eight. We all had to write about the histories of our families. (Some of us should have let things lie.) At this point we were developing theories and ideas about what we would be and what we would do. The next year, you see, we would Debra Langan Brian Largeteau Donald Largeateau Deborah Lauterbach be in high school for real, in word as well as in deed. Seventh and eighth grade also brought about the chance to become involved in clubs and extra- curricular activities for the first time in our school career. Most seventh graders were not allowed to join high school clubs, but we did have a Boy's Basketball team and an activity Michelle Livingston period. In eighth grade, we, for the first time, got to become the sole body of a school newspaper, The Arrowhead. It took a lot of work, but we always put out a monthly paper which was read by everyone from the principal down. It included cartoons, editorials, car news. Dear Crabby, right down to personal spotlights on both students and Paula Gene Mickel Murphy Timothy Mansheffer Doreen Meehan Mitchiko Nakamori 16 % teachers. It sold good and we were always proud of it. In the beginning of our high school years we started to plan for our future. There were all kinds of different occupations to choose from. So we had to take certain subjects or training to prepare ourselves for our favorite, future occupation. Now that we have had our training or knowledge we have to go Elaine Orcutt Jose Deborah Margaret Osario Ostermann Ostermann 17 Robert Renee Parslow Paul Tina Palmer out in the big world and put it to use. The ninth grade! We all could be in clubs and activities if we wanted; be active voices in what we thought ought to be done for and by us as students and future leaders. The activities were not limited now - just to our own school, though. Now we were involved with other schools from around the county and around the state. In actuality, 18 Karl Remmers Melissa Rivenburgh Patrick Pierce though, we were growing up. Dances were always fun to organize, like our Sadie Hawkins Dance. Everyone pitched in to set up cornstalks, hay bales, streamers, and all the other things which were scattered around the dance floor. It was a fun night with the bales breaking apart and the cornstalks falling over on top of loving couples. But there was laughter in the air and fun in 19 Susan Rose Martha Rowe everyone's heart. Yes, we were no longer children. The world was changing and we, as people and young adults were changing with it. You could see it, we could feel it, and everyone knew it. The whole attitude of what we as a class in tenth grade believed in was different from just a few years earlier. Things we had never questioned or believed or supported became reality, and Marianne Sacket Kathleen Santos Gregory Sagendorf Wayne Schell 20 with it came our awareness of just how much this very world affected us and would affect us in the future. This awareness became even more evident in the junior year. Some of us got jobs, got cars, and became involved with each other more, not just in the classroom, but also outside the room. Some of us had the experience of playing on a championship team or attending the Junior Prom. The class of '76 presented If” on May 10, 1975. This was an elegant night when everyone dressed up in suits and gowns. Definitely a night to be remembered. Of course, our Senior Ball will be important in our minds also. This took place on March 13, 1976 at The Patrick Schermerhorn Kevin Scofield Paul Schoenecker Jeffrey Seals 21 Thomas Seebold Donna Simmons Terri-Ann Melissa Brian Skinner Smida Smith Abbey Restaurant in Guilderland, with A Whiter Shade of Pale” as its theme. We seemed to accept and treat each other now as adults and expected others to do so also. We partied, we drank, we fooled around, we met more and more people whom we identified with and got to understand and talk to. This year, we are seniors. The graduation we will soon attend John Stoddard 22 James Stolberg Mark Stolzenburg Sylvia Swift means different things to different seniors. All of us have different ideas and different ways of applying what we believe in as we feel best. We each have and hold certain memories which, to us, are special. None of us can or could be expected to have all the same ideas of right and wrong, good and bad, or between beauty and ugliness. But, indeed, it is these Claire Trapp Rufis Varin 23 Cindy Dale Vedder Vogelien Kevin Walker Steven Walker Judy Scott Westfall Wheelock varieties, these differences, which makes us, the class of '76, a class unique. Our class has shown energetic participation in the field of fund raising events. With the guidance of good advisors, the class raised a sum of over $ in the years of 72 through 76. It was under the supervision of Mr. McCallister that the ball first started rolling. Throughout ninth and tenth grades, such events as numerous bake sales, Spaghetti and Pancake suppers, and the collossal containers sale placed the class of 1976 out in front in money raising. In eleventh grade, Mr. Brundage and Mrs. DeGroff took over. It was in this year that the class held the traditional magazine sale that every Junior class holds. We set a high goal; to sell two 24 Leslie Jeffrey Wilber Wilsey Cindy Wise Patricia Wishart Bruce Wolford thousand dollars worth of magazine subscriptions within a three week deadline. (Which by the way was one of the highest goals ever set!) We not only reached, but exceeded our goal. Thomas Woods 25 Kelly Teni Yanson Zwick With this money collected over the past three years, we were able to hold a beautiful and successful Junior Prom and Senior Ball. We were lucky as a class to have had so much luck in fund raising events. Proudly we can say that it was through the effort of the entire class of '76 that we, the class of '76, succeeded. Graduation - June 25, 1976! This date marks the finalization of thirteen years spent to achieve the very valued piece of paper known as a high school diploma. We've won the right to leave the place we've spent almost a third of our lives. This day means the end to some, a time to party for many, and just the beginning of life for the rest. This marks the date that our class will be together as a whole for the last time. As we march to the tune of POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, we may reflect back to the memories, friendships, laughs, tears, and hopefully knowledge we have obtained from these past thirteen years. It is a day of relief, knowing that tomorrow we will face the world where the certainties that we experienced in high school are few. We can only hope that these years of school have prepared us for a future of happiness and success. After this day, we will be the outsiders and only have the memories of the Class of 1976 to link us with Schoharie Central School. I, Judy Westfall, will to all my friends and family, a great Big Thank you!'' To Jim, I will all my love and a life of happiness together. I, Scott Wheelock, will to anyone in the Junior Class who can find the bottle of gin in the boysroom, you’ll win a bottle. I, Leslie Wilber, will to visit Mr. B. as often as possible. And will to anyone the chance to sleep in class as I did. I, Jeff Wilsey, will to Mr. Rickard, one giant computer; to John, Chris, Allen, and Jack all the food they can eat; to Mike, Pat, and Jim, all the fun we’ve had; and to Cindy, just plain good luck. I, Cindy Wise, will to Pat, a dependable car; to Patty, thanks for listening and may dreams become realities; to Kolin, all the love, luck and happiness he can possibly fit into his senior year and the years to come. I, Patty Wishart, will to my good friend Pat, the best of luck with the limousine in hopes that it doesn't break down on a back road; and to Cindy, the best of luck always with, her guy. I, Kelly K. Yanson, will to Cheryl, a friend in case she finds the need for one. To Merse, an artist going insane, and apartment. To my social group, Thanks for the memories. ’’ I, Terri Zwick, will to my sisters, all the happiness they can find. To all my special friends, thanks for all the memories; to Sandy, a better love life; to my brother A1 - a permanent job, and a special person to fulfill his life; and to Woody, all my love for as long as he wants me. 48 dm, 4 1977 ROW 1: C. Mrs. Gallup was bom in Holland and moved to the United States during her childhood. She is a graduate of Cortland State and has done graduate study at Albany State, Russell Sage College, Oneonta St. and St. Rose. She came to Schoharie to teach in 1947 and taught previously in Altamont. Many of us remember the exciting kindergarten classes we had with Mrs. Gallup and having her for a friend as well as a teacher. Mrs. Gallup and her husband Gil reside in Altamont. 79 Rflictuj Qtud cb I had a chance to come to the United States as an exchange student for Rotary. The way people live, school life and of course, the language; everything was different from what I used to do in Japan. I learned to know so many things with my American family and at S.C.S. I'm happy I spent this year as one of the students of S.C.S. This year in the U.S. will not be my school year in Japan at all - But I’m sure it will be the greatest year of my life. There are many many lovely people that I can never forget. Best wishes to my host families and friends. I would love to come back to the U. S. A. and see you again! The club had a great defense, allowing only 44.8 points per game while scoring at a 58.5 clip. Leading scorer Bill Benninger (17.0) and Keith Egnor (10.0) who also led in rebounds should help out the varsity next year. The team played with total team effort. 124 JuaXo BasketbcM ROW 1: B. The highlights of the concert included a performance by the Koinonia Cantorum, a local singing group and the presentation of a Yamaha grand piano to the student body by the choir. The piano is being paid for entirely by funds raised by the musical organizations. On April 3 and 4, the choir and orchestra presented the very popular musical Oklahoma! by Rogers and Hammerstein. The production was under the direction of music department chairperson, Mrs. Frances Tripp with the orchestra being conducted by band directors Marvin Goldstein and Wayne Linderman. Mrs. Betsy Guernsey was in charge of the scenery and set construction. The Dream Sequence of the musical was performed by Liz Martinez, Sue Wright, Pam Maack, Heidi Weaver and Pam Roberts. The Kid who can't read adequately for his age Stands naked before the world. However brave his front, his self-image drops. He hates school, with reason. His comprehension Narrows to impressions, half-truths and Whatever is fed to his senses at any given moment. Eventually, he tends to develop a bumper-sticker Mentality, limited to simplistics and thus, A sucker for demagoguery and whatever appeals to his rage. That way democracy and freedom die. But to live one day is to live for eternity, fore and alas tomorrow will never come and yesterday is but a past experience meant only for those that live in the afterlight of a new day. Living in the light of the day will bring forth happiness. Happiness, the essence of all that is not sorrow. Happiness cannot exist without sorrow. To point out the way of happiness, is without sorrow. When only sorrow can exist with the absence of happiness, sorrow is the color of stone; the color grey, black and blue all being cold and hard. Being cold and hard is not being able to feel the sun's golden ray as it peeks above mountain tops looking into the valley of death. There it will fear not death but walk amoungst cool clear water watching small minnows jump and swim like little dashes of dark and speedy astroids flying through the voids of all eternity.
