FDREVVD FID In this book the reader sees the young men of SCHOFIELD as they take their ship through her second tour on one of our Nation's far flung ramparts. Beneath their seemingly lighthearted smiles is a quiet, dedicated competence which produces a ship ready to fully play it's role in carrying out the Nation's policies in distant waters. The individual burden of sometimes long, arduous hours, of aching loneliness, of angering frustrations, of wet and cold weather is made easier by one's shipmates. Here you, the reader, see those shipmates at work afloat, as representatives of young America ashore, sharing one another's labors, enjoying the beauty of sunset at sea, or the pleasure of a shipmate's company, relaxing both afloat and ashore. As this cruise ends, some take SCHOFIELD into a well deserved overhaul, as some move on to new duty assignments, and yet others leave the service of our country, to each of SCHOFlELD'S Yankee Sailors, collectively and individually, l express my pleasure, pride and gratitude for having been included in their number these many months. ln whatever his post-cruise endeavors might be, may each SCHOFIELD sailor be blessed with fair winds and following seas. F. S. CONLON COIVIIVIANDING OFFICER . 2 -J'
