Beneath their seemingly lighthearted smiles is a quiet, dedicated competence which produces a ship ready to fully play it's role in carrying out the Nation's policies in distant waters. The individual burden of sometimes long, arduous hours, of aching loneliness, of angering frustrations, of wet and cold weather is made easier by one's shipmates. Here you, the reader, see those shipmates at work afloat, as representatives of young America ashore, sharing one another's labors, enjoying the beauty of sunset at sea, or the pleasure of a shipmate's company, relaxing both afloat and ashore. As this cruise ends, some take SCHOFIELD into a well deserved overhaul, as some move on to new duty assignments, and yet others leave the service of our country, to each of SCHOFlELD'S Yankee Sailors, collectively and individually, l express my pleasure, pride and gratitude for having been included in their number these many months. ln whatever his post-cruise endeavors might be, may each SCHOFIELD sailor be blessed with fair winds and following seas. Nonetheless, as vve approach the half way point in this deployment, I thought l should tell you that a remarkable thing is happening among the Black Knights of HS-4. To a man, every pilot and aircrevvman in this squadron has developed a strong personal feeling of respect and affection for your ship and crevv. This is based on SCHOFlELD's consistently outstanding performance of all evolutions in vvhich vve participate together. I am most pleased to say that my personalopinion is in complete agreement vvith those of my other flight personnel. The factors vvhich have led to this opinion are: 1. Consistent excellence in your performance of Anti-Submarine Air Control of our helicopters - our pilots feel safe under the expert control of your ASAC's. 2. Your superior performance during evolutions that require us to come aboard for in-flight refueling and transfer of personnel or cargo - your deck crew is the most efficient vve have seen. In the vvords of one senior pilot, 'SCHOFIELD can do more vvith eight men than the others can do with sixteen. 3. Your quick response to HlFR!transfer requests at any time - the elapsed time from initial call to Green Deck is alvvays the least with SCHOFIELD, and the deck is alvvays ready: clean, cleared of excess personnel, and with correct relative winds provided. 4. Your concern for the well-being of the helicopter crew - our aircrews actively compete for the privilege of coming to SCHOFIELD on a utility run, and will always choose SCHOFIELD if available for refueling in the middle of a long flight. lVlore than any other single thing, the truly outstanding box lunches and jugs of liquid refreshment have endeared your ship to us. We in HS-4 hope that our squadron plaque can be appropriately displayed aboard SCHOFIELD, and that it will in a small way serve as a token of our deeply felt appreciation of the continued outstanding performance and service of SCHOFIE LD. Very respectfully, Warren E. AUT Commander, U.S. Navy M Y r Q ,, SUNDA STFIAIT Crew, man the rails during memorial ceremonies in the Java Sea commemorating the sinking of the USS HOUSTON and the HIVIAS PE RTH. The two Cruisers had been sunk on February 28, 1942, not far from the location of the ceremony. The ships taking part in the ceremony are part of Antisubmarine Warfare Group Three attached to the U.S. Seventh Fleet. They are formed up in the shape of a cross and are lfrom left to rightl: the USS BRONSTEIN lDE-1037l, USS IVIEYERKORD l DE-1058l, USS TICONDEROGA lCVS-l4l, USS SCHOFIELD lDEG-3l and USS JOHN S. IVICCAIN lDDG-36l. Rear Admiral James C. Longino, Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Group Three, opened the ceremony with a narrative of the Sunda Strait Battle which was an honor salute by the lVIarine Honor guard. A red, white and blue wreath was then dropped from a helicopter as Taps was played. , 1 ,. , -I V1.3 .., I A I in - f - Y lv Q-M 1----1--X'.-V-www.,-A.-2 HV- 4..--r...M.,,,:.,.l, ',....-wr-..f.14.m-,--7, .-T,,..,,, ,,,,....-,.,.. , , W .,,. . . , 4 P I L ,, 'f , .1 4 i ,g . ggi!
