Dedication ln the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty eight, Pius XII was born unto eternal life. ln pursuit of peace during his pontificatc, Pius demonstrated an extraordinary aware- ness of current political activity tempered by an intense spiritual sensitivity. leislife was distinguished by courageous constancy, diligence in prayer, and consciousness of his obligations to mankind. We, who dedicate this book, pray that his soul, which suffered such great pain, may now rcjoivein thesuffused iight ot the Beatific Vision. We desire to share in the clair- voyance of his illuminated intellect, to imitate the austerity of his ascetic life, to sus- tain the zeal of his filial devotion to the Mother of God. May we who honor the memory ofPius XII repeat the words which suggest the purpose of his life: Lady, that we too might love thy Son above all things.
