S58 3 mam :ir Dedication ln the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty eight, Pius XII was born unto eternal life. ln pursuit of peace during his pontificatc, Pius demonstrated an extraordinary aware- ness of current political activity tempered by an intense spiritual sensitivity. leislife was distinguished by courageous constancy, diligence in prayer, and consciousness of his obligations to mankind. We, who dedicate this book, pray that his soul, which suffered such great pain, may now rcjoivein thesuffused iight ot the Beatific Vision. We desire to share in the clair- voyance of his illuminated intellect, to imitate the austerity of his ascetic life, to sus- tain the zeal of his filial devotion to the Mother of God. May we who honor the memory ofPius XII repeat the words which suggest the purpose of his life: Lady, that we too might love thy Son above all things. ,rf uw- f itil Q 5 'PT 'av 4 4 , . had 'A A Y . . u 'ug ,n 4 5-! 1 2. Each hill climbed becomes a lookout for more distant hills. nl The child learns to add and subtract to the end that the man may harness the forces of nature. Learning the al- phabet is but a preliminary to the mastery of philosophy. Recognizing a noun is preparation for conversation in the languages of Europe or the Orient. The challenge of education is constant and unending. ln life, it is inevitable that you can do only a few things extraordinarily well. For the rest, it will be enough that in all things you gave the best you had. This age of stainless steel and deep-freeze units and jet pro- pulsion may tempt us to measure success with a yardstick. But to do so would be as foolish as to try measuring love with a slide rule or weighing happiness in a scale. Success, enduring success, is a compound of service and justice and courage and charity, of sacrifice and reverence. It eludes and evades until the hour in which Christ, our brother, takes our hand in His and we feel the pulse of that power which guides whirling planets and draws from stars the light to glorify His Name. The cry of success is the song of the psalmist: UI rejoiced, because they said to me: 'vb shall go into the house of the Lord.'H May God bless you and keep you.
