THE HILLTOPPERS F ootball-1 949 The Schlarman Hilltoppers opened their fourth and most successful gridiron season on Sept. 18 when they trav- eled to Bloomington at Wesleyan Memorial Stadium to tangle with the Trinity Saints. This game ended in a 6-0 defeat for the Hilltoppers. The next week the Schlarmanites dedicated Drummy Field and played hosts to the Mar- quette Crusaders from Ottawa. The Toppers were defeated 18-7. The tables turned with the next encounter on Oct. 1 as the Hilltoppers defeated Saybrook 34-0. On Oct. 8 Catlin met the up-and-coming Schlarman Eleven on Drummy Field. The game ended in a 30-0 victory for Schlarman. The next encounter was with the much favored Urbana Eleven of the Big Twelve Conference. The Hilltoppers came out ahead with a 12-6 victory. This was the third victory for the Gold and Blue of Schlarman High. The'Toppers then traveled to Decatur on Oct. 21 to meet the St. Theresa Bulldogs in their homecoming game. The final score of this game was 21 to 7 in favor of St. Theresa. On Oct. 28 the Schlarman crew traveled to Paris to defeat the favored Paris Tigers 14-0. The final contest of the sea- son pitted the Schlarmanites against the Westville Tigers in the first Schlarman Homecoming game. 'The Hilltop- pers suffered a 13-7 defeat in this battle. Thus the '49 campaign ended with four wins and four losses.
