Elizabeth Mallck When her colleagues remember Eltzabeth Maluck they do not thunk of her as prestdmg over faculty meetungs nor as chalrman of the Engllsh Department although she was an able administrator We thunk of her smllnng a welcome to us as she sat behund the desk un T02 The best possible way to begun the day was to drop In for a few minutes chat No matter how gloomy the outlook nor how Intense the dissatisfaction Elizabeth Maltck could give tt a twust that sparked our laughter She was no Pollyanna Often her wut was sharp but never was ut butter Our grtpes were her gripes but she had such a keen sense of the rudlculous that she made us laugh tn solte of ourselves What she contrnbuted to the students who sat In her classes can never be measured lust as It can never be measured for any fine teacher She loved Englush V Those who had the good fortune to have her for that semester were tralned In the dnsclpllnes of wrttlng and speakmg with an exactness for which they will be grateful all thelr llves Expert equally tn the science of Grammar and In the science of good form In polite soctety she put the Seniors through their paces so that no graduate need suffer embarrassment when he faced the world There was buoyancy IH her teachmg a gleam of understandung humor and a fine conslderatlon for the personal dlgnuty of her students that made her falrness and find therein a security much needed In these uncertain times Teachers and students who were prlvlledged to know her outside her pro fessuonal settung found her a gay and charming companion The broad scope of her actnvttnes enrlched her teachmg It was a delight to spend an hour with her tn her home to wander with her through her garden to engoy good talk and the warm assurance that you were the most welcome of guests Her acttvnty un her Church the Church dlnners she arranged the meetungs she held the phllan throptc endeavors she helped to organize and carry through made her a vital part of her community She had a ready eloquence a gnft for anecdote a bal anced ludgment and common sense that made her a speaker much tn demand Underlytng all was the stncere Chrlsttan womanhood that gave these professions of her love for her fellowman meanlnq and purpose Some people are remembered for what they accompllsh While few teachers accomplish as much as Elizabeth Mallck It IS the person she was that will be our unforgettable memory Few people lead so full a lufe Even fewer have been blessed with the galety of sptrlt the keen Intellect and the hugh Ideals of this fine woman We who love her are consoled that there can never be any dlmtnu tton of those powers Che has become part of us and part of the Schenley Hugh School of which she was so proud Loretta P Byrne 5 . . , I . . , f . . , , - I , . , ' 1 classes a good place to be.
