Wi Q Ft. 3 forewvrd The theme of our Schenley T955 Journal is a modern Poor Richard's Almanac. Although this almanac was written by Benjamin Franklin the sayings which it consists of were not orig- inally his. These proverbs were the wisdom of many ages and nations which he assembled and formed into a connected dis- course. In his almanac Mr. Franklin began with the phrase Poor Richard says, as if he were quoting from Richard Saunders, fhis pen namel thus the almanac received its name. Many people have said that it is the storehouse of Beniamin Franklin's wit, wisdom, and practical information. Not only were these proverbs used in the days of Mr. Franklin, but as you turn the pages of this book you may realize that you have also said or heard the same expressions many times in our own mod- ern English. They do not only deal with the years T733 to 'l757, a period of twenty-five years, which Mr. Franklin spent compos- ing and polishing his work, but they are very true to this day. When Poor Richard's Almanac was completed it was copied in all of the newspapers over the continent. It was written in several languages and hung above the fireplaces in homes all over the world. It is believed to have had a great deal of in- fluence upon the economic conditions of this time and for several years to follow. After reading the almanac, people were dis- couraged with useless spending and therefore became much more thrifty and money conscious. Mr. Franklin wrote well quoted lines such as: Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise, God helps them that help themselves, Keep thy shop and thy shop will keep thee, Diligence is the Mother of Good Luck, and many others that are familiar to our ear and probably will be heard by many other students for years to come. 4
