During his years in the classroom, he proved himself so able an instructor and so sympathetic with the problems of his stu- dents that the Administration named him vocational counselor in 1928. During this era, Schenleyls enrollment was at its peak, 3,000 students. His efficiency as counselor made his appointment to the position of vice principal a cause for general rejoicing. During his administration of this very difficult office, he Won the affection and admiration of both teachers and stu- dents. All who came in contact with him were impressed hy his high sense of justice, his personal integrity, and his Wisdom. Some of the eminent leaders from business, scientific, medical and athletic Helds were present and gaily rem- inisced with their classmates. Among the promi- nent members was present Mr. S. R. Goodman, class president. He is now president of the American Federation of Musicians. Acting as toastmaster for the gala affair, he presented to the class those members who had achieved fame in their own right as a result of their undertak- ings. The banquet was prepared by Stiakakis and Marinakos, owners of the Gourmet Restau- rant. From the medical profession and allied fields were introduced three alumni. Marvin Dashef- sky, former school president, is now head pharm- acist for Sun Drug. james Parreco is a world renowned pathologist. Both of these gentlemen gave short talks expressing joy over meeting old friends. Also presented was Evelyn jean Alex- ander, U. S. Public Health dietitian, who deliver- ed a short synopsis of her activities. Representative of the athletes of the class was head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, john Cenci, who, having just completed a winning season with the National Football League cham- pionship, commented briefly on the possibilities of repeating the successes next year and highly commended some of this yearis stalwart players, among whom were: Bill McLaughlin, big jimmy Tavernise, Ken Hawthorne, johnny Barrett, Al Burkhart and Jimmy Brooks. Engaged in an- other Held of sports was Morris Simon, who jetted in from London after decisively copping the world's light-heavyweight lifting champion- ship for the U. S. He was literally breathless and could not speak. Screen star Pat Krushinski, currently ap- pearing in g'Sin,,, filmed by Frank Freedel at Stromboli Studios, represented the perfect stim- ulant for the men as she reenacted a passionate scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Iuliet. Her capable partner was Robert Sciulli, who now doubles as her business manager. Much interest was 'then centered on Herb Ruder, famed syndicated news analyst, and Bev Dugan, Hollywood gossip editor. Both related exciting sidelights of their many printed news headlines, tales that captured the interest of the entire group. When toastmaster Goodman invited Aubrey George and Sam Silberman, co-designers of Pitts- burghis own subway, to the floor, each professed his sincere wishes for the continued success of classmates. At this point the class was treated to an in- terlude of enthralling piano virtuosity by jacque- line Gibbons, world-famed artist of the keyboard, She displayed remarkable finger co-ordination as she gave her rendition of the difficult Tchaikow- sky fifth concerto in B flat. After this pleasant break the speeches were continued. The speakers included such notables as Phillip Freidman, U. S. tax attorney, and his chief statistician, Ben Forman. Both reiterated the enthusiastic words of the preceding speakers concerning the gathering. The arts were quite capably represented as Herman Fabian, famous American sculptor, and Laverne Quatse, noted painter, unveiled for the first time their latest productions. Last but not least were Phyllis Conrad, who is, at present, head of Schenleyis English depart- ment, and Rae Freidkin, Schenley Home Eco- nomics teacher, both of whom spoke words of greetings. The group then adjourned to the immense ballroom where the Thomas quintet presided, having flown in from New Yorkis Copacabana. Its members include Harvey Hill, George Bacasa, Clarence Carr, Henry Adams, and band leader Ronald Thomas, who personally thrilled the crowd by playing five different instruments. Finally, each bade farewell to his neighbor and departed, pleasantly anticipating another such reunion. Class Will VVe, the February, 1952 class of Schenley High School, in the State of Pennsyl- vania, County of Allegheny, City of Pittsburgh, being of stable mind and charac- ter, publish and ordain this to be our Last Will and Testament: Firstly: VVe make no special stipulations as to the funeral. However, we instruct the 12B class to uphold and to praise us, dispensing with any grouches against us. Being of such outstanding quality, leaving such a huge va- cancy in the school, we propose that a new Held house be named in our honor. Secondly: We bequeath to our chief heir, none other than the 12B,s, our chief virtues and properties: vast knowledge, inimitable per- sonality, ego, and above all, self-discipline. Thirdly: We propose that our miscellaneous school equipment, papers, and pencils be given the 12B,s, provided they pay all our just debts. KUI5 Q. gsm Q Il Il ff .was Fourthly: WVe leave to the junior class the ques- tions and answers to all tests, and above all, twelfth grade theme. Fifthly: We bequeath to the Sophomores our patience and tact. Remember that haste makes waste and that two years is not such a long, long time. Sixthly: To the bewitched and bewildered fresh- men whose anxiety and fear was once experi- enced by us, we leave a book describing the Vices of Schenleyf, The content of which contains the do,s and don,t's,,l the road map of Schenley, and the secret information about different teachers. Seventhly: Besides these humble bequests, we give our deepest regards to those who gra- ciously receive them. Eighthly: We hereby appoint T. H. Kirkpatrick, guardian of the senior class, executor of this last will and testament. In witness thereof, we have herewith sub- scribed our name and seal this ninth day of january, 1952. Munhall Came Schenley opened its 1951 football season with an exhibition contest against powerful Mun- hall, and was defeated decisively by the score of 25-0. Throughout the game Munhall was in complete control and halted any drive that the Bellefielders could muster. Only the sensational passing of Andrew Lecce provided consolation for Schenley fans. He reeled off several yard- gaining passes. The Munhall Indians', scored their first touchdown early in the game and later added three more and an extra point to total their twenty-five points. The 'clayhawksv showed amazing strength as they scored in every quarter of the contest. The Belle- fielders were completely stopped by their staunch defense until the final quarter when Schenley put together a drive to Ieannetteis three yard line. Conncllsville Came The Belleiielders' third exhibition contest of the season was as unsuccessful as the first two, for Schenley went down to defeat at the hands of a strong, but under-rated Connellsyille eleven by the score of 21-0. The Connellsyille uCokersv thoroughly outclassed Schenley while their half- back, Ray Gilpin, was scoring all three of his teamis touchdowns. Everyone of Schenleyis scor- ing attempts was thwarted by excellent defense work on Connellsvilleis part and the Bellefielders were constantly bottled up in their own territory. South Came Schenley opened its city league campaign with a decisive 18-7 win over the weak South Orioles. The Bellefielders completely dominated the game and were never behind on scoring. Schenleyis Hrst touchdown came in the opening quarter on a 5 yard, Lecce to Terry, pass. A five yard touch- down run hy Kims gave the Crossmen a 12-0 lead at halftime. South scored its only touch- down in the fourth quarter, but Schenley also tallied on a 11 yard run bv Trapini to insure the victory. Peahody Came Peabody avenged last vearis defeat bv Schenley 38-0 victory over the Bellefielders in the Red and Blackis second City League game. The first half of the game was so close that the winner was not decided until mid-way in the third quarter when the Schenley defense fell apart. Peabodyis quarterback, Pete N eeft, turned the tables against Schenley, throwing several successful passes which accounted for most of his teamis yardage and points. Alderdice Game The Alderdice game proved to be Schenleyis greatest disappointment, as the highly favored Bellefielders were upset 7-6. The first quarter was evenly played for Schenleyis defense was impenetrable. Alderdiceis only touchdown came in the second quarter, and the 'iDragonsv enjoyed a 7-O lead at half-time. In the third quarter, Schenley struck back as Trapani scored the Belle- fielderis onlv touchdown. The Red and Black, however. missed the attempted extra point. The fourth quarter showed no scoring, and Schenley went down to defeat. CIIEERLEADERS: Nlr. May, Sponsor, il. Gibbons, Capt.g L. Al. Boswell, ll. Dc-Shantz, S. Diulus, B. Dugan, L. jordan, J. After two quarters. the score stood 2-O in favor of South Hills as the result of a safety. The Bellefielders struck in the third quarter when their offensive star, Kims. scored after a fifty-one drive by Schenley. Two plays later, Terry scoredg and Miller added the Red and Blackis Hnal touchdown. On the final play of the game, South tallied a lone touchdown, bringing the score to 19-9. Westinghouse Game Schenleyis last City League contest was played against VVestinghouse, the eventual Citv Championg and the Bellefielders were beaten by the score of 41-7. The Bulldogs fought terrifical- ly, unrelentless in their charging, and scored in every quarter of the game. Schenley was trailing 41-0 before scoring its touchdown late in the contest when Chappie Hill went over on an end run from the two yard line. The attempt for the extra point was successful. and the Red and Black brought the score to read 41-7. l952 Football Schedule September 12 19 26 October 9 17 24 Sl November 7 Latrobe, HXVQIV Ieannctte, away Connellsville, away Peabody, away XVestinghouse, home South Hills, away Allderdice. away South, home 73 Skip Monsein, all-American lmcli-strolwr wlio was tliircl in state lust year, is sccoml in tht- city, losing only to Al XViggins in dual nwvts :luring tlic- lust two yvurs. -. a-3 1: Q r.
