To the Graduates of 1950- The true test of civilization is not the census, nor' the size of cities, not the crops-no, but the kind of man the country turns out. Change the word country to school in this quotation from Emerson's CIVILIZATION and the sentence has profound significance for youth. During the first half of this century, the objectives of public education have become broader and more liberal. Educators know that our youth must be armed with the weapons of Worthy citizenship-loyalty, morality, tolerance, industry-if they are to survive the tyrannies of Twentieth Century nihilism. The schools are dedicated to the principles of democracy. The schools are dedicated to you-the youth of our land. We are proud of you. We trust you. You are our future. We Wish you well.
