THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A LEAD PENCIL I was born m a large factory wlth my many brothers and slsters We were all very much allke bemg very bnghtly pamted My color was a brllllant red I had shmmg gold letters on my left side and a round white cap on my head I can remember very llttle about my early lnfe as naturally I was very young I do remember though the day I was purchased by a young lady ln a flve and ten cent store She was very careful about my appearance the flrst few weeks I was wlth her but after this I was treated like all the rest of my kind I was sharpened ln a school pencil sharpener and I was very proud of my fme new pomt I was kept ln a brown leather contamer that was made for my use and others luke me I made the acquamtance of a green pen She was very lovely and she had golden halr made quxte a lot of noxse when she was used But once her wlg was changed she had a clear soft vonce I llved wlth my beautlful friend untrl the day my careless young mls tress left me on a classroom desk Soon aft erward a rushlng pupll kmcked me off I was plcked up wlthln a few hours by a person BELIEVE Henry Blrd says that he was born and fetched up m Minnesota untll 5 years ago when he had the misfortune to come to Schenectady Believe lt or not Florence Turnbull and Charlotte Tripp are cousms Norman Baugh spent the summer of l930 ln Sweden Mary Elxzabeth Potter had her plcture m the paper when she was a baby as Schenec tady s Prettlest IT who cared even less about my appearance than my former owner My white cap was soon dlrtled and torn Then my body was cut and bruised by my owner s teeth I was greatly ashamed to be seen ln publlc now but my good fortune kept me out of the social llmellght I was tucked mto a pocket and kept there for a long time One day I sllpped out and fell mto a deep snowbank I-Iere I was imbedded untll the flrst thaw where I floated away on a mlnxa ture rlver I was plckecl up by a hungry dog who found me medrble But nevertheless I was carried home agaln I was rescued by a small boy who found I made mce black markmgs on the sidewalk Thls was the last tlme I was ever used I was belng rudely jammed mto a small pocket and tlghtly stowed away for what seemed weeks I fell between the cushions of a soft couch I gradually fell deeper mto the stuffmgs until I met and got acqualnted wlth an aged penny I-Ie tells me the many happenings of his llfe and I relate to hlm my adventures as I have to you JANICE THEARLE OR NOT Douglas Beers xs eleven generatnons re moved from Roger Williams mlnlster It doesn t run rn the family Everett Badger slngs soprano m a church cholr Ruth DICICIDSOH was nearly blmd when she was a child Lorrame Mershon cllmbed Mount Marcy at the age of I0 Mlldred Morrell was once a redhead I-Ielene I-Iandelman was born 1n Omaha Nebraska Jean Bryson was born rn Scotland oan Conway IS a HOOSICI' from Incllana My only objection was that this young miss - .
