With a large contingent of seniors the team achieved its first winning season in four years. The team also reached the Sectional Playoffs. Coach Bouck felt that this was the best team that he ever coached. And rightly so. with a lot of upcoming young players, the Sabres will be trying to build an even better team for the future. 26 This year was only Schalmont’s second year in interscholastic golf, but it was a very good year. Lead by returning starters Gerry Green and Ran- dy Croote. the team recorded 3 wins and 5 losses which earned them third place in the Colonial Council. And if that wasn't enough, they very narrowly missed third place in the Sectionals. We're looking forward to even a better season next year. 28 JUDO Judo, a way of life? UGH!! I guess not. We learned a lot from our Sensai (Mr. Zentz): such as how to choke your opponent or throw him so he breaks his back or arm. It even turned out better as we went along. We were beginning to understand what we were doing and eventually learned how to pro- nounce all the fancy names that Sensai gave to those throws. Onward to competi- tion which is being planned by our Sensai. We hope to challenge Niskayuna and possi- bly other high schools and show the world our newly gained knowledge. BEWARE FACULTY!! SOFTBALL The girls softball team had an average season this year. They ended with a 2-3 rec- ord which was good considering it was their first year in interscholastic competition. The team was dominated by the hard hit- ting juniors and with most of the team re- turning for the next season we re SURE to have a winner! 30 The girls' track team this sea- son. under the great coaching of Miss Meader and Miss Suits, final- ly achieved their goal: to bring home a trophy. Even though it was a second place trophy, it meant a lot to the girls to have come in second at the Ravena Invitational, in which seven other schools participated. This trophy is the first trophy ever to be brought home by a girls' team. Next season the track team hopes to continue its tradi- tion by bringing home another. 32 33 This year’s track team was one of the best in Schalmont's history. Labeled young and building at the beginning of the season, the team swept the Council for a 7-0 record for 1st place. The overall record was 11-2 which brings Coach Barnell's four-year record to 57-6-2. The team also won the Rotter- dam Invitational Meet, and was 2nd in the Colonial Council Meet, the Sectionals and the Lansingburgh Rotary Meet, in which 10 teams were represented. One of the team's outstanding athletes was Eric Stuart, who broke the school record with a 4:19 and represented section 2 in the state meet. Eric is returning next year along with 10 other seniors, making the future very bright. 34 35 36 Last June, 14 Schalmont runners participated in a 24 hour marathon relay for the U.S. Olympic Team. They each ended up running about 23 miles. After the 24 hours were up, they found they had given more than just a donation to the team. They had given 14 sets of tight muscles, numerous gallons of Gatorade, and a few pair of worn out sneakers. Completing the marathon, though, made it all worth it. 38 TENNIS The 1972 tennis team was a young, improving team gathering strength each year. More stu- dents are taking an interest in the sport, which means more are coming out for the team. The team was an even 4-4 in the Council, but when they tried to take on the larger and more power- ful class A teams, they did not fare as well. Brian Eis and Dave Bonthron teamed up to take 2nd in the Colonial Council Tournament. This same pair represented the class B schools in the Sectional Tourney. Next year's team proves to be even bet- ter as the team lost only one player. Coach Stop- nytsky is confident that his team will be very competitive. 39 Winning seasons have be- come a habit with Schalmont's soccer teams, and this year was no exception for Coach Auchempaugh's Sabres. After getting off to a slow start. Schalmont rocketed back to a final 11 — 4 — 1 season, and at one time had an eight game winning streak. The Sabres went all the way in the Section- als. only to be tied by and then defeated by the same team we defeated last year. It was a good season, and we have even higher hopes for next year. 40 i-v soccer team first row: mark palmer, dan provost, Steve leakfeldt. dave potter, mike scardtno. ron casso. Schalmont s other soccer coach. Mr. Zentz, must be teaching his J.V. players judo or something. Whatever it is. it’s vvorking because the J.V. soccer team recorded another fantastic year at 12-1-1. This team broke every scoring record in Schalmont's history. In all. 16 records were broken. These were led by Ian Bonthron s record of 25 goals and 12 assists for a total of 62 points. Two other players, the co- captains Jim Leggiero and Steve Birnbaum. scored more than 10 goals on the year. The team scoring record was also broken with a total of 59 goals scored for the team and only 11 against, and ended up with a record 4.2 goals per game average. Frosh Nick Tripoli recorded the first J.V. Hat Trick ever, and this was repeated by Jim Leggiero and twice by Ian Bonthron. Ian also had the first 4 goal game ever. At the end of the year the team elected Ian and Frosh Dan Provost the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively. The team is los- ings starters. 14 players in all. but is looking forward to another good season next year. 42 GIRL’S SOCCER The girls' soccer teams performed well this year. The varsity team was boosted to a 3-2-1 record behind the strength of the returning se- niors. These seniors have had three years of ex- perience on the varsity team. The junior varsity team, though young and inexperienced, was filled with determination. This determination should help them develop into a strongteam next year. As the saying goes. Schalmont has never been, and never will be beaten by the same team twice. And. by this year's results, the team's record is still intact. With the J.V. players gaining experience this year, the outlook for next year remains bright. Great expectations season of tough breaks unforgettable tie against Cohoes Pep Rally before Draper game Kent Gray comes back as a coach Sab DeCesare Mark Gregson and Rit Kranick co-capts Russ Collett and Joe D'Alessandro most valuable players Rick Guidarelli all council second team Russ Collett all council second team Rick Croote all council second team If the freshman football team is any indication of the future, it won't be long until Schalmont has a winning varsity team. The team's overall record was 5-2. with a Council record of 4-2. good enough for 2nd place. With all players mov- ing up. the outlook for next year's J.V. team is good. 48 “VARSIT L BASKETBALL” This year’s Super Sabres team was much better than their record indicates, for when close calls were made, the Sabres invariably came out on the short side. This year's team, coached by Mr. 0. and lead by the Colonial Council’s scoring champ. Jim Brand, re- corded an even 9-9 overall, and 7-7 in the Council. We hope that next year’s team, lead by returning junior Ed Ryan will have even a better year, as we fond- ly recall our battle cry: Hey Ref! Do you live on a RAFT?!! The J.V. team, coach by Mr Bouck. had a disappointing season. At the beginning of the season the Jayvee’s beat Al- bany Academy and Tamerac to win the Albany Christmas Tournament After the tournament the Jayvee’s only won one more game to finish the season at 3 and 15. The J.V.’s had a tough time all season long due to the inex- perience of the players. Only half of last year's freshmen team came out this year, but now. with another year's experi- ence behind them, there are high hopes for next year's team. 51 “FRESHMEN” This year s Freshman basketball team had a very tough sea- son. as they finished with a 3-11 season. The Sabres, coached by Mr. Nethaway. always gave the opposing teams a good fight, though, as most of their losses were by less than 5 points. The Sabre Frosh. lead by co-captains Mike Vincitore and Dan Prov- ost. are expected to be a sound base for next year's J.V. Team. What happens when Schalmont girls go bowling? Many things such as: falling down in the alley, throwing the ball backwards, or even ending up on the other side of the foul light. This year's averages ranged from 140 to 65. Nancy Blumenstalk had high triple with 481 and Cindy Popolizio had high single with 205 55 57 “SKI TEAM’’ The Ski team, in only its 3rd season, found the going tough this winter. The main problem was Mother Nature. While most other ski teams were practicing up in Vermont, the Sabre team members could be seen running around after school muttering When’s it gonna SNOW? But the team almost always made a respectable showing, mixing it up in the middle of the pack. Coach Montone believes next year’s team should be even better. “VOLLEYBALL” 58 BOWLING” This year, the Schalmont Varsity Bowling Team had a very productive season. Getting off to a slow start, they rallied dur- ing the second half, losing only 5 games to finish in a tie for second place in the Colonial Council with a record of 27 wins and 21 losses After finishing second in the council, they pro- ceeded to win the championship by defeating the next best team by 58 pins. During this match, the Schalmont Bowlers rolled their high team single and triple of 1180 and 3335. respectively. This year, the bowlers finished off the season by going to the sectionals, where they finished 4th in class B and 9th out of 38 others teams. Schalmonts star in the sectionals was Joe D'Aurizio. who qualified for the inter-sectionals all- star team. Leaving the team this season are seniors Tom Tricozzi, Bill Dommelli. and Steve Renzi. who have each bowled on the team for 3 years. They are leaving the team in good hands with Joe. who took High Single (257). High Triple (673). High Average (185.69) for the team 60 The Varsity Cheerleaders enjoyed a good year of cheering dispite minor arguments, two-colored uni- forms and pulled muscles. Cheering for soccer, football, and basketball this year has left us many memories. From cheering in freezing weather to the colliding during sideline cheers, we had fun and we were glad to have cheered for our players. 62 Cheerleading is a year long sport. From tryouts in late March, to making uniforms and getting cheers together in the summer, and fi- nally to the Pep Rally in the fall and the opening of the fall sports season. Lots of people think that cheerleading is all fun and glamour, but that is a misconception. Sore throats and pulled muscles are certainly not fun and glamour. Despite all the problems that a cheerleader’s job entails, we cheerleaders are quite sure that none of us would trade it for the world. “FRESHMEN” This year’s Freshmen cheerleaders had quite a tough time at the beginning of the season, as they were lacking uni- forms. But. as the season progressed, they were out there warming the hearts of players and spectators alike. Co-captains Chris Tricozzi and Dawn VanOort expressed sorrow at the end of the season, commenting. “It was hard at first to accept the fact that our cheering season was over, but we keep in mind that there is always next year.” 64 “MAJORETTES” The Schalmont Majorettes made quite a good showing this year, sporting new jackets for the football season, and warm- ing the heart of many a sports fan. With the coming of the basketball season, one could pass the lobby after school and almost always see the squad doing their thing, as they came up with a new routine every week Through the hard work of our 8 girls in green, halftimes were made much more enjoyable for all. 65 “SPORTS DIRECTORY” BASEBALL Mr. Bouck R.
