Y. 196S C R A O E to t 9 6 to TRACK In recent years, Schalmont has had some fantastic track teams, and. last year, Schalmonls fabulous track team compiled another stupendous 11-2 record. Our determined, hard-running team was inspired by the tremendous efforts of Bob Malczyk. Ron Warner, and sophmore wonder Eric Stuart. The whole team worked to win. and they did time after time. The success of Schalmonts' track team just goes to show what great results can be gotten from talent, team- work, and determination. Our teams' overall record for the past three years stands at an overwhelming 45- 6-2. VARSITY SOCCER With all honesty, it can be said that the 1971-72 Varsity soccer team was the best ever. This season marked the first time that Schalmont won a Sectional Title in soccer. They did so by beating Colonial Council arch- rival Watervliet. 4-1, in the final game, after sweeping by Hudson (4-1) and South Glens Falls (3-1) in the preliminaries. They also won a share of the Colonial Council Title with a 5-1-0 record (12-3 overall). This year's team scored more goals than any other team (45) and gave up fewer (13 in 15 games). After a slow start, (1-3 after the first four games) the team got it all to- gether and won 14 straight games, the longest winning streak ever, allow- ing only 4 goals in that span. The school scoring record was also broken this year by two players (Joe Mangano and Mike Macken). Congratulations to our soccer team! VARSITY FOOTBALL Nobody knows how tough football really is. ex- cept those who play it. The hitting, the suffering, the agonizing acceptance of defeat or the sweet glo- ry of victory. Football demands a rare quality of man, and many of these men were present at Schalmont in 1971. This was the year that the men who played football for Schalmont paved the way for upcoming teams. It was a long. hard, uphill struggle the whole season. It was a season of un- sung heroes guts and just plain “desire. The coaching staff was young but the players made up the difference with their unparalleled performances. After an 0-7 season last year, Schalmont started this season with a victory. Everyone knew now it could be done. What a game! After this promising start, the team was beset by injuries and dissention. At midseason, the Sabres stood 1-4. but all was not yet lost. They came of age at half time at Mechan- icville and promptly won their next two, the final, a devastating blow over Draper. After the victory over Draper. Schlamont was no longer regarded a “walk-over football school, but rather as a team with a much deserved respect. Although all had given up hope of another victory at midseason, the team members didn't and that is why they re now known as “men.” TENNIS The tennis team had sort of a rough season. We won a few of the matches, but most of the time each player real- ly had to hustle. Womens Lib has reached the Schalmont tennis team. For the first time a girl has played fifth man on the team. We expect a good team because we have the the same five boys and girl back to have a winning season. JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER This year's Soccer team complied the best win-loss record, on a varsity or J.V. level, in Schalmont History. They were also the first undefeated team ever, ending the season with a 10-0-1 record. The team’s showing was a su- prise to probably everyone, except Coach Robert Zentz, whose confidence is matched only by his boasting. After losing the heart of last year's team, and with everyone speculating the var- sity’s chances, not many people thought about the J.V.’s. Under Coach Zentz’s direction, they went into competition and started to win and win. The lone blemish on their record came when Burnt Hills, a Class A school, managed to tie them, 1-1 on a goal late in the game. Their record also included two crushing defeats of Watervliet. as they won the J.V. Colonial Council Champi- onship for the third year in a row. It would be ridiculous to single out any one player, as all were instrumental in the team’s success this season. How- ever. it appears that Schalmont soccer will continue its success in the seasons to come. VARSITY BASEBALL Varsity Baseball Despite the 7-12 record compiled by last years’ Varsity Baseball team, the teams’ true potential was not reflected. Led by star shortstop John Casso, pitch- ing ace Chris Battiste. and utility man Jay Primett, the teams’ nucleus was primarily juniors. Led bv hit- ting star Joe Mangano, the teams’ offense had four 300 hitters, three of which are returning. Again prov- ing Schalmonts' offense, Rick Gilman and Ben Mas- saro connected for back-to-back home runs against Ravena. The teams' strong point was defense. After some early mistakes, the team settled down to all-around good playing. Besides three starters Chris Battiste. Keith Hunter, and Rick Gilman, our pitching staff lacked the depth needed to w in close games. Humor is a basic need to keep good spirit within a team, and we had good spirit. Gilmans white spikes, trying to preserve their natural luster, refused to slide, thus flattening Drapers’ pitcher. Good job, Rick! On the way to Waterford, the team came upon a sight to behold. A genuine Super-duper-pooper-scooper, alias sewer cleaner, sitting in a driveway near the school. Looking to this year, many familiar faces are re- turning. The team will again have a fine defense, sup- ported by a power-plus offense. Lack of a consistent pitching staff, plus a large gap to be filled at shorts- top. head the few weak points of this years’ Sabre team. GIRL’S TRACK The girl’s track team, under the supervision of Miss Suits and Miss Meader, totaled a mere 13 members, but managed to fare well, coming in second at the Colonial Council Championship track meet: Ravena being first. This year. Schalmont plans to take the trophy home! There was great progress since the previous year, since, for the first time, not only did the girls have uni- forms, but, likewise, warm-up jackets! There's high hopes of having w arm-up pants this year. Girl’s track differs from boy’s track in that we have no pole vaulting, the longest distance running is the 440. no high jump, and no high hurdles. Members wish that the school public was more aware of the girl’s track team. Boys are not the only ones to get shin splinters! VARSITY WRESTLING Wrestling is in a class by itself, as are the men who participate in this sport. This is a sport of intense competition inspired by one’s hopes of self-satisfac- tion and personal gain. Wrestling is a grueling test of one's skill, endurance, intelligence, strength and J 'sire to be a winner. The Schalmont Wrestling Team wi ild be naught if not for the desire of “Vince” to make his wrestlers true winners, and the team l. Since wres- tling’s infancy in this school, the baby has matured tremendously, just as wrestling turns boys into men. “nuff said” FROSH FOOTBALL Members of our team, cheerleaders, and spectators all combined to produce a fabulous freshman football season. Mr. Healy, our fearless leader, not only was hard-driving coach but a great guy, too. He never forgot to inform us about the statistics. Whether we lost or whether we won, we were always in good spirits. And the constant support from our cheerleaders encouraged us and let us know that we always had someone on our side. It was a rewarding season, if not in actual scores, but in the knowledge that we have the makings of a fine football team, and we are looking Toward with anticipation to the years to come. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girl’s soccer team played quite well this year with a final score of 3-1-0. Anyone must admit that you can't give credit to just one person, you must give it to the whole team. Among our powerful fullbacks was a girl with the ability to go up to a group of players, stomp her feet, and make them scat- ter. Our goalie was a brave soul who would tackle the ball to keep it from going into the goal. Our foreward line proved to be a force- ful one. Defending them were the halfbacks; powerful, quick, and determined to win. That was our team. J.V. BASEBALL Well, it was quite a year for the Junior Varsity baseball team. Coach Wally was his usual self, telling us that it's not how you play the game, it’s whether you win or lose. Our final record was 4 wins 10 loses, but we had a lot of fun in losing. Though one of the high points of the year was upsetting first place Lan- singburg by a score of 18 to 14. The low point of the year was very humilating. We let Draper get ten runs in the first inning without getting an out. Our leading hitters were Ken Pirro and Phil Aurogot. The pitching was fairly good, but the fielding we won’t even men- tion. Although the year was less than we expected, we got a lot of experience, and are hoping for a champi- onship season next year. JV FOOTBALL I guess you can’t say our team was really bad. yet we weren’t too good either. Scores like 20-0 in the other teams favor weren't too impressive, but we had a couple of good plays. Our team wasn't a power house on offense (or on defense for that mat- ter). but we tried our hardest. The games were fun until it was over. Then, in the locker room, all of a sudden everyone would get angry. Our record was more impressing than our games. A 0-4-1 perform- ance was not too good, yet we tied the record of last year's J.V. team, which means only one thing, we're consistent. All this was possible by our unfaltering spirit and leadership of Mr. Jerry Mitchell. A good coach we had. but as for spirit, it wasn’t too good. I don’t know about the others, but when 1 saw clouds in the sky, I think I prayed for a down pour. It wouldn't have made any difference. SPORT SHOR TS then I said to him. 76. you're not so tough! Pssst pssst Ah.Kawalski! Couldn't you have gone before the game? Ya gotta watch those pigeons all the time! I think my back is broken Alright, which one of you guys took the coin? I “LOVE” to play soccer. Love it!!Love it!!Lovc it!! A little traveling music please I squished a bug!!! .V ii Wonder asks, How big do you want to be?” Remember. I want 22 black coffees and 17 bagels. Got it? Son. I think it's time I told you about the birds and the bees So I tried it thought I was gonna die “Cat-gut” your tongue? These exercises sure can be fun. can’t they Kowalski? Kowalski? Hey. Wake up Kowalski!! Doe-see-doe- your partner. GOLF It seemed like a long season but we all had a good time. We had a few real close matches, and a few not so close matches, with our team always on the short side. Our I and 2 golf- ers, Bob Wanzalak and Jerry Green always put up a tough fight. Charlie Salerno turned up being the top scorer on the 0-5 team. This year looks like it should be a good year on the links for Coach O’s sabre squad. VARSITY BASKETBALL FRESHMAN Freshman basketball, this is where it all begins; this is where the young players learn the trade of the game. But it is a learning experience that teaches more than just the rules and regulations of a sport. A player learns how to be a member of a team, a part of the whole. He learns how to get along and work with others, and this is where the value of freshman basket- ball lies; not in the games won. Under the direction of Coach Nethway, our fresh- man team has learned these things, and have benefited from their experience. They are on their way to be- coming a fine team; the kind of team of which Schal- mont can be proud of. The Varsity Basketball Team starts long before anyone sees us in a game. It starts in September, ac- tually, when we, who don't go out for Fall sports, start toget ready for longest sport season inany high school. We get ready by running, getting in shape, so we have a little edge on another team. Everyone seems opti- mistic and friendly and that is what we need for a good season. It is a little different this year. For once we got something new, warm up jackets and basketball shoes. However, we worked to get those, oh well, can't expect everything. Someday though! JUNIOR VARSITY The J.V. Basketball team did not have an outstand- ing record, but they sure had lots of spirit. As of print- ing time, their record was 2-5. They did manage, how- ever, to w in the consolation game of the Holiday- Tournament at Albany Academy. Their highest offen- sive showing this season has been a 72 point showing against Lansingburgh. Coach Bouck says that they're a very small, hustling team. At this time, they are led in scoring by Mike Catino and Steve Jess. We wish the J.V. Basketball team better luck next year. VARSITY BASKETBALL BOWLING • • i . . d§- ' f f. ' . W; ■III 1 I This years ski team should have a much improved year. The potential of the skiers has improved over last year’s team, considering all of the varsity has a year experience. Even with these factors helping us. we have to put up with an awful lot and do everything on our own. This years more experienced skier’s had to teach the youger inexperienced racers all of the skills of racing. If nothing else we always have fun skiing and laughing at some of “Theodores” sayings, such as “Ski slow, but go fast and vin UJ V . Schalmont’s 1971 Kail Produc- tion. under the direction of John B. Sheehan, was to- tally different from anything done before. It consisted of fairy tales and stories adapted to modern times, in which the actors conveyed ideas through pantomine. Story Theatre could be classified as pure theatre. Rather than the use of elaborate sets and costumes, the actors enthusiastically improvised their parts, us- ing almost no props. The stage was bare, except for the talent. The fascination and charm of Story Thea- tre was in its’ simplicity. Those who cannot tell the golden difference between childlike and childish may find themselves in for a te- dious evening. Story Theatre is for the pure in mind. Barnes Asst. Director Tacy Bowlin Lighting Malcolm Scott, Glenn Heinmiller Music Charles Salerno, Marilynn Buehler. Diane Astemborski. Mike St. Clair. Paulina Posselt, Schalmont's foreign exchange student from Santiago, Chile is staying with Kitty kagay, her United States hostess. Paulina speaks no English and is participating in the 10-week Open Door student exchange program. Paulina finds the people in the United States very warm and spontaneous. Kitty's one special plan for Pau- lina is to teach her how to ski. Schalmont High School has added a new dimension to their foreign language studies. This was a foreign language buffet dinner, prepared by the students of the advanced French, German, and Spanish classes. The dinner was held Wednesday. November 16 in the Schalmont Middle School cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. Since the studies also include culture of the countries the dinner was hoped to break the monotony of classroom work, but be within the program. The students handled the dinner themselves, with the aid of Mr. Lamanois Mangulis. Mrs. Diana Cichello. and M iss Vickie Hoeth. Participation was on a volunteer basis, and there was a good turn out. The students were able to try various foods from French. German, and Spanish speaking countries. AUDIO VISUAL Ahl. L. Boyle, R Elmore. V. Miller. W. Myers, R Schworm, J. Oliver , was presented to Scha. monl audiences in May 1971. It marked the first lime ever that Middle School students participated in a H.S. dramatic pro- duction. The title role was amply filled by Mark Csontos, a sixth-grader. Others having major parts were: Jim Partington (Mr. Bumble). Alison Celia (Widow Corney). Patric Smith (The Artful Dodger). Mike Macken (Fagin), Janice Ahles (Nancy), and Tim Evendcn (Bill Sykes). However, the entire cast, the crew, and the orchestra were all outstanding and helped to make Oliver the most delightful musical produc- tion ever in Schalmont's history.
