TREASURER Nick Renna . . . PARLIAMENTARIAN c L A S s 0 F F I C E R S 30 To the Class of 1966: For four years we have worked as a group and learned many things together. Perhaps you have seemingly spent a major portion of your time in assimilating facts, but when I see you now as Seniors, I realize how much you have been acquiring the less easily measured facets of education: responsibility, initiative, insight and purpose. On all of your hard-earned successes, tangible and intangible, I wish to congratulate you. But, in proportion to your high achievement as a class and as individuals, you will become acutely aware, in the stringent words of Albert Camus, that any fulfillment is a bondage, which drives us to a higher fulfillment.” As you now face this rigorous challenge, may you continue to use the knowledge and interests found at Schalmont to arrive progressively at greater accomplishments and more significant service in an ever-expanding sphere. My very best wishes go with you all. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Our foreign exchange student this year is Carmen Serrano. Carmen is from Ecuador, in South America. When Carmen first came to Schalmont she didn’t know a word of English, but now she is speaking like a native of the United States. When she was asked how she likes Schal- mont she said “I love it! the kids are so nice and friendly to me.” Carmen wishes to continue her education in the future. Carmen is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Barnes in West Hill. Many thanks to Debbie Barnes for all she has done in making Carmen happy to be with us. 98 SCHALMONT ’S GOOD-WILL AMBASSADOR Either it’s raining, or the bells are ring- ing; but if you find both happening, it’s Sunday.” This is a very accurate description of Muenster, the city in which I lived in Germany. I had the opportunity, through the American Field Service, to spend eight weeks living and learning with the Budden- kotte family in this city. Through life, people learn about other people; because of limited acquaintance, though, we learn only about the people im- mediately around us. The purpose of the A.F.S. is the exchanging of ideas and knowl- edge of people through first-hand ex- perience. The basis for this exchange, then, is to promote understanding between people and countries through a living relationship with them. We can learn the background of the peoples of other lands and they can learn ours by living and talking with each other. I owe many thanks for this chance to participate in a unique and very rewarding experience to the parents and to the teach- ers who gave their time and projected a willingness through their constant efforts, and to the many students who also gave of themselves for the A.F.S. To all of these people, I wish to extend my appreciation for giving me this opportunity. 99 HONOR SOCIETY SITTING (L to RV K DeLorey, G. Kline, D. Barnes, M. Emerson, N. Collis; STANDING (ROW 1) G. He was greeted on the runway by Secretary of State FRANK MAROTTA, and First Lady ADELAIDE CONSTANTINO presented his wife with a bouquet of red roses. The Premier was immediately whisked to a private room in which a press conference was held. Newspaperwoman NANCY COLLIS caused an uproar when she accused the Premier’s government of attempting to sabotage the Olympic Games and it was only the intervention of ED COOK that prevented an actual fight. After the press conference, Premier Blanchard was taken to visit a farm. This farm, master-minded by PAUL HOFMANN and operated by RON DEAN and WAYNE WNUK, is the entire of New Jersey, converted into farmland on which newly developed plant strains are grown experimentally. The farm is especially proud of its starch-free potatoes for dieters, developed by Dr. FRAN FIORELLO. Premier Blanchard’s next engagement was a meeting with the President himself. CARMEN SERRANO served as translator. The meeting was attended by Ambassador BILL BROOMHHALL, Defense Secretary JACK KOCHEM, the Premier’s personal aide, SUE BERICAL, and foreign relations expert CYNTHIA TYTKO. The next item on the agenda was a luncheon. The main course, an exotic dish called spaghetti, was prepared by the President’s personal chef. Monsieur LOUIS LEGGIERO. The Rev. JAMES DELLA QUILLA said the benediction and MARIANNE CASLINE was the Master of Ceremonies. After lunch the Premier was driven to his hotel by chauffeur MARY FITZGIBBONS in a gray Pontiac donated for the occasion by the HOLUB Rent-A-Car Agency. Premier Blanchard stayed at the famous Sheraton-HODEROWSKI Hotel in mid-Manhattan. Blanchard was greeted by doorman BRAD TAYLOR. Bellhops BARB SGARLATA, GLORIA FERRI, LINDA DONOHUE and JUDY WEAKLEY assisted the Premier with his luggage after he was registered by CLIFF WILLIAMSON. GAIL STOM- SKI gave him a manicure, compliments of the Sheraton-Hoderowski. Then DOUG CHRISTIE and MARC McCLAINE came from RENNA Tux to fit Blanchard for the Ambassador’s Ball, to be held that evening. Next, the Premier went for a tour of New York City. In the Metropolitan Museum of Art he was privileged to see a painting by the famous CATHY JAZEBOSKI and a plaster-of-Paris sculpture by the less-famous BUTCH GETTER. ED KRYLOWICZ and RON LaVALLEE were ushers at Radio City, where the Premier unfortunately had to miss the much-acclaimed movie, Death of a Salesgirl, starring LARRY FASULA and NANCY ZIELINSKI. Blanchard was taken on a ferry boat ride by Captain WARREN FARINA to Liberty Island, where he visited the Statue itself. The Premier then returned to his hotel to get ready for the Ambassador’s Ball. Ele- vator operator TEDDI CELIA whisked him to his nineteenth floor suite, where he was met by LARRY JUST and RON LONGO, two members of his personal staff. The Premier dressed and was then driven to the Ambassador’s Ball by his private chauffeur, BOB MENNILLO. The dinner was attended by many dignitaries, among them: Olympic champion, KEN KOTTKE; actress, SUE MARTIN; fashion model, MARIE GOBEL; dress designer, DEB GETTER; newspaper editors, JOHN ETTORE and BOB VAN SCHAICK; winner of the Daytona 500, DAVE NEZNEK; authority on horses, WAYNE KNOTEK; Man of the Year, GLENN DICKERSON; Nobel Prize Winner, MARK EMERSON; and Harvard President, LARRY RUSKOWSKI. Dinner speeches were given by PAULA SILFVENIUS, DENNIS RUSTAY and PAUL WAG- NER. The ball itself was attended by 500 guests, among them: Miss Universe, DONNA PIOTROWSKI; tycoon and oil magnate, KEN SWEET; novelist SUE WOOD; pizza princess, SANDY PASQUARIELLO; MIKE DeSORBO, controversial leader of the SPCA; astronaut, MAUREEN BUTLER; playwright BARRY GRAY; composer ED PENDT; Brigadier General STAN SCHIHER; acrobatic team, ALVERTA CAMERON and MARIANNE FIGUEROA; commedienne KATHY McKEON; inventor, LEON HILLMAN; ballet dancer LUCI ADAMS; TV announcer JEFF ROONEY; horti- culturist DIANE SORELLA; sportscaster DAN RIGNEY; beautician JIM WICK- STEAD; national ski champion NANCI HOPKINS; Mad Magazine editor, LINDA YOUNG; mad scientist MARK MacFARLANE; advertising artist KAY McCLENE- HAN; CAROLYN PACKARD, wife of a well-known gambler; PAT RELYEA and MARY PHANEUF, neurosurgeons; MIKE PIDGEON, manufacturer of the new car Firebrand”; and CHERYL MASTERPOLO, botanist. The Premier led the dancing with Miss KATHLEEN DeLOREY, Secretary of the Treasury. The guests were entertained by GARY WENSLEY and his Orchestra, con- sisting of DEB BARNES and BETTY ANDREWS on clarinet, FRANK CALIFANO on bass, RIT DeLOREY on sax, TIM SMITH and GAIL WELLS on trumpet, BOB JASON on piano, PAULINE LIEBIG on guitar, and GARY KLINE on drums. Re- freshments served were furnished by the STEENBURGH Catering Service. SANDY CLARK and ELAINE BELROSE were hostesses. After the Ball, the Premier went out on the town. At a brief stop at Christopher’s cur- rently owned by DIANE SORELLA, he managed to see the floor show, featuring JUDY FEUZ and CHERYL FLETCHER. Next stop was O’BRIEN’S, formerly the Pepper- mint Lounge. Here MARCIA MILLER served the Premier dinner prepared by LORETTA PITT. Cigarette girls SHARYN ENNIST and NANCY GARNEY were there. BRUCE HOPMEIER had a small band made up of HOLLY FLAGG and SHIRLEY JOHNSON on guitar, VICKY KELLER on piano, KAREN KAZUBSKI on drums and CLARE KRITZ on bass. The Premier then took a drive through Central Park in a hansom driven by DAVE NEZNEK. He next took a subway back to his hotel on which were also riding SUE McCLOUD and LAUREL LONG, two average New Yorkers. At the hotel, DOLORES FERRI, the night clerk, gave him his key, and the Premier retired from a busy day. 141 CLASS WILL We, the members of the class of 1966, being of sound mind, do hereby give and be- queath our most prized possessions to the members of the class of 1967. Not too many years ago, a high school education was sufficient for most jobs; college was almost a lux- ury except for those who planned ca- reers in such fields as medicine and law. Today, the pattern is entirely dif- ferent. Advances in technology affect everyone in every business . . . and, frankly, a high school education is sel- dom enough to equip you to meet the challenge of the present ... to help you get a job with a future. What’s the answer? More educa- tion . . . four-year colleges, junior col- leges, community colleges, technical schools, extension courses, anything at all which will increase your knowl- edge, develop your personal skills. There are jobs waiting . .. but these jobs call for knowledge and skill. Gen- GE eral Electric is just one of the many companies which will have job open- ings in the years to come for those who can meet job requirements. There are new products, new technologies on today’s drawing boards . . . with still others yet to be thought of . . . which will call for people with education, training and ability. The future needs not only men and women to come up with ideas, but also people to put those ideas into practice . . . designers and developers, scientists and sales- men, technicians and teachers . . . people with sufficient education to fill jobs. Now it’s up to you. You may choose the broad highway open to you through more education ... or wander down the dead end street of lost opportuni- ties. If you keep learning, you’ll keep growing . . . growing with our nation in the age of space.
