Dedication In sincere appreciation of all she has done for us, we, the Class of 1965, wish to dedicate the 1965 LeSabre to Mrs. Caroline Roberts. As class advisor for the past two years, she has worked with us on all our activities; with patience and understanding, she has helped us to begin to realize our potential. We will not forget her behind-the- scenes efforts to make our Senior Play the memorable occasion it was, nor her work to make our Junior Prom successful. Not only collectively, but indi- vidually as well, she has listened, and offered suggestions; yet all the while she has showed us that final solutions must be our own. By this dedication, our apprecia- tion of her unflagging regard for all will remain forever recorded. 5 CHARLES ALFREE EDITHANN BELL There is no heart so bold. This is in part due to the fact that I have had the privilege of working with you throughout your senior high school years. This association has been most rewarding. I have had the opportunity to observe your suc- cesses and failures. I have been pleased as you successfully assumed responsibility. Your differing capabilities have been well demonstrated during the years of our association. Graduation will mark the end of formal schooling for some of you, for others graduation opens the door for further education. We have tried to prepare you for the future, whatever your plans may be. I trust that your preparation at Schalmont will enable you to readily adjust to the many situations you will face. I will miss you as a class and as individuals, but be assured that as you leave Schalmont my best wishes for your success will accompany you. Thank you also for the many considerate things you did for me. It was a pleasure work- ing with you. Second, as you leave Schalmont, remember Lord Bacon’s maxim, Knowledge is power.” There is much you do not know; there is much that you know which you will forget; and some of what you know now you will discard in the light of new knowledge. You will succeed if you continue to add to your knowledge by reading, studying, and thinking. I hope that Schalmont has helped to give you this knowledge’ for power”—power to work creatively and power to live meaningfully. My best wishes for great happiness go to each of you. Mornings I either shopped in the market place and bargained over prices, or toured a sarape factory or silver mine; after- noons I attended university classes and typically Mexican dances. I climbed mountains, viewed a parade and bull fight, and traveled. But most important of all, I enjoyed the fun and company of Mexicans of all ages. People around the world are basically the same; they desire food, shelter, clothing and seek pleasure through music, art, and sports. Mexicans divide their time for work and leisure: they work from eight until one o’clock, the clos- ing time for business activity; a siesta follows a large dinner, elaborately prepared by the wom- en; work resumes from four until seven; a light meal at eight or nine precedes a small gathering of friends and neighbors who talk or sing accompanied by a guitar. Often they at- tend parties or fiestas in the plaza. I would like to thank all those who sup- ported Schalmont’s Foreign Exchange Program which made possible this opportunity to visit a foreign country. May this worthwhile and rewarding program continue and grow in the years to come. dr Ac JSat Exchange Student This particular year has given me much understanding of the manners and customs of the people of America. I have many friends whom I will never forget, for they have been very kind to me, an AFS Exchange Student. It was a great pleasure that we were able to talk with each other as friends about our countries, to understand each other, and to do things together. I hope the peoples of this world will continue always to support this program. 92 Rotary Exchange Student It has been a most significant year for me in sharing school life with you. You not only study hard, but also participate in and enjoy many activities. Through these activities you have shown a school spirit that I would not have found in Japan. Other things I found in you and would like to acquire are the deep love for your country and interest in world problems. Now we have many difficult and miserable troubles among the world’s peoples, but it is impossible to solve them unless people know and love each other. Since I came here and have come to know you, I have the thought and hope that our generation will be able to accomplish lasting peace in our world. With my American family's love for me as a daughter and your kindness to me as a friend, I have had a marvelous and happy year. Thank you very much. I hope I can keep in contact with you after I leave America. 93 Qtudent Council Left to right: Cheryl Pangburn, Vice President; John Bucci, Presi- dent; Janet Blumenstalk, Parlia- mentarian. When commencement is over, where do you go from there? Not too many years ago, a high school education was sufficient for most jobs; college was almost a lux- ury except for those who planned ca- reers in such fields as medicine and law. Today, the pattern is entirely dif- ferent. Advances in technology affect everyone in every business . . . and, frankly, a high school education is sel- dom enough to equip you to meet the challenge of the present ... to help you get a job with a future. What’s the answer? More educa- tion . . . four-year colleges, junior col- leges, community colleges, technical schools, extension courses, anything at all which will increase your knowl- edge, develop your personal skills. There are jobs waiting . . . but these jobs call for knowledge and skill. Gen- eral Electric is just one of the many companies which will have job open- ings in the years to come for those who can meet job requirements. There are new products, new technologies on today’s drawing boards . . . with still others yet to be thought of . . . which will call for people with education, training and ability. The future needs not only men and women to come up with ideas, but also people to put those ideas into practice . . . designers and developers, scientists and sales- men, technicians and teachers . . . people with sufficient education to fill jobs. Now it’s up to you. You may choose the broad highway open to you through more education ... or wander down the dead end street of lost opportuni- ties. If you keep learning, you’ll keep growing . . . growing with our nation in the age of space.
