“ WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS.” “DON QUIXOTE” BY DUMAS O a O ma O n FOREWORD TITLE PAGE TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ADVERTISERS We, the members of the Senior Class of nineteen hundred fifty-eight, feel grateful and privileged to have the honor of being the first candidates for Graduation from Schalmont High School. In an effort to show our appreciation, we would like to dedicate its first yearbook, SABRETTE, to everyone who has helped make our beautiful school become a reality. We dedicate it to YOU: the administration who has endured the headaches and heartaches of organizing our school system, our Principal and friend, Mr. Brown, who has hoped, planned, and worked so long and earnestly for a centralized school district. the members of the faculty who have guided us so patiently through our studies during this school year, and in many cases, during previous years. all of the area taxpayers, upon whom rests the responsibility of financing our school, the architects, construction companies, and workers who did such a fine job. And last, but certainly by far not least, our wonderful parents who have valued education so dearly that they have sacrificed that we might have a better future. £ cAjiX X} ADMINISTRATION To the Seniors of 58 You have had a golden opportunity this year. To you has been granted the privilege of establishing Tradition. You, the first graduates of Schalmont High School, furnished the Leadership in the many Student Activities which have been inaugurated this year. The results of your efforts will be noted through the coming years. The success of our Student Council and our Service Squad is your success. The establishment of this Yearbook in the face of severe discouragement is your Triumph. You have served your school well in its infancy. May your life be one of continuing Service to others. GUIDANCE COUNSELORS The guidance services at Schalmont High School offer a continuous program to help each student develop his talents fully - both for school and for adult life. Through individual and group counseling, the students are assisted in their orientation to High Scuooi; directed as to proper study habits; guided in the choice of proper High School courses; shown the possibilities for training and work beyond school as well as college choice; and aided with minor social and personal adjustments. To help form a clearer picture of each student, tests are regularly administered. Academic records, voca- tional information, college bulletins and scholarship materials are gathered. Each student stays with the same counselor throughout his High School career; enabling both to develop a further understanding of his progress. Left to right: J. KNEFLEY N. NOXON MR. SENIOR DEAN Dear Members of the Senior Class, I have enjoyed my first year at Schalmont High School for many reasons, one of the most important being my pleasant association with you. As I review this past year, many happy memories come to mind - your capacity for fun, but also for hard work; your willingness to help each other and to work together; your realization that you must plan for the future; your many thoughtful kindnesses to me. Your school is very proud of you; as the first senior class to graduate from the new high school, you have set a fine pattern for future senior classes to follow. For each of you, I wish a life rich in enduring satisfactions. Sincerely yours, SENIOR HONOR STUDENTS VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN Carole Sutton Gary Phillips Sharlene Burke David Fries Ira Livingston .. . I Lois Johnson Greer Rood AS WE WILL IT, SO SHALL IT BE According to tradition, each Senior Class bequeaths to its successors, titles, characteristics, and possessions belonging to fellow classmates. Let us take a last look at these qualities before they are passed on to their proud new owners in the class of 1959. We blow away the dust and open our Treasure Chest of fond memories. Although our more tangible possessions are passed on to the class of '59, we can not bequeath our fond memories that go along with having been Seniors. The first objects in the treasure chest are two golden keys to fit the doors of spacious wardrobe closets. These have been the possessions of Loreley Borst and David Fries, and are now being willed to DIANE SIMONE and BRIAN MASTERPOLO. There is a pair of sneakers and a basketball rulebook which belonged to Tommy Bowe. We hope that CHARLIE FALCIGNO can successfully fill his shoes on the court. A megaphone recalls the spirited cheerleading of Pat Clancy. It shall belong hereafter to MARY ELLEN ERSCHEN. A package of razor blades neatly wrapped and beribboned was once owned by Barry Taylor. He be- queaths them to VICTOR DEHAVEN with his best wishes. A gavel calls to mind the executive ability of Gary Phillips. This he leaves with all its headaches to the next Senior Class President. A dictionary (collegiate copy) which was once owned by Greer Rood, is being passed on to BOB WATROUS who will no doubt make good use of it. A mirror sends back the reflection of Charlie Vedder's and Lois Johnson's good looks. The tag reads to CHUCK DUCKWALD and JANICE COONS to be worn with a smile. Lois also wills the thoughts of a long distance friend with a box of scented writing paper to LINDA CONGER. Edna Smith is willing to give up her Secretary's notebook and her piggyback refills to SANDY GEIER, and Agnes Lewis leaves her full, full skirts to PAT LAIR who has quite a few of her own. Since Ellen Hoehn has by now received her driving license, she can hardly wait to give up her per- mit. This she leaves to KRIS NEFF with lots of luck. Gerry Kugler leaves the keys to his hot” '51 Ford lying in the bottom of our treasure chest. He be- queaths them (though not really) to FRED TABER who drives a Ford of his own. We still have many qualities to leave which cannot be represented by material things. One such quality is the shyness of Sharlene Burke and Eddie Kazlauskas. This is quietly willed to ELSIE COOPER and LARRY DOUGLAS. To MIKE KNEFLEY is bequeathed some of Nooly Vedder's charm and flirtatious style. Nooly refuses to give it all up though, for he claims he may need it in the future. The petite stature of Joyce Herodes is bestowed upon JEAN O’BRAY and Bob Duchesne regretfully leaves his Service Squad Post to LINDA BRADSHAW who will make sure that the rules and regulations are faithfully adhered to. Sally Crawley bequeaths her cute little ponytail to anyone who is not fortunate enough to have naturally-curly hair. Her warm personality is bestowed upon SUE BERNASKI with best wishes for the future. In one corner Alex Chagnon is making sure that WALT ERICKSON will know how to correctly run the movie projector next year. In another corner, Alyce Lee Evans and Charlie Hansen, upon whom rests the title of Best Dancers, are showing a new dance step to PAT DERBY and STEVE MIHAL, Pat Albert is coming down the hall, but she is frowning. She must have already given her dimples and infectious smile to KAREN McKEON. Carole Sutton leaves her Chemistry review book (complete with answers) to anyone who needs it to study the night before the exam. She also bequeaths the fun she had as a Senior to NANCY BROWN. Bill Wadsworth leaves the fun and responsibility of being Student Council President and Varsity Bas- ketball Captain to some lucky person. He also leaves his stack of Mad magazines to any library that will take them in. Bestowed upon EMLYN HOCKIN is Ellen Schilling's good natured personality. She also leaves behind her the ability to almost fall asleep in class. Bill Wilkie at first refused to leave anything to anybody but upon further persuasion decided to leave behind a back copy of the New York Times and an I like Ike button. Ike Livingston leaves his vacant chair in Math class to anyone with the ability to fill it. He also leaves behind his calling card bearing the inscription have gun, will travel. And to Miss Van Schaick goes our most sincere gratitude and appreciation for endless time, effort, patience, and understanding spent in helping us all to face our responsibilities as Seniors. To the Juniors we leave all the above plus the wonderful feeling of just being Seniors. To the Sophomores we wish all the success in their first attempt to being upperclassmen. And to the Freshmen, we will the inevitable and fabulous fate of becoming Seniors. And we the Seniors leave... the class of '58. SENIOR PL A) First row, left to right: A. Chag- non - Lighting, C. CLASS PROPHECY Several years have elapsed since that fateful day in June when the class of '58 graduated and became free from the confining, yet protecting walls of high school. Since then, each of us has gone our sepa- rate ways and today we find ourselves meeting again at a class reunion. Some of our friends we have seen regularly through the past years and others we have not seen since the day of our graduation. In either case there is much to tell each other. The reunion is held at the Green Saber, one of the best restaurants in the state. It is owned and operated by Bob Duchesne who is there to greet each one of us at the door with his smile the same as usual. We notice that Gerry Kugler is the first to arrive. Since he became the head of the police force, he is always on time. He tells us that it was the Schalmont Service Squad that first fired his ambition to be Police Chief. While we were talking to Gerry, several of our old classmates strolled in. Edna Smith was among them. She had already gotten out her pen and was taking notes. She has been writing the lyrics to popular songs for the past few years and has made several records herself. Barry Taylor, the nationally known disc jockey, spins at least one of Edna's releases on every one of his programs. He is in great demand for record hops and had to cancel several engagements to be with us tonight. Sharlene Burke and Pat Clancy have come in together and seem to be discussing at great length the contents of a certain letter. They tell us that they often compare notes as they write Advice to the Lovelorn columns in two separate newspapers. We hear a familiar laugh and turn to see Ellen Hoehn. Everyone is surprised to learn that she is the Drivers' Training Instructor in an area school. The car that she uses was designed by Alex Chagnon whom we remember from our own Drivers' Training class. The next person to walk in is Nooly Vedder who has jdst recently taken over the Gallop Poll. He says he enjoys his work immensely because of the number of beautiful girls he meets. He has just discovered that the average American's favorite toothpaste is the one formulated and patented by Gary Phillips. The reason for its popularity is that Pat Albert’s captivating smile appears on all the advertisements. Carole Sutton is next to arrive. She has just returned from Vienna where she has been gathering material for her latest novel. While in Europe she stopped in Paris and is telling Loreley Borst and Sally Crawley all about it. Sally is teaching kindergarten this year and recently wrote a book on the Trials of Teaching. Loreley is a substitute teacher and we hear that none of the pupils can put any of their tricks over on her. Tommy Bowe sent a wire saying he was sorry not to be here, but his job as movie producer in Holly- wood takes all his time. Lois Johnson is also in Hollywood. She won the Miss America Contest a few years ago and is busy now with her latest movie contract. David Fries has become one of the City'sbest doctors and Greer Rood is his capable nurse. They ar- rive bearing bandages, iodine, and spirits of ammonia, Just to be prepared, they tell us. Ike Livingston and Ed Kazlauskas are seated at a table talking over old times. Ike is the noted architect, renowned for his work on Outerspace construction. Ed is president of the Farm Board. He has to leave early for he is doing a television series on new farm machinery. Bill Wadsworth joins them and soon all three are laughing. Coach Wadsworth has had a winning team for the past four years. Charlie Hanson comes waltzing in. He operates Hanson's Dance Studio where they guarantee to teach anybody anything in three easy lessons. Soon Bill Wilkie drives up in his convertible. He has started a new and successful chain of super markets and begins handing out dill pickle samples to all those present. Ellen Schilling has become a noted dress designer and she enters wearing one of her loveliest new creations. While we are admiring it we hear the purr of a little foreign car as it drives up to the door. Out steps Alyce Lee Evans with her mink coat and white poodle. She married a handsome and success- ful TV producer and director and has invited us all to come visit her at their spacious home. Joyce Herodes and Agnes Lewis are the last to arrive. Joyce is a private secretary for a large business firm in Albany. Agnes gave up her secretarial career and is now happily married. She shows us numerous pictures of her sweet twin daughters and she explains that she is late because the babysitter did not get there on time. We were all glad to hear from our old classmates and we talked long into the night about the past years and about the good times we had together in high school. Before we left, plans were already being made for a second reunion on a future date. CO U — Uj 2 u UI TlOItfl Another Fine Building by Smd Engineers - Contractors P.O.
