SHS Welcomes Mami 8: Martin if .. v , 'G M it ti Q, fx ml' 4.1457 ,A i' a ,mga tfet 2 if On August 22, Schaller welcomed Mami Udaka to the community. Mami is originally from Nahoga City, Japan and is residing in the Lyle Martin home while staying here. She has had a busy year taking Family Living, American Government, Algebra II, American Problems, Speech, Typing, Art, Choir and Girls Glee. Mami also was a basketball cheerleader. Her hobbies include bowling, fishing, cooking and listening to re- cords. When asked why she wanted to come here, she commented, to improve my English, and learn and experience American culturef' Mami's memora- ble moments this year included cheerleading, singing, her solo at contests, and graduating with the senior class. She has enjoyed all the people she has met here and also likes the special activities such as Prom and Homecoming. Mami will be here until July 28, at which time she will go back to Japan where she plans to pursue a career in ground service at an airport. We wish her luck in the future and have enjoyed having her with us throughout the year. llif, l T 1 as 5:4 it i it ,fl i ilii T V ff A Martin Edwards Mondaca Santiago arrived in Schaller on Sept. 28, from Chile where he has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. While staying here, he too is residing in the Lyle Martin home. This year Martin is studying American Government, American Problems, English, Speech, Algebra ll, Shop, Typing, and World Histo- ry. Martin's pastimes include learning to play the trumpet and piano, bowling, fishing, tennis, cruis- ing , and playing pinball. He also is on the track team this year. Martin wishes to improve his English and feels the foreign exchange student program will help world peace and understanding. His memorable mo- ments this year include when he spent the day at Duff Brown's by Panora Lake, visiting the uwitchis house , with friends, and taking a trip to California. Martin's future plans are to finish 2 V2 years of high school, then go to college to become a lawyer and be involved in politics. He leaves us with this thought: Schaller is a friendly town and everyone is really nice to me. l'd like to thank all the people in the school especially my teachers for being so nice . We wish Martin the best of luck in the future and thank him for sharing this year with us. fe? x Robert making good use of his time! Don't look Mary Jo! Actually studying?! No need for a megaphone. V .. of ' Annual Staff Creates 1981 Rocket Barb and Sharon attended summer yearbook camp, learning new techniques to improve our annual. The entire annual staff attended a workshop at Buena Vista College finding new ways to develop the annual. The selling of annual ads was a project all annual staffers participated in. Raising money was also accomplished by basketball concessions, selling of shirts, magazine sales, and the selling of annuals. Many hours of hard work are put into the making of a fine annual. Thanks to all who helped, and we hope you enjoy our annual! 1. Sharon Cole and Barb Brown-the editors at work. 2. Diane Wendel and Rita Tokheim working on another double page spread. 3. Five years ago he was involved in an auto accident on a snow swept highway - an accident that took the lives of a mother and her daughter. Since then, each storm brings back to reality the mishap. That's why Jeff moved, with his wife Mary, to this cabin in the mountains, far away from people. Now, as the blizzard rages, there's a rap on the door. A man enters, says he was hunting and got lost. He tells them the story of a man who had a wife and daughter. They couldn't get along, so she took the child and left. Finally, she started back to him, had an accident in a snow storm and she and the daughter were killed. When the husband got word a couple of years later he swore revenge - said he'd get the man that did it if he had to track him across half the world. It slowly dawns on Jeff and Mary that they're trapped with the crazed husband. .CAST Jeff Mulkey . . , .Rich King Mary . , . Ellie Taylor The Hunter , Tim Taylor The Woman . All-School Play THE REMARKABLE INCIDENT AT CARSON COR- NERS There is no scenery. Except for a few chairs, there are no props. Late comers in the audience are invited to come up and sit on the stage, which they do. Their smiles broaden as the students start what appears to be a mock trial. A few months ago, a student fell to his death from the school fire escape - or perhaps he was pushed. The purpose of the mock trial is to fix the responsibility. Now the proceedings no longer seem funny. One revelation forces the next and soon the entire community finds itself involved: the doctor who didn't think the emergency call was serious, a druggist who moved the boy's body aggravating his injury, the politician who thought that appropriations for a safer school building could wait. Several vainly attempt to stop this mock trial, but it continues and tension builds. Then the father of the dead boy reveals that he, too, is responsible. Many hours of hard work and planning were spent to help make this year's carnival a success. Each ele- mentary student was given one free ticket to be used that night. This proved helpful, as many people at- tended. Some of the activities included-the duck pond, dart throw, cake walk, raffle wheel, wet sponge throw, jelly bean throw, fortune telling, free throw contest, and the jail. The night was enjoyed by all who attended. Only Todd knows for sure! This could lead to a promising career! The things l get into! 4 , . On Tuesday, February 6, the SHS Swing Choir, Instrumentalists, and Mrs. Stille travelled to Pochanatas High School for the annual swing choir competition. - Schaller was one of the nine schools in Class C. After weeks of rehearsal we felt ready to do our best. We performed three numbers: Let Me Share My Music With You, Both Sides Now , and Theme from 'New York, New York ' fsoloist: Gary Pylei. We watched several more groups perform until finally the time came to announce Class C winners. Third place - second place - we didn't hear our name! Then first place, Schaller! It was a great feeling collecting the first place trophy - the culmination of many early morning hours of preparation. 55 Glees Sing In Perfect Harmony Front row-Kim Snyder, Kari Hansen, Sue Barlow, Cami Taylor, Julie King, Mami Udaka. The highlight of the year was defeating Storm Lake 15-5 after losing earlier in the season by a score of 9-10. The Rockettes again beat them in the Sectional tournament 7-2 to earn their way to the Sectional finals. They played a tough St. Mary's team and lost 0-2 but advanced to Districts in spite of the loss. Here they were defeated by the state qualifying team of Albert City-Trues- dale in the 1st round. ln losing only one senior, Deb Wen- del, there are hopes for a better season next year. Four girls were selected to the All-conference team these beingg Deb Wendel, Tracey VanBuskirk, Diane Wendel, and Nita Skou. Deb and Nita also gained all-area honors. With a strong nucleus the girls should be very competitive in the years to come. ri .klyl V E .. ,:r. l .N ' K 4 7 . I . :., I 51 3 V A , ijy. im- f K ill . -- ..... kg yr l3. v X I A ' 1 5 y .-.. All the Wag When the volleyball program was started at Schaller nobody ever imagined that in only four short years we would produce a state qualifying team-but we did. Practices started a week before school and at this time a goal was set. This goal was to reach the state tournae ment after falling one match short for the last two years. Hard work paid off and the girls lost only two matches during the regular season. These losses were both to Newell which cost us the conference title. The Rockettes were also entered in the Lytton Tournament which they won. Taking one match at a time, the girls became Sectional champs and had earned their way into Dis' tricts. With a lot of teamwork and crowd support the girls defeated Storm Lake in 3 games to become District champs and gained a berth in the State Tournament. The Ricikettes had a tough time at State being matched against the number one team in the state. Even though they didn't win any games, the experience is one they will never forget. We will be losing 3 seniors, Tracey Van Buskirk, Jonie Waters, and Diane Wendel, but have many underclassmen with experience. Post season all- conference honors went to Tracey VanBuskirk, Jonie Waters, Diane Wendel, Kathy Brenner, Brenda Kenny, and Sandy Manteufel. Tracey, Jonie, and Sandy also gained state honors. They ended up second in the conference with Wall Lake, Newell, and Crestland all tying for first. This year was a special year for head coach Jim Taylor. He has been coaching for twenty-five years, eight of those while in Schaller. During his coaching career he has accummulated 150 wins. lt came about after the its. victory over Battle Creek this season. To celebrate this achievement there was a pep rally held in his honor. He received plaques, a trophy, autographed football from the football team, and to top it off two lovely decorated cakes made in the shape of a football field and football. Wefre sure Mr. Taylor will always remember this day and we hope he will be a sharer of another 150 wins. They set three preseason goals, first to win conference, second to win the Conference Tournament, and then to go to State. The Rockets lost their first conference game of the season to Wall Lake, so they finished second in the conference. At the Conference Tournament they revenged the earlier loss to Wall Lake and beat them in semifinals. The next night they lost to Pomeroy in the championship game. Sectional play came around and the Rockets blew out a Battle Creek team then met up with Galva- Holstein. The Rockets trailed the whole game but came out on top in the end. Schaller then went on to win Sectionals by defeating Crestland of Early. In District play again the Rockets trailed the whole game by about eight points, but they didn't quit and with a few minutes left, Danny Manteufel put the Rockets ahead for good. In the District finals Schaller took Woodbury Central to advance them to substate. The Rockets led the whole game till the fourth quarter and again ended up on the short end. The boys did fall short in all three of their goals but had one of the most successful seasons on record at Schaller High. f fs, 1 A Rockets End Season Post season awards went Dale Wiese who was named lst Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Area, and honorable mention Northwest Iowa.
