Fact is, we hardly ever see him ofhcially except at the first assembly of the year . . . andiwe can't think of anyone who can soften the blow of returning to school better than Dr. Smith. We like the Way he beams all over when he talks and makes us feel right at home. We were reminded recently that the present senior class is the first to have spent its entire high school career in the present S.H.S. facilities, which were en- larged to include the cafeteria and auditorium, largely through the efforts of Dr. Smith, back in 1940. One other thing we can say of the Admiral, that he doesn't even know himself, is that the inspiration of this year's BANDY came distinctly from his direction. Back at that first September assembly, he said some- thing about all of us setting out on a voyage of dis- covery lasting from September to june. We can't guar- antee the exact Wording at this distance, with home port clearly in sight, but the idea is intact. If you'll accept our apologies, Dr. Smith, for any- thing unexpected that happened to your theme as we put it on paper, we'd like to make the book yours, too. DR. VERNON G. SMITH 7HlS is really a foreword to a back-word . . . a back- ward glance at our 1946-47 story. We've tried, like the makers of a popular brand of canned goods, to catch our high school experience at uthe peak of perfection and can it within these few pages-not an easy job, you'll admit. We've had to squeeze a little and leave out things, but by and large you'll f1nd inside an accu- rate record of this year's voyage of discoveryf' Some of us may still be a little sea-sick as the old ship is warped into her berth come June 20, but a few years hence most of us will be fondly recalling these happy months spent aboard S. H. S. We hope this book will help you to remember .... ,W 1 WW Eff VERNON G. SMITH, A.B.. Colby: A.M., Ed.D.. Columbia- Supcrintendcnt of Schools. LESTER VU. NELSON, A.B.. By September 8, everyone was imploring Richard to close the door. Three freshman classes fell from the third fioor to the basement, the junior High stairways had been moved around. Some new teachers and some returning to active duty from the armed forces were here to welcome us back. We discovered Miss Chamberlain newly set up in the Deans' office and Mr. Melchior, fresh from the bound- ing main, ruling the males with his firm hand. Miss Smith was next door, hidden behind a mob of junior girls, and Mr. Fogg was slated to be- come watch onicer for the junior boys as soon as reinforcements arrived to take over his English classes. Every afternoon the girls sat and watched the boys go out for football practice, Every afternoon the boys stood and watched the cheerleaders prac- tice. Also, it was amazing that all that smoke could rise from nowhere. 'Twas the flame of vic- tory, of course. After a week of book-covering, SSH seating assignments, and confusing change of course slips, came the first week-end. QBy the way, how did Midge manage to get into a study-hall full of boys and Mike?j On Friday the 13th, juan, as befitting our G.O. President, started the year off with an impromptu party. Lucinda enter- tained us the next night at her house-probably the only place in the world where there was a scarcity of girls. . The following week hurried by, with football practice and new senior cars competing for our attention, especially I-Iump's' station wagon and Dixie's bus with all the fancy buttons. As a slight break in the routine, the G.O. presented the mem- bership assembly, with john, Paul, and Bill, three absolutely irresistible reasons why everyone should spend his hard-earned money for a G.O. ticket. Friday night the Hangar opened in style to revive us after our first ten days of school. That was the night when the privileged few were allowed at the official debut of Poppie's limousine. Saturday we dragged ourselves over to Dave's dance. The 5564 question of the evening was ls your tie a Wem- bley? It knots, it twists, it crushes-but will it stain PU A P60105 by Dahl, Harper, Pond, Slouwall. The female athletes, Nan, Dip, Red, Seif, and other hardy seniors, could be seen sprinting around the hockey field or straining their weary limbs in Sugarbaker's Torture Chamber. The week ended in glory with Sally Purdy's co-ed pajama party-the girls in jeans and the boys in p.j.'s. Foofie gave a birthday party for Yogi, complete with a cake, iirecrackers, and policemen. To top it off, jack Sherwin entertained those of us who got there at Candlewood Lake. Car trouble seemed to be the main drawback, especially with Gail. In spite of that, Casanova Pond showed up in good form. There were lots of Scarsdalians at the Dan- bury Fair, too. Remember those auto races, Louis? The month ended with a hiccup at Dave Sproul's cider party. Dave and Dink provided their own high-stepping floor show. With the end of the Hrst month of study Cyes, we studiedj, we were all settled in our harnesses, set to grin and bear the weeks until vacation. This business of being a senior wasn't so bad after all. UETUBEH By the time October blew in, we were ready to hibernate for the winter. However, fire drills took us into the great outdoors, assemblies made life more bearableg Mr. Geer unscrambled our pol- itics with an explanation of current world ism's. In spite of the nasty jolt Pelham gave the Raiders in their first grid encounter, Dink's maroon tie and beret and those energetic new cheerleaders gave school spirit a big lift. Then, too, we got our first glimpse in months of Mr. Whipple, whose wavy locks we had missed around the halls. The j.V.'s started off their season on Monday, trouncing Har- rison to the delight of a large number ofisenior girls who watched breathlessly from the sidelines. A whole new month of week-ends came around fnatchj, and Paul played host night. The chocolate ice cream joke books were the hit of the brought on Allen's Barn Dance Lucy found the needle in the the first Saturday was tops, but the evening. Pbnlffi' by Dabf, Eizrlwz, Firrbrr. Hyper. Pt?.Il'jlIl.lII. Sbnzzxzfl. Elizabeth Wysor, concert star, was imported by Mr. Hubbard for an assembly and sang tall of herj to the accompaniment of suggestive eye- brows. Friday brought the Eastchester game. With cars back in circulation, everyone, except the cheer- leaders, managed to get there in time to see johnny MacD. kick off. However, the Maroon still got noisy, if disorganized, support. The low spirits caused by the rugged but thoroughly lost game were revived at the St. james dance. Swannie, our newest chanteuse, caused quite a sensation in a gorgeous evening dress. The meetings at I-Iornie's house, supposedly to arrange BANDY publicity, served as a good occasion for Snoyl, Moyer, and Iuanito to work out their vocal chords on Shanty- town. The witching hour on Halloween found most of S. H. S. Prowling around Greenacres, much to the horror of the neighbors. As the evening wore on, the various open houses, Du's and Caro- line's, found most everybody consuming great quantities of cider and having a very gay time, in spite of the plethora of policemen in the vicinity. And so, October went out on its broom. NUVEMBEH Recovering after the shock of Hallowe'en, all the girls showed up for a bang-up p.j. party at Dottie's. The party was supposedly indoors, but a surprising number of people found Foof's car a different, if 'not comfortable, place to sleep. Not that there was much sleep. The road out front was jammed all night with eager beavers from Hodg- son's stag party. Colleges seemed to have great at- tractions the next week-end, at least for Mary jane, Hornie, and Betsy at Amherst and Genie and Pat at Columbia. Our harried pedagogues got a well-deserved holiday in the form of the New York State Teachers' Conference . . . giving us a day off too! Meat-hungry Isaac Young found Al Vaccaro a tasty morsel that Saturday afternoon. Everyone went wild at Iohnny's extra point-even jack Lehr, who turned cartwheels clown the field. Monday of that gorgeous week-end found Yogi almost falling through the center of his doughnuts in an effort Photo: by Dahl, Firrlaer, Harper, Sbznwall. to be the life of the Discussion Club party. He was. Going back to school that week was made more interesting by the arrival of our senior portraits. Among numerous other obvious talents, that man Lynch could obviously take good pictures. The BANDY assembly was quite the hit of the week fmany thanks to Mr. Ryanj, with Mitch and Bandy as sandwich-munching first nighters. Esch gave with a snazzy rendition of 'lSurrender, QSur- render 33.75, that islj. Didn't jack Lehr make a dainty chorus girl, though-especially next to Lulu? The French Club went down to see i'Cyrano and absorb some French culture in the way of a really French meal at Gaby's restaurant. About sixty of the hardiest etzzdimztr, along with gour- mets Ryan, Reid, and Glendenning, created a gay atmosphere, to which some enterprising seniors added a little bon vin rouge. Spirits were dampened by our loss of the Big Game, in spite of really first-class playing, espe- cially by Snoyl and Rapid Ron. The dance at Bronxville was quite an affair with that fotball cake, the fashionable gowns Cparticularly Mary Jane's and Swannie's identical onesj, and Moyer's playing of Blue Skies. The next week-end was pretty full, what with the parties at Wahbie's and Iim's and the Dramatic Club's production of The Importance of Being Earnest -surely their best job to date and de- serving of a bigger audience. Then came that much-needed Thanksgiving vacation, ushered in by the annual Fall Sports Assembly. Rock Misenheimer started off the festivities. The dance was fine, but who was the wise guy who kept test- ing the lights downstairs? Bunny made life more beautiful with an open house. The crowning event of the evening was square-dancing in the living room and Dave's rendition of Danny Kaye. The party was pretty hectic, with numberless people dashing over to the I.H.M. dance and dropping in for a minute to hear Moyer's band and Babs give out at the tenth grade dance. Then to the turkey. The next night came one of the biggest dances of the year, 'cause this time the gals asked the guys. Life was never like this, some of the boys were even treated to carnations by their thoughtful dates. Nan and Bill were hosts. As Christmas ap- proached, everywhere argyle socks appeared in the making for some lucky blokes. As the days sped by, between shopping, knitting, and source themes, we managed to take time off to hear the Messiah beautifully staged. Friday the 13th didn't seem to bring bad luck to those of us who went to the dance up at the Y that night-except maybe Pondo, who had a pie thrown at him. The 20th found us loanng through a half day of school be- fore the vacation officially began. Little work got done, for with the caroling in the halls and the great Christmas spirit about, no one could concen- trate on Newton's laws. Christmas really started with the school dance for students and alumni. In spite of the snow and rain, everyone appeared in his best bib and tucker. The featured event was the crowning of Nancy Keane as BANDY Queen and Harriet Smith and Bobbie Martens as her attendants. The dance was a gala affair, and for days we all tried to get hold of some of those new bubbling lights for our own Christmas trees. The vacation was all a holiday should be, except for a dreadful lack of snow, however, we were so busy shopping, eating, carol- ing, ice-skating, ei al, that we hardly missed it. The Christmas Alumni Dance at the Golf Club, Hank's open house with Di as hostess, the G.C. dance on the' 28th, and all the other doinls brought on the year's last gasp in a hurry. Of all the parties on that terrific New Year's Eve, we remember es- pecially Pond's, Sherryls p.j., Liz's-and all the rest of the excitement we needed to see 1947 in properly. JANUARY After extricating themselves from various local snowbanks, everyone-well, almost everyone- grudgingly returned to school for the two days be- tween vacation and the week-end and found the Pbolor by Dalai, Firrber, Harper, Hmrlfzrfaer, Sbuwall. school offices completely jumbled. It wasn't the result of holiday dissipation, they had really been moved, and when we went in to see Miss Cham- berlain, there behind the desk was Mr. Archibald Shaw, our new Assistant Superintendent, who, we later discovered, was a sharp basketball player, Mr. Withers, also of many talents, finally showed up to take Mr. Fogg's duties. Friday finally showed up, too, and with it the annual subscription dance at the Golf Club. No subway was ever like that! So many people crowded the place that no one even noticed the gorgeous regalia-except for Peter's elegant white tie and tails. john and Rod were seen dashing madly about snapping photos for their memory book-and ours. The next week Signifer announced its new members, the largest number ever admitted at one time. By Friday night, after a week of hard work QThe college entrance ofhcers were breathing down our necksj, we were ready to relax-or some- thing-at Mitch's dance. It was a happy time, with the snow right outside fjust right for getting one's face washed, eh Bev?jg and the strong-arm tactics of Jim Fallon and Bill Beck kept out all gate-crashers. Willie's window was the only cas- ualty. In the middle of the week, to take us out of the dull, old, everyday world, came Mr. Raeger and the G.E. House of Magic. Mr. R. was later entertained at Danny's by some of the local citi- zenry. The next week was Louis' triumph, the De- Molay Dance at the Harwood Building. Though the dancing occupied most everybody, the Yale News had its share of popularity in the back room. Also sharing honors was Mare's new turtle. The next night Di gave a party. Contrary to the popular belief, it was quiet and well-ordered. As something new in the way of education, the combined choruses took a day off to attend a Fred Waring rehearsal. Everyone just had to sing on the bus to keep from freezing. Thursday also brought something new in the way of assemblies, as johnny Bothwell and three-oh so blonde-vocalists gave out to the delight of the hepcats. We hear two teachers went out for aspirin. fOne of them was heard to say, Well, I could have thought of Ted Lewis, if they'd just given me a little more timefj Friday night Milford gave a party for Bill Sperry's birthday. Among the gifts Bill received P60101 by DJH. SAYIIJZZJ-,I were a beer mug, a black leather bow tie, and as- sorted paper dolls. No stags were allowed, but somehow Dillon and Allen crept in. After cram- ming madly for Regents, blight of our lives, mid- term marks ushered in the end of the Hrst half of our senior year. FEBRUARY Moyers party for the basketball team tided us over from january thaw to February freeze. All the boys on the squad, plus their dates Qack and Beryl, Hap and Bobbie, to mention a fewj spent the evening very enjoyably munching on jack's fancy cake with VARSITY 1947 on it. The more energetic even danced.. The following week fea- tured two assemblies: a G.O. program highlighted by jack's pep talk on the new cafeteria system fWe really needed it.j and a Dramatic Club presenta- tion of The Valiant. We were pleasantly sur- prised to discover that Sherwin can really act. Looking around the audience, we noticed all the happy couples fMidge 8: Mike, Dick 8c Janice, Donn 85 Betty, Bird 8: Henstie, Don 8: Jane, and lots of othersj sitting together thanks to the new senior privilege. We also spied Stel and Rhoda proudly showing off their Florida tans, to the envy of all us palefaces. After taking the Bronxville game easily and beautifully, we took advantage of the belated snow. The Hangar had a dance, but most of the seniors could be found up at the Golf Club, skiing, tobogganing, or sitting around the big fire. After being chilled to the bone, the lucky ones trooped over to Edmonds, for some welcome hot chocolate. Abe Lincoln provided us with a day off, and joe Misenheimer celebrated with a party, those who weren't foolhardy enough to lose their money at blackjack or freeze in the snow outside, danced. Back to school after a day of rest to hear the band, which really sounds professional this year, give a preview of its coming concert. A high spot on the show was Glasel's impromptu arrangement of Tea for Two. Friday brought a heartbreaker on the court against Pelham. However, it being Valentines Day, we counted our billet! Saturday night we managed to work through the crowd at Genevieve Smith's vice-versa party, after negotiating the ''Open-the-door-Richard sign at the front en- trance. QI wonder why it is that vice-versa dances are always so much more crowded than regular ones. Could it be that Scarsdale girls are less shy than the boys?j Tuesday the 18th started something new in Scarsdale Hi-the Senior Breakfast. From 8 until 10, seniors and available faculty consumed great quantities of doughnuts, listened to Mr. Young's thought-provoking talk on colonial problems, and sang loudly, if hesitantly, Mr. Farrow's new school songs, with the help of Moyer, Hornie, and johnny G. We also discovered that it was Mr. Nelsonls 14th anniversary with the school. The whole affair made a big hit, and everyone went back to classes with high hopes for another senior breakfast soon. That afternoon the team surprised the county by defeating Eastchester on their own court for the first time in two years. Who are those Smith Bros. anyway-cough drops or some- thing? Our senior rings arrived at long last on Tues- day. Proud owners spent the day showing off their new possessions and in some cases exchanging them. On Friday the snow was so deep and invit- ing that the whole school left after a half-day ses- sion. Doc Farrow helped us improve our skiing form up at the Club. Spills and aching muscles were rife, but nothing dented-er, daunted- everyone proceeded to enjoy himself. The next week the White Plains Dramatic Club brought us an expert job of The Flattering Word as an exchange assembly. SPRING Louie greeted roaring March with an open house, celebrating Jack Hodgson? birthday. Most everyone was happyfto sit cozily around the big Hreplace while anrflwftul mixture of rain and snow was pouringi down outside. All of a sudden, the work we hudn't been doing so far began to catch up with us, and we settled down to a spring of hard work and good inten- tions. To divert us, however, popped up the Soph- omore Variety Show, featuring the Bary sisters and the Sleepless Knights under the happy direction of Magician Walt Swertfager. Occurring along with the Ides of March was the BANDY deadline. After enough nervous energy had been generated to run the presses, BANDY went triumphantly to press. The Dramatic Club production of Ceiling Zero attracted great crowds, as we went to see our favorite senior boys handsomely dressed in Air Force uniforms. Philip Kondratief came to us from Massachusetts, zm vm! chic type, and man- aged to sprain his wrist the first day. After lots of parties, the Bronxville basketball dance, and vain hopes for the Discussion Club Dance, Easter arrived. We drifted placidly through nine days of blissful nothingness until We landed-plunk-into college boards. We met the enemy and after a complete rout we settled back, a bit impatient for graduation rehearsals. . As the weather warmed up, that old feeling got us once more. When the Good Humor man came tinkling his welcome bell, we knew that Spring was here. Fancies began turning to love and other outdoor sports. We felt more like sit- ting and dreaming than doing anything else. The P. T, Afs Mikado production exhibited unex- pected talents. Mr. Lawson's, continuous QU re- hearsals of'orchestra, choruses, and soloists really made it an unforgettable show. As the last few grains run out of our senior hour glass, we pause to think about some of the things that made being a senior at S.H.S. so swell - warm lunches outdoors . . . drippy Good Humors at exciting baseball games . . . dancing to soft music at the Spring Prom . . . fighting flies and physics in study hall . . . pizza at Papa Iohn's . , excursions to New York for everything from art museums to the Circus . . . that quaking fear of Regents' and the weak-kneed relief when they are over . . . frantic seconds watching Luckie win the mile . . . Wnlzer, C THE G.O. COUNCIL got right .into the swing of things in September. First thing on the agenda was the G.O. drive which carried through with Hying colors, thanks to our able Paul. After that came an awkward pause, when the 1946 senior class gift couldn't be found, but it Hnally turned up in the form of a public address system which was put to good use all year. Amidst the age-old clamor for Senior Privileges, a committee was Hnally formed. Louis and the gang visited two other schools, decided on privileges, and generally got them okayed from all sides, Senior breakfasts drew a huge crowd in spite of their being held almost in the middle of the night Q8 A.M.j. If anyone noticed a distraught student rushing around with a pile of papers on alternate Friday mornings, it was only a G.O. representative under the ,new system of Maroon distribution, At the end of this year, both the G.O. Council and the student body want to give johnny a pat on the back for his swell, job. JUNIOR G.O. COUNCIL. . . Problems, tangles, and red tape rear their ugly heads in the Junior High School, too. You're welcome to your opinion, of course . . . sometimes it is kinda difficult for jack and Sandy to maintain order among a dozen whirling dervishes while they are trying to decide by demonstrations whether to get a good lindy or samba band. After all the fireworks, S. H. S, turns out en fmzrfe to a wonderful party-even if the males are broke for three weeks afterward. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE . . . When Bill walks out on the stage, rubs his hands together, and croons his introduction into the mike, we're always ready for a surprise. STAGE DESIGN 8: BULLETIN BOARD COMMITTEES . . . Given one wish, the Bulletin Board Committee would toss away fame and fortune if only someone would lift the restrictions on scotch tape and invent a spotted paint. We always expect to see Tom sobbing in the hall in front of a bulletin board, with a four-cornered poster and three thumb-tacks. But although scotch tape may be scarce, the decorators insist that there's no shortage of the red variety. Their favorite lament, however, is on the lack of green stuff forthcoming from Zee G.O.. Though perhaps we didn't sound like it QEh, Miss Hook?j, we really admired The Valiant, and we gripped our seats at Ceiling Zero. STAGE, LIGHTING, AND MAKE-UP . . . Lights off!!! Make-up!!! It's the effect that counts. Handling the mysterious set of equipment known only to crew members, the Lighting' Crew illumines the ebony blackness of the stage. The Stage Crew makes, sets up, and moves scenery, creating any needed atmospheric conditions fexcept rainj. To top it off, the Make-up Committee, meeting about once every two months to practice its black art, utilizes its talents in playing havoc with old familiar faces. Our backbone was Sal's defensive playing. Anne Rutherford scored for the varsity in the early minutes of the game. Scarsdale was able to tally again in the second half, with Nancy giving the last tap to the ball. It was a perfect day, as the I.V. team, captained by Nancy Seiffer and Nancy Knapp, kept pace with the first team to win 2-0. Ruthie and Iune drove the ball into the nets for Scarsdale's two tallies. - Our defensive commandos, Sal, Di, Piccot, Ellie, Cov, and Alice, gained another 2-0 victory over Pelham. Witli thirty seconds re- maining, Fieldston had knotted the score at 53-all, when Harry Lyons bagged the game with a looping mid-court shot. Halsted was snowed under, 50-37 in the local opener. Sperry and Staley inaugurated their loudspeaker announcing of home contests. Isaac Young, still smarting from its football defeat, turned the tables on the basketball Raiders 41-31. The Maroon bounced back to capture a thriller from Ardsley 32-31. Again it was Lyons who saved the game, scoring on a left-handed heave in the last ten seconds to reverse a one-point defeat. A fourteen-point splurge paced by Jack Moyer in the last four minutes stopped undefeated Hackley 42-27. It was five out of six as Briarcliff succumbed 52-34. Our three game streak was ended abruptly by Rye 37-25. The Maroon plowed over our old rivals from Bronxville, 57-27, to provide the greatest margin of victory compiled during the season. Roger Pierce worked like a conveyor belt under the basket, putting in 21 points to lead the scoring. Concordia went down 46-33. A sudden death period in the Pelham contest proved deadly to the Raiders. The Blue and White came from behind to tie up the game 26-all in the waning minutes. After one overtime period had ended in another knotted score, the Pelham center nosed out the Scarsdalians 34-32. The Eastchester Eagles had their wings clipped 38-34 in one of the big upsets of the season, as Smith Bros. Inc. suffered defeat on its own court for the hrst time in two years. Bud Renz tied things up at 19-19 in the middle of the third quarter and the Eagles were never ahead again. Ned Brown was top man with 11 points. After heavy snow cancelled the Barnard game, the Maroon ended N.Y.S.D.'s nine-game winning streak 34-33 in the most exciting game in many years. The visitors pulled away to a 4-point lead at the outset, but after that time the two teams traded one- and two-point margins right to the frnish. Bruce Carswell captured the contest with a shot that was as close as any ever was. As the final whistle blew, the ball was arching through the air for the winning M 'Y Z RWM NM. Bruce started off theiseasontia heavy scorer: but a knee injury had kept him on the bench since the Ardsley game. Pelham turned on the power in the final period to win again 34-30 in a hotly contested game on their court. SWIAC- topping Harrison added a defeat to the record 45-50. For dessert the Raiders once again polished off the Bronxville Broncos 53-41. Roger Pierce hit the high-water mark for the season with 22 points. Roger took individual scoring honors for the sea- son putting in 49 field goals and 39 foul shots for a total of 137 points. jack Moyer's shots from the sideline helped run up his 152 points. l-larry Lyons put his 117 points where they counted most. I-Iarry's mate at guard was Bud Renz, who sup' plemented his excellent team play with real offen42' La. sive drives towards the end of the season. Backing Y X up these stalwarts were John Greenwood and Ned Q7 Brown who rose to the starting lineup and the top scoring brackets to capture the N.Y.S.D. game. By virtue of their ten-won five-lost record, the team once again earned the right to enter the District 1 tournament at the County Center. The Junior Raiders were unbeatable early in the season. A 25-24 defeat by the Broncos cut the two-year jayvee winning streak at twenty games and started them on a string of three lossesg but they came back to post 11 ten-won three-lost rec- ord. With these boys moving up to Varsity next year, it looks like another line team for Scarsdalc and Coach Bill Schmidt in '48, 5-4. XVRESTLING TEAM Lvl! In riglvf - Mr. Buchanan CU.lL'h. As part of the post-war reconstruction this year, wrestling was added to the Scarsdale interscholastic agenda. Scarsdale boys were not hesitant to display the benefits of their Charles Atlas courses. Grunts and groans were heard in the gym for many weeks before the squad tangled with N. Y. S. D., its first opponent, and came out on top 55-19. Their next entanglement ended in a 22-12 defeat by Trinity. No Scarsdale man was pinned in the return match with N. Y. S. D., but in the following weeks, the brawny boys bowed to more experienced teams from Nyack and the School for the Blind. Young fellows like jimmy jiraneck, john DiModugna, Bart McNamee and Al Temple should help to make the Scarsdale team a regular activity. GOLF . . . With that old professional, Mr. Hatch, acting as coach the golf team was once more seen fanning the fairways. Prospects for the '47 season look bright as Cap- tain Bob Smith, john MacDowell, Dave Florence, jim Reed, and Phil Clark have all returned from last year's team. In '46, although a majority of the matches were rained out, the boys compiled a 2 won, 1 lost record. Smith showed himself to be the county's number one golfer, taking first place in the 1946 Westchester County Junior Cham- pionship. ' GOLF Lefl lo right-R. Smith, J. Reed P. Clark, D. Nine schools tasted defeat at the hands of the Maroon during the 1946 season. To climax a banner year, the track- men went on to establish their supremacy among all the track teams in Westchester by capturing the trophy in' the annual New York State Section One Tournament, held in White Plains. Two records were broken by the track team of 1946: Bill Neill clocked 0.22:6 in the 220, and Bob Brown fl-46j made a leap of 22 feet one and a quarter inches in the broad jump, at the White Plains tournament. The sprint section, ably coached by Mr. Steele and the liniment bottle, was well-nigh indefeatable with Bill Neil backed up by Bill Seibert and Ike Stewart Q'46j. Greg- ory Sheridan and Barry Singer handled the middle distances, Bob Luckhardt controlled the mile, tak- TRACK ing first place in the county meet. jack Lehr, john MacDowell and Dick Hill were leaders in field events. With these three, plus Luckhardt, Sheri- dan, and Singer back in the running this season, the '47 track team cannot be anything but suc- cessful. After the initial meet with Mamaroneck was cancelled, the trackmen deadlocked with Roose- velt 45-all. Eastchester was trounced 64-31. The squad traveled to Pelham on May 29 and played host to Bronxville on june 4. Last fall cross-country running came back to Scarsdale after a wartime lapse. Scarsdale joined a number of triangular meets in which Bob Luck- hardt consistently came in first. In the White Plains meet he took third. The experience of this year's rather informal schedule should help toward making a championship team next fall. CROSS COUNTRY '46. Firrl Row- Mr. Steele, Coach, T. Edwards, '46 J.
