B. HEALD ELWOOD G. BESSEY Superintendent from 1913-1946 Principal from 1918-1948 Among our past superintendents there is one man whose complete devotion to the welfare of Scarborough Schools and each child in them can never be surpassed. Supt. Franklin H. B. Heald possessed the vision, energy, and tireless perseverence of American Pioneers who gave their all. Mr. Elwood C. Bessey has a living memorial in the Junior High School which proudly bears his name. He was one of those rare teachers who inspire students with enthusiasm for learning. Thirty years of such influence becomes eternal. A well-rounded educational program needs the influence of devoted women. We have had many in the history of our schools: Louise Milliken, Lida Libby, Mabel Storey. In our high school an. outstand- ing example of unselfish devotion to her job, was Doris Hutchins Baker. Every girl in her Home Economics Department was her own. Her day was theirs. Scarborough became a better place because she taught here. Another woman. whose work enriched our lives is Sara Steele. our first music supervisor. loved by all who learned to appreciate music in her classes. The melody still lingers on. MRS.
