Reaches out to every Mother's child A TEACHER'S HEART “I know this book or that by heart, In teaching we have often said. We meant, of course, we know the book by head. Miss Storey really knows each child by heart: For teaching is to her the loving art. To stinging words in temper said She listens not, but hears instead The heartbeat of a frightened child By frustration and despair made wild. She reads his heart and sees his need And answers it—not by word or deed But by a quiet magic all her own She makes belong the child who was alone. I thought to say she has a mother's heart, But Mabel has her own, a Teachers! heart: For mothers love within their narrou scope; But Mabel's heart has ample room and hope For the child who walks unnoticed and alone. In Mabel's room he somehow rose and shone And reached a stature hitherto not gained ; A feeling for the human race attained. But Mabel's guiding love is a two-edged oar; To the child who has too much, she gives no more; Or rather gives to him the gift more rare, By teaching that he who richly has must share; That humbleness is beauty's highest role; That clothes or brains are not the fabric of a soul; That he who rides with undue pomp and pride, Had best get down awhile and share the ride. When passing sometime, see how Mabel's garden grows; It's certainly not in even patterned rows. She gives expensive seedlings no more care Than struggling little scrubs that just grow there. In fact she picks the taller, prouder one To give the scrubby plant more sun. No, Mabel's love is not a Mother's love; It's something larger, far above, That reaches out to every Mother's child, Whether carefully nurtured or just grown wild, And keeps him from being trampled in the sod And shows him how to lift his head to God.
