In this 1957 edition we have printed the record of school life using highways as a theme. Come with us as we travel down familiar roads. Our first highway is the highway of learning, Naturally you will find our faculty here, teachers who have pointed out the fascination of this ever breadéning road. We meant, of course, we know the book by head. Miss Storey really knows each child by heart: For teaching is to her the loving art. To stinging words in temper said She listens not, but hears instead The heartbeat of a frightened child By frustration and despair made wild. She reads his heart and sees his need And answers it—not by word or deed But by a quiet magic all her own She makes belong the child who was alone. I thought to say she has a mother's heart, But Mabel has her own, a Teachers! heart: For mothers love within their narrou scope; But Mabel's heart has ample room and hope For the child who walks unnoticed and alone. In Mabel's room he somehow rose and shone And reached a stature hitherto not gained ; A feeling for the human race attained. But Mabel's guiding love is a two-edged oar; To the child who has too much, she gives no more; Or rather gives to him the gift more rare, By teaching that he who richly has must share; That humbleness is beauty's highest role; That clothes or brains are not the fabric of a soul; That he who rides with undue pomp and pride, Had best get down awhile and share the ride. When passing sometime, see how Mabel's garden grows; It's certainly not in even patterned rows. She gives expensive seedlings no more care Than struggling little scrubs that just grow there. In fact she picks the taller, prouder one To give the scrubby plant more sun. No, Mabel's love is not a Mother's love; It's something larger, far above, That reaches out to every Mother's child, Whether carefully nurtured or just grown wild, And keeps him from being trampled in the sod And shows him how to lift his head to God. pa With а ез love and respect The Class of 1957 Dedicates this book to MABEL F. STOREY Princi pal 8 Messa ge When students of high school age reach this point in their journey along the broad highway of life, they are more or less prone to disregard some of the more important guide-posts es- tablished for their use in reach- Mr. Knowlen, “Industry needs boys like you. - m - - : | | : ing their desired destination. They seem to have the philosophy of the Smoky Mountain youth who had been lost and when found said, “If I were educated, I could have read the signs and then I would have known where to go.” Unlike this boy who had very meager opportunities for learning, we should determine here and now that reading the sign is a means of becoming educated rather than being edu- cated in order to follow directions. Your school, through its exploratory opportunities and its guidance, can enable you to read the signs along the way that you may choose the right direction to travel. Be alert and on the lookout for any means of guidance that can help you. It’s a waste of time to get lost and have to find your way back onto the right road. Mr. Milton Knowlen Seated: E. Lilley. Sophomore After the flurry of unscrambling class schedules and making sure the freshmen were initiated properly, we sophomores decided to settle down to a long winter's study only to find ourselves swept into the whirlwind of activities that highlight each school year. Being an active class, sophomores are often seen in musical activities, on athletic teams, at club meetings, on detention, at the occupational file, and sometimes even studying. With two down and two to go we'll find the road ahead lighted by the bright promise of a shining future at S.H.S. and beyond .. . “What happened at 105 North Tower? The Freshmen Reception and Dance, the first social event of the year, gave both students and parents a chance to get acquainted. Sophomores sent invitations to all frosh parents and prepared refreshments for three hundred, parents, kids, and faculty. The trophy for first place in Triple “C” competition, among other victories and individual honors, such as medals and ribbons are notable signs of its power and balance. The trophy was gained through the outstanding performances of such members as Albie Harmon and Hans Eichhorn. Both of them were very dependable point winners at every meet. Harmon won a gold medal in the 100 yard dash at the state meet while Hans was always strong competition in the shot put and could be counted on for necessary points. Other dependables William LeTarte, William Fogg, and Fred Bayley put in commendable performances in the high jump, javelin and discus respectively. But make no mistake, everyone who participated was indispensable, and the loss of any would have meant defeat. Our special thanks to coach Bob Southworth who tutored every member with endless patience and helpful pointers. Baseball Coach Robert Schaare's baseball players produced a record to be desired by any school. Bruce Thurlow, Arlo Pike, and Ray Smith were the big guns in help- ing us to attain our 8 won and 3 lost record. Ray's batting average was exceptional and Arlo ran a close second in making our opponents “shake in their shoes. Bruce, pitching with the potential power of a big leaguer, was the mainstay of our defense. The ability of these three, together with the team- work and support furnished by the rest of the team, made our record possible. RECORD SHS ОРР. SHS ОРР. The high points of the season came in the games with the Capers and the Freeport Falcons, which we lost by narrow margins.
