How we cringed at the doorways back in 19-16 as we waited for the bell that would signal the start of our high school career. When that bell sounded and we had entered, we found Sayville High grossly different from the stories we had heard. Each little niche in the walls soon became friendly and familiar to our inquisitive eyes. Even the staggered system , not without some difficulty, became second nature. So thoroughly were we engrossed in our new held of activity that we scarcely noticed the approach of Freshman Day. Then, one day just before the doors opened, we were greeted with shouts and menacing looks. Soon everything went red, and we were cov- ered with hard-to-get-off lipstick. All through the day a good-natured emphasis was placed upon our position in life. Then, with the singing of the Alma Mater, we became citizens of Sayville High, and were welcomed with open arms. Our sophomore year is one to he remembered. Our tirst achiev ement was the presentation of a soph- omore skit in which talented tfl performers soon had the audience in side-splitting laughter. This. too. was the tirst year that we won Class Night. giving us the start towards permanent pos- session of the banner. Using Holidays as our theme. we sent out a winning parade. Our junior year was an ideal year: we were old enough to enjoy the pastimes ot upper-classmen, yet were too young to receive a large amount of respon- sibility. Class Night 1948 was a howling success. Our parade of Advertisements contained everything but the kitchen sink. We couldnt rind a kitchen sink so we used a second-hand bathtub. The judges' de- cision tied us with the Class of '-49. Perhaps one of the more important of our junior activities was the Blotter, Each year's staff seemed to improve over the last. Our executives did not break the custom when they gave the old paper a new lease on life. The Columbia Convention moved it up one whole place in its annual rating. The most colossal undertaking of this year was the junior Prom. Our troubles first began with the decorations. Between tying up streamers and lugging pianos, we were barely able to finish in time. When dance time arrived, we were much too tired to dance, and would have been perfectly content to crawl off into a corner to sleep. The dance was a success. and everyone went away with a lighter heart. Even the committees found their second wind and had a won- derful time, too. 5 lj N l O R O F F l tl ll li S Our representatiy es to Boys' and Girls' State were chosen this year to attend their respective organiza- tions for a week during summer vacation. There they learned the true meaning of American democracy. They returned with a better idea of good citizenship, as could be seen when they were heard in assembly. Our fourth year in high school was the most satisfying. both in work and fun. 'I he tirst appear- ance ot' this work-fun combination began with the casting of the senior play. Over one third of the senior class showed up on the tryout night. Each candidate was asked to read the standard lines sev- eral times. Then the judges picked the cast of twelve and announced the results. Hurrayf Hurrayf I have a part in the senior play! Hal If only they could have seen what was to come! Rehearsal at seven: get out at eleven fmaybel. During the whole procedure little grem- lins flitted this way and that, upstage and down. carrying light bulbs, wire, tape, noisy-when-dropped hammers, and all the rest of the usual stage para- phernalia. Their purpose was twofold: first, to dis- tract the playersg second. to arrange the stage. We appreciate the hard work and patience of our directors in putting over this production and in put- ting up with us. The play itself centered about the comic antics of two very comic characters: Craig, the smart one, and Fitz. the dumb one. These two tried to solve the mystery of a stolen necklace. Things were com- plicated still further when it was learned that it was not the necklace that was stolen after all, but only its paste replica. Through it we accumulated enough money to cover our graduation expenses. Although a lot of credit goes to the campaign man- agers, the individual salesmen deserve their share. Another senior activity is the yearbook. This is an extremely active activity. and extends throughout the year. However, though it is time consuming and hard work, it is not entirely devoid of fun, for any of its members will tell you they had a good time, especially in the search for an original theme. The yearbook is the summation and record of all BUYS' KNIT Cilllli' S'I',X'l'l'Q our activities, and therefore one to be appreciated and valued for years to come. The senior prom and banquet will be a great success if it is to follow in the path of our other activities. There, gowns and tux will meet in our final high school project. As the last of the Mohicans drags himself home, we can settle down and rest. Then, as we begin an eight-hour day, hve days a week, or go on to college, we will find that we have slowed down tremendously. We will realize that those four years in S.H.S. were the fastest and most fun-packed years we ever spentg and they are gone . . . gone forever! 5lAG.XZlNE lflil l'.Xlt'iN .ll.XN.Xt1IiIQ5 YF.XlQl3f'lf'lli S'lfXFl7 IIYNIOR CI or1fIc'1iRs PM XPJIW ty D mm H-:38 1 We, the Class of '51, have finally reached the top-almost. In our third year we showed versatility in all of our activities. There was a generous sprinkling of juniors on the honor roll every marking period, and, just to prove that the class is not a group of braintrusts, seven of the ten varsity basketball players were juniors. It was through the hard work of the juniors on the Blower staff that the paper achieved a somewhat higher rating with the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Our junior Prom was a huge success. The pub- licity and ticket committees deserve a lot of credit for getting the good crowd together. The gym was transformed into a ballroom by the industrious de- corating committee, and the refreshments were good and plentiful. We feel that Class Day was a memorable event in our third year. Our theme, Television, brought us many well-deserved laughs-and second placeg but, we got tirst place in cheering, Witll these achievements to our credit, we can not fail to be a super senior class. As the first half of our high school career comes to a close, we look over the past and find that we haven't fared too badly. In fact, we have learned a lot by our mistakes. Our capable president, Bill, is known by his crew- cut and his rather large feet. Vin, our vice-president, may be recognized by his sleepy look. Carol and Butch, our secretary and treasurer, personify the noisy and quiet sides of our class respectively. The sophomore Class Day theme was Past, Present, and Future. We didn't come off with hon- ors, but we didn't hit the bottom either. Both our basketball teams won a split second and third place. In the parade Tony Perry and Margie created quite a sensation as Adam and Eve in fig leavesg and L-141'-1 Carmen Del Moral's pet goat, Kathy, was also a big hit. The soph boys, with a year's experience behind them, made up the largest part of the j.V. teams in basketball and football and several even made varsity. The soph girls went out for sports in a big way and provided tough competition in all intramural contests. The girls on the J. V. cheering squad also deserve credit for their fine team. No matter what activity was going on in S.H.S., you were bound to find sophomores active in one way or another. In chorus, Library Club, Blotter, band, orchestra, and other clubs, we were always on the job. THE FRESHMAN CLASS OFIIICEKS I 1 t Bruce t X I leni Anlta Bexalc 5 t . Qarol L. U T Dnrotlmy Scllu I Q-a429-5 As freshmen we entered the Sayville High portals, looked upon as lower than ordinary mortals. We greeted Freshman Day with disdainful snorts, but the upperclassmen found us to be good sports. In schoolwork many of us began to excel, and the honor roll we quickly helped to swell. The clubs with frosh were soon overflowing, even a new Literary Club was growing. In social events, we rated quite high, that we were popular, we modestly imply. In noon-time dancing, we did the jitterbug, we jolly frosh sure 'cut a mean rug. In sports our boys upheld our honor, our girls, too, made each opponent a goner. On Class Day in last place ended our theme, al- though it was hot stuff with tire and steam. Our cheerleaders were peppy and filled with vim, we caused a near riot in the old Sayville gym. The frosh played rather well on the floor, but both teams came out at the low end of the score. Then came june with its graduation. The seniors went 'round in a state of agitation. The juniors couldn't wait for the year to end, so that they could follow in the seniors' trend. The sophs to their second year bade a reluctant farewell, then looked ahead-being up- perclassmen sure would be swell. But we frosh went around chipper and cheerful, looking back on a happy, successful yearful, We still have three more years of fun. Our service clubs consist of the Library Club, whose members man our rapidly growing library, the Secretaries' Club, which helps the principal: and the Seventh Grade Girls' Service Club, which fur- nishes retreshments for Social Hours and teachers' meetings. The musical organizations-junior Band, junior Orchestra. and junior High Chorus have been busy working. and enjoying themselves at the same time. The newly organized Art Club has made a ten foot mural of points of interest in Sayville. The Camera Club and Girls' and Boys' Sports Clubs were as popular and active as usual. The junior Red Cross has had a very busy year making favors, menu covers, and filling Easter bas- kets for the Veterans' Hospital in Northport. Their snappy uni- forms and tricky baton handling have been one of the highlights of our bands participation at football games and parades. Many of the twirlers are Sayville products, in training since grammar school days. SENIOR BANuiPride of the Purple and Gold, which the members wear with such distinction, is the Senior Band. Thanks to fair weather, they marched snappily in the Armistice and Memorial Day pa- rades and thrilled the football crowds with their performances on the Held. Under the direction of Mr. Van Schaick, they gave the usual fine concerts for the townsfolk. The winter concert is most popular and the Twilight Concert, given on the steps of the school in june, is a delightful event looked forward to by the community. At this time Mr Van , as he is fondly called by his pupils, re- views the records of the graduating members and bids them farewell. Practice makes perfect is an old adage, but in this case its truth is borne out by the fact that these students give their instruments a workout twice a week besides putting in long hours of rehearsals before public programs. Their enthu- siasm is contagious, and although we hate tp brag, a finer looking high school band is hard to find. lNl'lXl2D C1-ronrfs - The high school is justly proud of this representative group of picked voices. The Christmas program and other special assemblies are built around the sing- ing of this group. Many of its members are chosen for the All State Music Festival. The results of Miss Davison's untiring instruc- tion plus the diligent practicing of these songsters are shown at the May concert which is always popular and well attended by the community. BOYS' Guan CLUB-This year, as every year, perhaps you have heard the clear mel- lowness of familiar music, echoing through the halls of Sayville High School. These were the energetic voices of our potential Pinzas, who were learning to cultivate their voices. They had several public appearances to their credit this year. ALL-STATE FEsT1VAL-Sayville was repre- sented in all three of the music groups in the All-State Music Festival at Bay Shore. The Festival lasted two days, during which three three-hour practices, a dance, and a concert were held. The concert was pre- sented in the Bay Shore High School audi- torium on Saturday, November 5, at 8:15. Those who were fortunate enough to take part in this rewarding project, enjoyed it very much, it truly was an unforgettable pleasure. CONDL'F'l'lNG 1Q'LL'l5 G. O. Ol I'It'I'RS CiliNliIi.XI. O. held a noon-hour dante with an admission ol' ten cents a person to buy the latest popular music. The G. O. sponsored a yittory dance which was enjoyed by all those who attended. '-1525: LIBRARY CLUB-You have probably noticed the at- tractive bulletin board in the library, which is changed each month. This is planned and made by the members of the library club, who also make the book lists for class use. Essentially a service club, it also stimulates these girls' interests in library work as a career. JUNIOR RED CROSS-The junior Red Cross distrib- uted and collected, this year, ten Christmas gift boxes which were filled by various homerooms and sent overseas. The annual membership campaign netted S5290 from Sayville High. Much of the work for the year consisted of making articles for the Veterans' Hospital in Northport. The girls en- joyed working for the hospital as it gave happiness to those receiving the articles. FRESHMAN LITERARY CLUB-This newly formed club, with enrollment of thirty-four freshmen, met on alternate Wednesday's at three o'clock. The pur- pose of this club was for pleasure and growth in ap- preciation of fine literature in song and story, through the use of records, slides, hlms, special book reports, and reading. ,Good movies, plays, and radio pro- grams held a place in the plans of the year's meet- ings. Programs are planned by the executive com- mittee, made up of ofticers of the club. RIFLE CLUB-The Rifle Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Sellman, has had one of its most successful years. This club holds weekly meetings in the base- ment of the junior high building, where a rifle range has been built. These meetings are for practice towards the ranks of marksman and sharpshooter. At several of the meetings refreshments were served and plans are being made to hold a shooting carnival, which promises to be a novel and interesting event. PROJECTION SQUAD-You have probably seen them wound up in miles of film while practicing for their performances. Wfe call them the projection squad. Perhaps you have called them other things when the screen went blank or the sound stopped. However, it was their patience and know-how that brought us those entertaining and educational movies through the year, and we should be proud of these men behind the lensf' LTODEL RAILROAD CLIJB-W'ith Mr. Van Schaick as engineer a group of young railroaders have met weekly under the title of The Model Railroad Club. The most noteworthy project of the year has been the construction of a miniature model railroad system in the clubrooms in the junior high school building. Once a month the fathers have been in- vited to attend an evening meeting and have given the boys some assistance in their construction work. The newest additions to the equipment are a locomo- tive and five freight cars. THiS BLOTTER-Sayville High's leading news- paper. the Bfolfer. has completed another year of publication. On the days the paper came out, hall traiiic was often slowed down almost to a standstill. Nobody could see where he was going, for every- body's nose was buried knee-deep in this popular newspaper. The Blotter is fast becoming a Sayville High tradition. The members of the Bfffffer staff have added another very successful year to the con- tinuance of this tradition. The present stafif of the paper has given the Iifffffer a new face. This was done by banning the gossip columns and replacing them with sports stories and actual news. This change has given the Blotter a better rating with the C.S.P.A. Also, a variety of contests was offered in each issue. Last year's baby picture contest, formerly featuring members of the faculty, now includes students as well. The sports department gave us full coverage on every game Sayville played. A complete digest of past, present, and future news appeared on page one. The editorials and feature columns were always well written. This year, as last, the Blolfer was well represented at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an or- ganization to help school papers with their problems. On Thursday and Friday, the groups heard lectures and attended open forums designated to help over- come specihc problems. The editors and associate editors attended the convention Saturday. Their day c 'lminated in a big dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria, where they heard the president of Columbia Uni- versity, General Eisenhower, speak. CHEERLEADING - F-I-T-E Either in the gym or on the field the peppy cheerleaders in gold led the spec- tators in organized cheers and inspired the teams to many victories. The cheerleaders practiced faith- fully, worked up several new cheers, and incorporated the flip, cartwheel and split into some of their orig- inal cheers. The jayvee cheerleaders in their gold blouses and purple skirts did a splendid job of lifting the morale of the jayvee teams and keeping the spectators in the spirit. The two teams participated in com- bined team cheers during the varsity games. VARSITY CLUB-You can always tell a Var- sity Club member by his flashy jacket of purple and gold. The meetings of this club all seem to center around one phrase, What can we sell them next?,' Each member is a high-pressure salesman with a truckload of pins to sell. The presentation of these pins was a smooth, profitable business venture. Their annual Varsity Dance also showed good management. This exclusive organiza- tion of Sayville High lettermen has contrib- uted generously to our good times of 1950. Gmrs' SPoRTs CLUB-G.S.C. is the back- bone of girls' sports in Sayville High. This organization was responsible for the candy and popcorn machines which were an added attraction at games. The club enrolled over thirty-five girls, whose busy activities con- sisted of the selling of pencils and basketball pins, decorating the Christmas tree, and sponsoring their annual dance. The flashy jackets and sweaters that are worn by the girls are obtained only after earning 300 points. This year the members received pins, and went on a trip to Coney Island. SPAN1sH CLUB-The Spanish Club is a little-pub- licized group which meets every Monday noon in Room 22. It is made up of the few students taking third-year Spanish. Their purpose in organizing this club was to learn more about Spanish and Latin American customs, culture, and geography. They were helped in their study of customs and culture by going to see the movie of the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Cervantes, which was shown last fall at Hofstra College. For the geography part they have drawn maps of Spain and Latin America. CAm'RA CLVB - This year our Camera Club, due to lack of space. has been limited as to members. How- ever. the human interest snaps of many sports and school affairs taken during the year give us a per- manent rexvard and supply many of the pictures used in this yearbook. The club members develop and print their own pictures and now have added an enlarger to their equipment. PosT12R CI.1'B - Have you ever wondered who made those good-looking posters that you've seen around telling you where to go in case of a fire drill and showing the latest data on what's doing in Sayville High? The answer is the Poster Club. This service organization meets by a staggered arrangement ac- cording to the amount of work to be done and has as its members all those who know how to draw and like to work. Book CLUB-This year, for the first time, there has been a book club for the juniors interested in literature. Under Mrs. Huge1meyer's supervision, the club meets every Monday in the library. The members of this new activity have made a study of great books, commencing with the Bible and in- cluding Greek mythology, old plays, and modern plays. During the Week, each member reads a book or section of a book which he shares with the rest on Monday. Other mornings we would just sit and tell stories. A great deal was accomplished this way. Grabbing the lead in the tirst quarter, 11-10, they held this one-point budge until the half, 20-19. The Flashes surged ahead by ten points in the third quarter, 54-24. The final period developed into a foul shooting contest, but the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Sayville maintained this lead through to the buzzer to win 52-41. Savvrcriz is L1No12NHiiRsr 56-lN'fuch tension arose in the S.H.S. gym when Lindenhurst, said to be the best in the league, encountered Sayville. They were extremely overrated as was shown by the thrash- ing which they took from the Flashes, Sayville had Lindy playing their brand of ball, which was the main reason for their downfall. Wasting no time, the Ealesmen reeled off a 26-12 halftime lead. In the second half, Sayville continued to drive, and at the third quarter the Bulldogs trailed by 23 points, 44-21. Coach Eales substituted freely in the final period, but the margin of victory remained high. Geoghan with 21 points, A. Van Wy'en with 11, and Stevenson with 10 points were the offensive mainstays. 4-60 S.n'v11.I.1z 52, NoR'rHPoRT 42 -Northport, playing host to the Sayville High quintet, received a 52-42 defeat. They were unable to get any closer, however, and Sayville won, going away 52-42. Geoghan again was high man with 17 points, followed by johnny Hussnater with 11 markers. Sayville broke this tie when, led by Alvin Van Wy'en, they climbed to a 51-24 half-time lead. The second half of the game de- veloped into a rout as Smithtown was only able to score 16 points in 16 minutes playing time. The Ealesmen never cooled off, however, winning the game easily. Geoghan paced the scorers with 20 points and Alvin Van Wfyen followed closely with 18 points. At the three-quarter mark, Sayville led 41-23, attaining this edge on the shoot- ing of Geoghan and Hussnater. The Wildcrats mus- tered a real rally in the waning minutes of the game, but could not overcome their early deticit. Huss- nater played beautiful ball in this game, both on offense and defense. Savvrruz 66 Sarlrr-rToxv'N 56-Sayville played host to the Smithtown Indians and promptly routed them by a 66-36 score. In the tinal quarter, with most of the first stringers sitting it out, Roy Pfieffer took up where they left off and hit for 6 points. A. At the half, the Flashes increased this lead to 29-22. Little trouble was encountered by the Ealesmen in main- taining this lead until the tinal minutes. Sayville got hot and, by scoring 29 points in 8 min- utes, averaged almost four points per minute of play- ing time. With this streak under their belts and also with a 21-point bulge to enjoy, the Flashes coasted to an easy victory. With a record of seven wins and seven losses they fought extremely hard in all their games. In the way of prospects for next year's varsity there are several members of the squad who were particularly out- standing. If they continue to progress in their playing ability they will be most valuable to the varsity squad next year. FRESHMAN BAsK1sTBALL -The freshman basketball team won six games and lost six in an average sea- son. Playing together for the first time, they were organized into a rather smooth-working quintet under the direction of Coach John Varyzer. The boys acquired valuable experience under game conditions, and many of them will probably form the core of our varsity team in a year or two. TR.-Xlfli AND FIELD Despite the loss of valuable seniors, Coach Case assembled a winning track team last spring. To till the shoes of those who graduated came john Hor- vath and Bill Carpino, who dominated the weight events, Dick and Alvin Van Wfyen, who showed great improvement in the pole vault, and the Vander- borgh twins in the high jump. In the running events, Ravenhall, Gradischer, Kenyon, Longman, - 1 Bunting, and Ralph Boniberger proved worthy com- petition for the opponents. In the hrst dual meet of the year Sayville met Bellport and emerged victorious by a score of 75-29. John Horvath coppegl hrst place in both the shot-put and the discus throw. Rod Stoll also looked very impressive in winning the 100 yard clash in 10.4 seconds. The Flashes completely dominated the field events, holding Bellport to one point, a third place in the high jump. The Purple and Gold trackmen next traveled to Babylon for a triangular meet with Bay Shore and Babylon, emerging victorious with the final score ot Sayville 69, Bay Shore 41, and Babylon 19. High- lights in this meet were Rod Stoll's double win in the 100 yard dash and the broad jump, Horvath's second double win in succession in the discus and shot-put, and Buddy Kenyon's victory in the quarter mile. In the third meet the Flashes again ran into little opposition as they trounced Amityville by a score of 78-26. Sayville captured ten first places as opposed to two firsts by Amityville. Horvath continued his winning way with the shot-put and set a new school record in the discus throw of 135 feet IM inches. Stoll won the 100 and 220 yard dashes and Clarence Vanderborgh cleared 5 feet 6 inches in the high jump to take Hrst place. Northport, as the next opponent, was promptly routed by the score of 86-19. Rod Stoll again rolled up a double win in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. but the thrill of' the day was provided by Ralph Boni- berger. a younger brother of Gene. who captured the mile run in 4 minutes 59.6 seconds. Another sur- prise occurred in this meet, when Bill Carpino broke john Horvaths monopoly in the weight events by tossing the shot-put -i6'5 . In the County Relays, the Purple and Gold speed- sters captured a first place in the shuttle hurdles, and third place in the mile relay. Sayville finally met its match in a very stubborn Huntington team, and when the results were tabu- lated, the meet ended in a dead heat, 52-52. Al- though Huntington coppd seven first places to Say- ville's five, we collected enough seconds and thirds to tie the score. Clarence Vanderborgh cleared 5 feet 11 inches in the high jump, the highest recorded this year. john Horvath regained his prestige by winning the shot-put and discus throw. Buddy Kenyon and Charley Broere gained important vic- tories in the hurdles and the quarter mile, respec- tively. Sayville lost the pole vault for the tirst time this year as Alvin Van Wfyen placed third behind two Huntington men. The final meet was a triangular affair with Port jefferson and Patchogue. Sayville bounced back from a tie the previous week to another impressive win. The scores were Sayville 67, Port jefferson 4-i, and Patchogue 18. ln this meet Buddy Kenyon was beaten for the first time in the -i-40 yard run by Clark of Port jefterson. TRACK TFM1 Clarence Vanderborgh was the only double win- ner for Sayville, sharing the victory in the high jump with his brother Bob, and also winning the broad jump. Charlie Broere starred in the hurdles, winning this event in fast time. This meet closed out the regular season for the Flashes, who had only a tie in one meet to mar their record. In the post-season County Championships, Sayville again emerged victorious, the final score being Say- ville S5-2 3, Huntington 36-5 6, Babylon 25, Bay Shore Zi Riverhead 24, Port jefferson 17, and Patch- ogue 17. Charlie Broere ran a superb race in the hurdles. setting a record of 23.9 seconds. john Hor- vath also excelled in the weight events, winning both the shot-put and the discus throw with Bill Carpino taking second place in both. Rod Stoll, Clarence Vanderborgh, Alvin and Dick Van Wy'en also collected seconds in their respective events. FOOTl5.Xl.l. SQI HND FOOTBALL SAvviLLu 13 PORT jisFF12RsoN 6-Sayville Highs victory drought, which included seven straight grid- iron defeats, ended as a small but potentially slick Purple and Gold squad picked up a 13-6 win over Port Jefferson. Sayville was struck with game jitters throughout the first half, but then they started and held Port jefferson scoreless until the last five min- utes of the game. Perry and Hussnater combined to make Sayville's first touchdown, with runs of 18 and 32 yards apiece, Perry scoring. The second touch- down was scored by a Van Wyen to Hussnater pass. The extra point was kicked by Hussnater. Carpino, Kaan, Hussnater, Perry, and Corrado played out- standing games. BAY SHORE 41 SAYVILLE 7-The Purple and Gold football forces were handed a decisive setback in a game that shaped up as a close fight. The maroon capitalized on a blocked punt for two quick points, added a six-pointer on a nice pass play, and inter- cepted a Sayville pass early in the second phase to take a 16-0 lead. Midway through the period an- other interception made it 22-O, with the locals rally- ing for a six-pointer. Tony Perry scored for Sayville on an 18-yard plunge and Hussnater kicked the extra point. Others who stood out on the Sayville team were Carpino, Kaan, and Broere. PATCHOGUE 36 SAYVILLE 6-Patchogue got off to a hasty start when Sanwald scored on an end run. The P.A.T. was missed. On the kickoff Sayville ad- vanced to the Patchogue 35 on a series of downs, but Patchogue equalized this with a drive which was stopped on the Sayville 25-yard line. The quarter ended with Patchogue leading 6-O. In the second quarter Patchogue sustained a drive deep into Say- ville territory, resulting in another T.D. for San- wald. This time Miles converted successfully, mak- ing the half-time score 13-0. Magadine climaxed a drive from the 20-yard line, Miles made the P.A.T., and the score was 20-0. After receiving the kickoff, Sayville fumbled on their own 20 yard line. Patch- ogue capitalized on this break when Reams drove over from the 7-yard line and Miles converted. Say- ville avoided a shut-out, however, when Broere made a sensational 80-yard sideline run for a T.D. The uarter ended with Patchogue ahead 27-6. In the final quarter Patchogue collected nine more points on a line plunge, a conversion, and a safety. Unable to stop the offense or defense of the Red Raiders, Sayville ended up on the short end of a 36-6 score. Charlie Broere was the offensive star, while Carpino and Kaan played nice defensive ball. SAYVILLE 14 LINDENHURST 14-Two win-hungry elevens battled to a 14-14 tie in an exciting tilt played on the Lindenhurst field. Lindenhurst scored first, but the Sayville team, which had gained one triumph in three starts, came back with a pair of touchdowns to take the lead at intermission. Bob Corrado went for one of Sayville's touchdowns on a pass from Van Wyen. The second touchdown was made by Broere on a 24-yard run. Hussnater kicked both extra points. Following a scoreless third pe- riod, the Bulldogs countered with a six-pointer and a disputed extra point to tie the score on the second play of the final stanza. Those whose playing brought applause were Broere, Hussnater, Corrado, Kane, Kaan, and Carpino. AMITYVILLE 25 SAYVILLE 6-Scoring in every quarter, a previously winless Amityville High eleven defeated the Purple and Gold 25-6, on the winning team's field. The crimson scored in the first period and made it 13-0 in the second quarter, but Sayville bounced back for a score of their own late in the same period, and it was still a ball game at the in- termission. After the rest period, however, the home team scored the clincher, and added one for good measure during the final stanza. The Sayville score was made by Hussnater on two consecutive line plunges. Broere and Kaan also played creditable games. SAYVILLE 19 BABYLON 19-This was a see-saw game, with Babylon bringing in the first score, 7-0, in the first quarter. Sayville evened the score early in the second quarter, but Babylon came up with another T.D., missing the P.A.T., and the score at halftime was 13-7. The third quarter started, Huss- nater intercepted a pass, and Dick Van Wyen plunged over. Hussnater's kick was wide and the score re- mained even at 13-13 at the quarter. In the last quarter Babylon again passed for a touchdown. The P.A.T. was missed and the score was in favor of Babylon, 19-13. Sayville received, and with the ball at midfield with only a little over a minute to go, Tony Perry broke loose and outran the whole Babylon team, tying the score 19-19. Hussnater's plunge for the P.A.T. was short, and the game ended with Babylon throwing some futile passes. On offense, Perry was the bright spot, and on defense, Huss- nater, Carpino, and Kaan shone. J. xi SQUAD HUNTINGTON 32 SAYVILLE 0 - Sayville closed their season by bowing to Huntington, who by virtue of the win copped the Section One Title. Sayville drove down to Huntington's 9-yard line before they were stopped, and Huntington advanced as far as Sayville's 5-yard line before they fumbled. After a punt, Huntington drove for a score. In the second quarter, Huntington again scored, making it 12-0. Sayville received, was forced to kick, and Hunting- ton intercepted a pass and again struck pay dirt, mak- ing it 19-0. In the third quarter both offenses were ragged, and after Corrado intercepted a Huntington pass, Sayville moved as far as the Huntington 45. They were forced to kick and the strong Huntington aggression scored again on a pass play. The P.A.T. was good, which made the score 32-0. Sayville started moving on a Corrado-Hussnater pass, which brought them down to the 32-yard line. But with an intercepted pass on the Huntington 20, Hunting- ton was off and driving as far as the Sayville 15. A field goal was wide. Hussnater, Carpino, Kaan, and Perry were good on defense. Corrado and Hussnater looked good on offense. JAYVEE FOOTBALL-The jayvee football team ex- perienced an average season this year-winning one game, tying three, and losing three. Quite a few promising players developed, and are slated for var- sity action next year to replace graduating varsity players. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL-Freshman football this year was a disappointment. Five games were scheduled but the final game was cancelled when all but six boys failed to come to practice. Credit should be given to W. Mallins, M. Carter, F. Zahradka, C. Baldwin, G. Verspoor, and F. Ryder for their in- terest from the first to the last day of practice. .A 5'2 ISASIJISAI. Handicapped this year by the loss of almost every veteran letter man, Coach Wenk had one of his most dithcult jobs of developing a new team. The only regular varsity man back this year was john Neyssen, ace shortstop and pitcher. Around Neyssen Coach XVenk built up his team with the aid of Yonda, Huss- nater, and Watt, sub-varsity men of last year. A good catcher and batter was developed in the person of Tony Perry. W'ith an almost completely rookie team, the Purple and Gold started the season destined to end up at or near the bottom of the league. Sayville proved to be the biggest surprise in the league by ending the season in second place. Sayville gave the '-a66'-'a I., South Huntington team a real run for first place right through the season. The Purple and Gold started the season by playing four non-league games in a row with Central Islip, Bay Shore, Port jefferson, and Islip. Sayville slaughtered Central Islip in the hrst game of the season 12 to 5. Wfatt, a veteran varsity man, starred in this game both in right held and at bat. With Gordon's perfect pegs to home and outstand- ing batting, Sayville easily copped the first game. Then came the Bay Shore game which Sayville lost 4 to 0. In the third game against Port jefferson, Sayville racked up a thrilling triumph under the six-hit pitch- ing of John Neyssen. 'tony Perry led the Purple and Gold's batting attack with three well-tagged hits against the No-Hit Bronquell. This game was decided by Tony Yondals bunt in the eighth inning which drove in the winning run. The hnal score was 5 to 4. In the fourth game of the season Sayville beat Islip by the score of 5 to 2 after going nine innings to do it. Hartford and Trefeny took over the pitch- ing duties. The winning run was scored when Bene- dict, a pinch-hitter, struck out but got to first when the catcher dropped the ball. He stole second, went to third on a ground out and went home on a passed ball. Sayville defeated Northport in the opening league contest 9 to 5, behind the ace pitching of john Neyssen. The Sayville nine took over Smithtown in the second league game, 5 to 3, in ten innings. After a bad first inning in which Smithtown scored all three of their runs, Sayville settled down and held Smithtown scoreless for ten innings. Neyssen and Wfatt, with two hits each, and Hussnater with timely doubles paced Sayville's attack. Sayville lost their first league game to South Hun- tington by a score of 3 to S. Sayville put up a good fight, but bouth Huntingtons hitting power was a little too strong for Sayville. Sayville again came into the winning column by beating Lindenhurst 2 to 0. In the next game, Sayville really trounced all over Northport by beating them for the second time by the score of 8 to 2. Johnny Neyssen really starred in both pitching and at the bat. He knocked out two homers and two doubles in four trips to the plate. joe Richter, Tony Yonda, and joe Mallins also hit long blasts going for doubles and triples. Sayville defeated Smithtown for a second time also by the score of 3 to O in an excellent game under the pitching of john Neyssen. Sayville lost the next league game to South Hun- tington by a score of 8 to 1, but came back by win- ning the last game of the season against Lindenhurst by a score of 5 to 3. joe Mallins copped the individual batting trophy with a high batting average. joe kept up the average by hitting steadily all season and coming through in tight pinches with timely singles and doubles. Sayvilles last win over Lindenhurst put them in sole possession of second place with five wins and three losses. The jayvees had an average season last spring, winning two games and dropping the same number. The boys were in there fighting, however, and quite a few promising players are developing into varsity material this year from the jayvee squad. B.XSEl5.Xl.li SQVAD 'M 'ai CROSS COUNTRY Ralph Boniberger, jerry Bunting, Guy Stoye, Alan Ravenhall, james Conkle, Franklin Bernard, Dave Grun, and Bill Goggins were the harriers for Say- ville High this year. As a whole the team had a poor season. The first meet was held at Amityville. Sayville placed third behind South Huntington and Amityville respectively. The second meet was held at Sayville, where the Golden Flashes lost to their opponent, Bellport, by a score of 22-35. The Golden Flashes took second place in the triangular meet at Sayville. The rival schools were Bay Shore and Huntington. Bay Shore was first with a score of 35 points, Sayville second with a score of 44, followed closely by Huntington with 416 points. The Sayville team travelled to Port jefferson for the final meet of the season. The Port jefferson runners turned in a top notch performance on their home course. The results were as follows: Port jefferson first with 60 points, and Sayville third with 68 points. At the County Meet held at Port jefferson, Guy Stoye was the first Sayville man, placing 38th. Spas-4 if GIR TENNIS-Although last spring was the first season of tennis at Sayville High School the courts were crowded with eager girls. It was not long before they were handling their racquets with assurance. The girls hope that with a little more training they will be able to give any outside teams pretty stiff competition. If they continue to be as conscientious about their practices, we are sure that Sayville will have a team worthy of praise. SOFTBALL-Take perfect teamwork, good sports- manship, and the will to win, put them all together and you have the undefeated Sayville girls' softball team. Our potential Babe Ruths played four op- posing teams, including Bay Shore, Central Islip, East Islip, and Babylon. Babylon was also undefeated until Mrs. Kress' prides-and-joys stepped in to show them who was who. A team such as this is one Sayville High can be proud of. SOCCER - Plenty of fight was shown in the first sport of the season, soccer. We saw spritely figures run- LS'SP ORTS ning to and fro on the field, kicking that soccer ball around with especially vigorous enthusiasm. Four class teams were chosen and the competi- tion was exceedingly stiff. The team that emerged victorious. with bruised arms and legs and socks blackened from the muddy ground. deserved the glory fully. l7Il2LD Hociqiai' -Wfant to test your speed, skill and co-ordination? Then come on out for girls' field hockey. This year the girls played six games, one practice game, two league games, and three in the hockey tournament at Bay Shore. Their first practice and league games with Babylon and Huntington, score of 2-0. The second Bay Shore and the Flash- of the season by a score ability was shown in the Shore. Out of ten com- respectively, were lost by a league game was played at ettes won their first game of 3-1. Their real playing hockey tournament at Bay peting teams, Sayville took a well-earned second place. ARc1Hr2Ri'- Wliat a shot I ! I , Hit the bul1's T E N N l S eye Y I l . This was the type of talk you heard last spring during lunch hour and after school when the field could always be found cluttered with girls eager to practice or try archery. Sayville's enthusiastic archers shot beautifully, and successfully defeated the veteran teams of Bay Shore, Central Islip, and Babylon by the scores of 1468- 1388, 1252-796, 1051-863. respectively. VOLLIZY BALL If you happened to wander into the gym and see a large group of girls screaming and jumping about, it was probably the volley ball en- thusiasts battling it out. Four class teams were picked for the out-of-town games at Bay Shore, Huntington, and Babylon. The senior girls fought some strong battles, but lost all three games. The junior and freshmen teams won two of their games, while the sophomores lost all of theirs. ARFHERY HOCKEY BASKETBALL The Flashettes had a very successful basketball season. They played six interscholastic games and were the victors in all of them. Their first opponent was St. Josephs Academy of Brent- wood, who were easily defeated by the Sayville girls 58-11. Next our girls played Center Moriches and won by a score ot 25-9. More exciting than any of the games played so far was the Port jefferson game. The score was very close and it wasn't until the last few minutes of play that Sayville pulled ahead to win by a score of 51-25. The Flashettes travelled to Kings Park where they claimed an easy victory, winning by a score of 27-13. The Bay Shore sextet tangled with the Sayville team and Sayville won with the one-sided score of 35-12. 'J W iw ,- 1' 1,7 he ' xl v-V , ' , .
