I4 l il HICS lo GlOl'y TRACK: For the second straight year Sayville High Schools track team failed to lose a single dual meet, Our squad did, however, lose its County Crown to Riverhead who walked away easily with first place while the Flashes finished second, The 1946 campaign had many outstanding stars- john Nagy, George Neyssen, Gene Boniberger, Don Campbell, Bill Colson, Frank Rosch, Peter Rickert, and john Neyssen. john Nagy, who usuf ally won the 100 and Z2Ofyard dashes in the dual meets, came through to place first in the 2'lOfyard dash at the Suffolk County meet with a very good time. We could always depend upon George Neyssen and his younger brother John to come through with flying colors in their respective races. George was not beaten in the 44-Ofyard run until he lost the Long Island Championship. George was also our star broadjumper. john Neyssen was by far the outstanding fresh' man on the team. In Iohn's Hrst year in Sayville High he made a name for himself by competing in the mile-run in which he tasted defeat only once, and that to Riverheads truly great miler, Bob Palmer, who went on to take first place in the Long Island Meet. Flying Flashes Gene Boniberger, a miler from the pref vious year, moved down to the halffmile run and ran with just as much enthusiasm as in the previous year. Gene won every halffmile event except the Long Island Championship. We could count on five points from Gene in every race. Don Campbell came through in the high jump by winning the County Meet at the height of live feet seven and one' half inches. Coach Case was quite worried at the beginning of the year because he lacked discus throwers, but this worry was soon remedied by two tall seniors namely Frank Rosch and Peter Rickert, Whenex'er we needed points, Rosch and Rickert would kindly accommodate. Bill Colson, Sayville's ace pole vaulter, kept climbing higher and higher, continually clearing the bar, until he reached ten feet six inches. Bill will again be around next year with the chance to improve his record. Despite the loss of George Neyssen, Don Campbell, Pete Rickert, Frank Rosch, Boe Greene, Corky Caspari, Seymour Bialer, George De Piazzy, and George Leigh-Manuell, the Sayville Flashes are still going on to try to make it three un- defeated seasons in a row. Although the odds were against them, they battled courage' ously against players with far greater experience and practice. With more emphasis on this sport. and added practice and coaching, we can look to' ward a better showing from the tennis department. Sayville had five home games with La Salle, Bay Shore, Stony Brook, Port jeff ferson, and Huntington, who in turn entertained Sayville on their'home courts. x . n lhillinl tluc llrr-vzc BASEBALL: Vvith five returning veterans on the squad, the Vvfenkmen of Sayville High finished with three wins and five defeats at the end of the '46 season. Things were not always black for Sayville High: George Spruce, Norman Brady, Lou Scuitto, and Gus Hubal helped a great deal to brighten them up. Sayville took it on the chin from a few teams, but they proved that they could also hand it out by dumping Northport 10 to 1 and shellacking Lindenhurst 14 to 5. George Spruce, a member of the All-star team for two successive years, was by far the most out' standing player on the team. He not only played a steady defensive game at first base, but could also power that ball at the right time. Sprucy , along with Gus Hubal, had the distinction of hit' ting successive home runs on four different occaf sions during the campaign. George led the team in almost every department. Norman Brady was Sayville High's star center fielder. A yearis experience seemed to do a lot for Norman, He not only bettered his batting average from the year before, but also improved his fielding, Lou Scuitto roamed the right field position for the Sayville nine. Lou never swung for distance. but just tried to drop the ball over the inheld which he did quite often during the campaign. Gus Hubal held down the hot corner for the Weiiknieii of Sayville. Gus could always be def pended upon to play a steady and smooth game at third base. As mentioned before, he could hit homeruns along with George Spruce. Gus carried a respectable batting average too, This coming season Sayville will not have the first baseman, George Spruce: catcher, Fred Pickard1 shortfstop. Charlie Beck: center field. Norman Brady: infielder, Dick Susa. The students will be looking forward to such He batted well over 300, led in homeruns, twofbase hits, and total base hits for the year. Ackerly's name was to be third in all dual and triangular meets held except the Bellport meet. The usual fourth one in was Joe Cradischer, a first year man who showed promise of being a fine runner. Dick Burt and Bill Swanihack were usually within ten feet of each other at the finish. Both proved of real value to the team. Sayville's first opponent was Bellport. Al Cauf dier was their one threat. hut Boniherger won hy a wide margin. Neyssen placed third, Ackerly fourth, and Swamhack outran Burt. Patchogue, second on the list, saw the Triple Terrors in at their respective positions of first, second, and third, Gradischer fifth, and Burt ahead of Swamhack. During this time, everyone seems to spend any and all free time at the pingfpong tables playing in the regular girls' tournaments. It is with great skill that these girls maneuver their paddles as the hall flies back and forth over the net. And have you seen some of those spins that our experts put on the ball? Our girls' pingfpong team is dehnitely one of which we can be proud. BOWLING: To the Northpolelu was the signal cry heard from our energetic girl bowling fiends last March. As the ball rolled down the runway, it came in occasionally for a crash landing, and another strike was chalked up. These tireless enthusiasts ended their successful season with the idea that bowling is not only good exercise, but also an interesting pastime. T , SOFTBALL: Wiiigiiig in on the soft, scented, spring breezes came girls in shorts again. This time they were armed with bats and balls. Repref sentatives of all four classes joined in, and from these ranks emerged a competent, well organized squadron of lady batsmen. These feminine slugg' sters really sent that bali off into the wild blue yonder and proved their abliity in the games with neighboring school teams. VOLLEY BALL: When old man winter was los' ing his ferocity and spring was poking her head out from behind the snowfbanks, the girls' intramural teams switched from basketball to volley ball. Over the top seemed to be their cry as they hit the ball sometimes high and sometimes low, but always over the net. They gained experience and confidence in their intramural games and these, when pitted against neighboring schools, gave Sayville the 'upper hand. This all sounds very simple, but such was not the case for this year's small but eff ficient club. We seemed to have had our share of hard luck with regard to publication of this hook which you now see before you. Starting out with the usual spark and enthusiasm, many good ideas came flying ing but, after much discussion, we bailed out all but the one which now appears in the log. Now then, let us enumerate those hardships we encountered. First, because our class was unusually small, so was our yearbook club. Thus to meet the handicap of too few hands, everyone agreed to work harder, With the first difficulty out of the 1 way, we looked for a new one: this time it was the cover, We had been warned about how last years class worried because they had no cover when the book was ready to be put together. Vv'e were def termined that this sort of situation wouldn't happen to us so we set out right at the beginning to find a satisfactory cover for our very satisfactory book. And we found one-a very nice one too. With these first two barriers tackled, we felt we had the situation well in hand. But then through no fault of our own, the yearbook photographs were held up in production, So we worried some more' oh, the futility of it all, It seemed that the 1947 Sf1g11'1'Ilr' Senim' was just doomed. We sat on pins and needles for eight weeks, waiting. And then on April Fools Dayu we were informed that the pictures had finally landed at Babylon. Could you blame us for not believing it until we opened the package and actually held those precious photos in our hands? We then worked like beavers in order to get the book to press and to you at the scheduled time. In spite of it all, we enjoyed every minute of our workf -'--- our little disagreements, our planning and writing, selling the ads to make the book possiblef but above all the jolly good humor and persistence of our fellow workers. And so here it is, barriers all surmounted. We feel fand hope you'll agreej that our earnest efforts have been duly rewarded in the production of a fine book-one of the best ever. It is with due appreciation that we wish to thank the 1947 Yearbook Club and our faculty advisors for making this book possible. lI,..l., Ildyylygg 5Lifiiiui'!liiQ llui' l llQlvl 4 n 1 L 'T I Il I1 L 'Il 1 'V llf'lllQ Bulllll SPANISH CLUB: The Spanish Cluh, whose mis' sion is to help further the Latin and South Amerif can policy through Sayville High School, plunges into its work every other VV'ednesday noon with Mr. Heeter at the controls.
