Man has always been a teacher: the history of the world confirms this and the future of mankind demands it. To teach others, however, presupposes that man begin with himself; for unless the individual teaches himself that there are many ways “to know” and many facts and con- cepts “to learn,” he can transmit no worthwhile knowl- edge to anyone else. The man who“knows” is not as valu- able a contribution to a society as the man engaged in “knowing.” Teach the world by beginning with the self— —what each man is, the world can then become. —Dr. Marie Parnell Dr. Marie Parnell, Principal Mr. Homer Dill. Throughout history, man has attained new heights in science and technology and has in- creased his knowledge of life. However, the de- velopment of the qualities of friendship, broth- erhood, and trust are just as vital to our existence. In our three years of high school, we have learned these qualities, and now it is our responsibility to the world of the past as well as to the world of the future to use them to create a better life for ourselves and others. Every step we take toward the betterment of ourselves teaches us how to take greater strides toward improving the world. While this task may seem enormous, we must re- alize that each human being is a world in himself, that we can teach the world by teaching individ- uals and thus attain our ultimate goal. However, to teach successfully, one must be willing to live in the spirit of his knowledge. To teach broth- erhood, one must be friendly. To teach love, one must be loving and to teach kindness, one must be kind. It is only through the development of these qualities in ourselves, a task which has been the responsibility of our teachers and which now falls solely to each individual, that we can hope to create a world of peace, brotherhood, and happiness. All this, “I would like to teach the world ...” —Bonnie Downs Editor-in-Chief 5
