DR. MARIE PARNELL Principal When the first hourglass was employed to measure the pass- age of time, the ancient in- ventor of that new marvel was undoubtedly more concerned with its practical relation to time than to the future analogy which it would suggest to suc- cessive generations. Time, we are told, is an elusive, transi- tory commodity, which offers no guarantees. It is, then, like an hourglass: we no longer have that time which like the sand has settled in the bottom of the glass; nor do we know that we will have that time, symbolized by the sand in the top of the glass. Our only certain time is the grain now—at this moment —passing through the center of the glass, and this is what we must make meaningful. The NOW is what we know, and though it bears a relation to the past and the future, it must be lived with purpose and with certitude if we are to make our time a positive contribution to the generations which follow us. HOMER DILL Assistant Principal 8
