SAYREVILLE FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY. 1050 WASHINGTON RD. PARLIN, N. J. 03859 THE SENIOR CLASS of SAYREVILLE WAR MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL SAYREVILLE, NEW JERSEY Presents . . . “An aim at the future is an enjoyment in the present” —Alfred North Whitehead 1861-1948 Seniors Underclassmen LINCOLN SCHOOL The oldest school building still in use in 1964. One of the four that were in use when Dr. Pollack became Superintendent of Sayreville. Each year Dr. Pollack estimated the cost of educa- tion for the following year. He then would work with the Board of Education to prepare the budget which would be submitted to the voters. WILSON SCHOOL The first high school whose curricular and extra curricular activities were ex- panded under Dr. Pollack. One of Dr. Pollack’s main interests was the implementation of the im- provement and expansion of curricu- lar offerings. The growth of the com- mercial program exemplifies this in- terest. He supported the shift from courses simply in stenography and typing to the present offerings which include provision for on-the-job train- ing and locating employment for stu- dents after graduation. SAYREVILLE WAR MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL The last of four new buildings that Dr. Pollack worked actively in the plan- ning and erection. He lived to par- ticipate in the ground breaking cere- monies of the most recent addition to the system, a new Junior High School whose completion is planned for Septem- ber. 1967. Dr. Pollack was genuinely interested in sports and constantly approved plans for the improve- ment of the health and well-being of the stu- dents. He was an enthusiastic speaker at each annual banquet given in honor of Sayreville’s athletes. Dr. Pollack and Miss Samsel formed an efficient team. Together they served the Sayreville school system for many years. DR. RICHARD S. POLLACK Superintendent 1945-1964 Time is an elusive thing—it is past, present and future. How we utilize time is the most important function known to mankind—for his destruction or for his salvation. We hope that those who are leav- ing Sayreville High School have learned that each single moment, as it ticks by, is not to be ignored— for the moments make the years and the years race by swiftly. VINCENT J. ABBATIELLO Superintendent First Row: T. Unkel, W. Farrell, R. Rauth, J. Kupsch. Rear Row: J. Skwira, D. DiPoalo, E. Hayden, L. Weston, F. Uszczak, J. Stanik. Comprised of nine elected officials and aided by a superin- tendent, an attorney, and a secretary, the Board of Education strives to continue the growth and maintain the prosperity of Sayreville’s educational system. Board members are concerned with all aspects of school life ranging from administration, facidty, and maintenance to extra- curricular activities. On behalf of the Class of ’66, the Quo Vadis staff extends to the board its sincere appreciation for its efforts in bringing progress to the public schools of Sayreville. BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. ROBERT FLEMING Board Secretary 7 DR. MARIE PARNELL Principal When the first hourglass was employed to measure the pass- age of time, the ancient in- ventor of that new marvel was undoubtedly more concerned with its practical relation to time than to the future analogy which it would suggest to suc- cessive generations. Time, we are told, is an elusive, transi- tory commodity, which offers no guarantees. It is, then, like an hourglass: we no longer have that time which like the sand has settled in the bottom of the glass; nor do we know that we will have that time, symbolized by the sand in the top of the glass. Our only certain time is the grain now—at this moment —passing through the center of the glass, and this is what we must make meaningful. The NOW is what we know, and though it bears a relation to the past and the future, it must be lived with purpose and with certitude if we are to make our time a positive contribution to the generations which follow us. The practical aspects of English are stressed for students who plan to take jobs immediately after graduation. For those who plan to extend their education, emphasis is placed on the special skills and literary background needed for this subsequent work. Provision is also made for the study of ad- vanced techniques and materials by students who have special ability and interest in English. This method is based on the principle that foreign language assimilation follows the basic patterns by which we learn our own language: hearing, repeating, reading, and writing. The first course familiarizes the student with elemen- tary rules of grammar through the use of dialogues. The second year increases vocabulary by means of reading, discussion, and written work. Third and fourth courses allow the student to read literary works and discuss them as well as write creatively about them. 13 LINDA BUONO B.A. JOHN FROUDE M.Ed. FRESHMEN With swift precision, the Class of 1969 has adjusted to the pattern established by its predecessors. Long gone and for- fotten are the troublesome locker com- inations and confusing corridors. Though only grains at the very top of oui four year hourglass, their downward journey has already proven to be enjoy- able, profitable, and memorable. With the election of four able class of- ficers, and under the guidance of their advisors, these underclassmen readily got into the swing of things at Sayreville High. Their voice in school affairs was channeled through their Student Coun- cil representatives. The freshmen candi- dates for “Teens Against Polio,” although not victorious, netted approximately two hundred dollars. Beginning to look to- ward the future and tne senior class trip, much planning went into the first social affair held by this ambitious group. Both the great time had by all and the profit cleared showed that the Freshman Dance, held early in the spring was only one of the many successes to Be had by the Class of ’69. 94 Confusion A La Freshmen The Pride of the Frosh — “The Baby Bombers” ADVISORS Mr. John Froud, Mr. Theodore Wy- braniec, Miss Susan Duschock, Mrs. Doris Resh. But perhaps the most favored event was “Opposite Day” which was held in conjunction with “Blue and Gray Week.” Without disregarding the dress code, the frosh were easily distinguished bv their merry mixture of polka dots and plaids, two different socks or shoes, or back- ward, upside down, and inside-out ap- parel. With such a terrific start, this class surely has the makings for three more even better ones. May it be so. FROSH T.A.P. SOPHOMORES Approaching the half way mark of their hourglass, the sophomores have nothing but pleasant memories to look back upon. Returning with more con- fidence in themselves as a class, all worked together from September to achieve much. The usual elections took place, placing the most popular and capable students at the helm of this class. Sophomores contributed heavily toward their can- didates in the “Teens Against Polio” campaign. “Roaring Twenties” was the theme of the Class of ’68 during “Blue and Gray Week.” An Honorable Mention was awarded for the originality of the sopho- mores in overall competition. February 12 brought the traditional Sophomore Sweetheart Dance, the first semi-formal affair sponsored by these underclassmen. The crowning of Sweetheart King and Queen highlighted the evening. The coming of spring also brought the com- ing of a new-found status — class rings were ordered which will arrive early next fall when the Class of ’68 will gain new prestige as upperclassmen. With these added responsibilities, we hope they also find much luck and suc- cess with which to carry on. This has been proven by the juniors, tne Class of 1967. Now that they have filtered through the narrow half-way mark in our hour- glass, they have willingly accepted the added responsibilities thrust upon them as upperclassmen. With the arrival of the traditional class rings early this past fall, this group has become readily aware of the many priv- ileges brought by this new-found status. As juniors, tney were able to become part of the political turmoil associated with Youth Week. Leads in the junior-senior musical were opened to them. Perhaps the highlight on their schedule was the planning of the long-awaited, unforget- table Junior Prom. By adding that “extra something” when called upon as a whole in school activ- ities, the juniors were twice victorious in school affairs. Wholeheartily emptying their pockets for a good cause, their class contributed the most in the T.A.P. cam- paign. Once again answering the call for class spirit, but this time in “homespun” granny dresses, holsters, and headdresses instead of money, the Class of ’67 walked away with the top prize in “Blue and Gray Week” competition. Composed of four officers, elected representatives from each of the four classes, and honorary members who have shown great leadership ability, the Coun- cil meets bi-montmy for regular meetings. Delegates also attend the Middlesex County meetings and the Convention at Rutgers. This year, the Student Coun- cil has the distinction of being a four year honor school. Under the direction of its advisors, Mrs. Angelica Marra and Mrs. Irene Arthur, the Council has spon- sored assemblies, held two dances, conducted a “Teens Against Polio” drive, and a “Save the Chil- dren Federation” Clothing Drive. To the Editorial Staff, the beginning of September till the end of March was a period of last minute deadlines, hunts for pictures, feverish typing and cap- tion creativity, as the twenty-fourth edition of Quo Vadis was compiled. “Time,” the link to the past, present, and future, was chosen as the yearbook theme, and the staff busily went to work adapting it to all facets of life at Sayre - ville High. Art work, write-ups, and pictures were all co-ordinated with the theme, since the element of “time” revolves about every school day. Never to be forgotten in the hearts of the Quo Vadis staff and the senior class is Mr. James Todd, yearbook advisor. For without his consoling smiles, infinite patience, and knowledgable guidance, the creation of this book would not have been possible. Once every month, a burst of enthusiasm on the part of anxious students floods the normally tranquil school building, as the circulation staff of Sayreville High’s news medium distributes the current con- tributions of its creative counterpart. Echo-Lites reporters, notebooks nearby, are always on hand to cover newsworthy events and submit for publication detailed accounts of their observations. Other staff writers deal with human interest aspects of news items and the personalities surrounding the news, as regular feature columnists provide humorous and entertaining sidelights. Scores and summaries of athletic events, as well as editorial comment, com- prise the contributions of the sports staff. Opportu- nities for photographers, cartoonists, and typists are also available for students with skill in these areas. Outstanding staff members may compete for edi- torial positions and look forward to election to Quill and Scroll, the National Honor Society for High School Journalists. Standing: Dennis Sommesse, the voice of the radio; John Januszewski, Major Metcalf; Joanne Wasilewski, Miss Casewell; Dave Ballog, Mr. Paravincini. “How can you tell I did it!” DIRECTOR Miss Suzanne Duschock CLASS DRAMA The Mousetrap ” Cries of terror, a mysterious detective, a lurking murderer, and a booming radio, mingled with the snowy, stormy night to create a suspense-charged at- mospnere in the auditorium of S.W.M.H.S. on the evening of December fourth. Agatha Christie's play, “The Mousetrap,” held the audience spellbound as a young man, portrayed by Joe Kolsby, was compelled to murder two women at a snowbound boarding house out of revenge for the mistreatment of his brothers and sisters. Ironically, the murderer pretends to be a detective named Trotter and “investigates” the deaths. Hailed for their realistic portrayal of the occupants of the inn were Marge Lehnert as Mollie Ralston, Vince McCarthy as Giles Ralston, Joan Mazurowski as Mrs. Boyle, and Dave Ballog as Mr. Paravincini. Other members of the cast were Mike McCarthy portraying Christopher Wren, Joanne Wasilewski as Miss Casewill, John Januszewski as Major Metcalf, and Dennis Sommesse as the voice on the radio. Deserving praise for their contributions to the suc- cess of the play were the director, Miss Suzanne Duschock ana many other students and faculty mem- bers who aided with makeup and scenery. 109 Mother Abbess sadly informs fun-loving Maria that she must leave Nonnberg Abbey. THE SOUND OF MUSIC “J think that teas your line.” “You mean you dont know any songs at allF From the first enchanting strains of the Nuns’ Chorus sing- ing the “Preludium” to the finale with Mother Abbess and the Nuns singing “Climb Ev’rv Mountain,” there was no doubt that the auditorium of S.W.M.H.S. was truly transformed by “the sound of music,” on the evenings of March 24, 25, and 26. The audience was held spellbound as the story of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, presented by the junior and senior classes, was unfolded before them. The setting was Austria early in 1938, and the action revolved about Maria Rainer, a fun-loving postulant of Nonnberg Abbey with a knack for indecorous behavior and a passion for singing. Maria is sent out into the world by the Mother Abbess on a probation period to test Marias desire for a religious vocation. She becomes the govemness for Captain Georg Von Trapp’s seven children and brings jov, happiness, music, and love into their regimented household. The Sound of Music will be long remembered for the charm, delight, songs, dances, and heartwarming emotions that were tightly interwoven about the cast and felt by the audience. DIRECTORS Miss Zdanewicz and Mr. White 110 Harmonious voices ring out Marias and George's Marriage. The roles of Maria Rainer, the Mother Abbess, and Captain Georg Von Trapp were portrayed by Stacey Thalmann, Alice Kolb, and Gary Boyler, respectively. Susan Cox portrayed Elsa Schraeder, the wealthy socialite engaged to Captain Von Trapp, and Alfred Pawlowski played Max Detweiler, the clown of the family. Liesl, eldest of the Von Trapp children, was portrayed by Sandra Campbell. Robert Maher had the role of Rolf Grufcer, Liesl’s first sweetheart. The young children were portrayed by students from the elementary and junior high schools. Tne stu- dents cast as nuns, folk dancers, and grand waltz members also contributed to the excellence of the production. Once again this year, Mr. Charles White directed the entire production with the aid of Miss Ruth Zdanewicz, assistant di- rector. Music, choreography, makeup, and scenery were prpvided by various teachers and students. Junior and senior classes ex- tend their gratitude to all these people who contributed to the great success of “The Sound of Music.” The Start of a Lively Pep Rally ASSEMBLIES Resounding cheers, dancing reindeer, magical words, agile athletes, and college-bowl quiz snows are all a part of the variety of assemblies which are presented to the student body at various times of the year. In cooperation with Miss Ruth Zdanewicz, the Student Coun- cil is generally responsible for most of the assemblies presented. Aiming to instruct as well as entertain, the assemblies add a note of joviality and interest to a regular school day. 112 Behind the scenes — With “masked” reindeer? WRESTLING SCHEDULE WRESTLING Three medals, a trophy, and a third-place over-all team standing was not too bad a season’s fare, especially when regular competition saw Sayreville’s matmen with a 1-10 win-lose tally. Led onward by coaches Robert Decker and Lynn Paul and the varsity co-captains Doug Dvorsky and Ted Zeh, numerous individual achievements were attained during the 1965-66 season: Ted Zeh, at 178 lbs., garnered both the countv and district championships; Len Zaleski was the 168 lb. runner-up for the district title; co-captain Doug Dvorsky and freshman Mike Stanjeski took third- place honors at the same tournament, while late-comer John Wisniewski came in fourth in his weight class. Standing third among seven teams in the district and eighth out of the nineteen competing schools in the county tournaments, the Bombers snowed that they should not be judged solely by the win-lose column, but by effort. With the varsity berth controlled by under- classmen who will undoubtedly improve with experience, the future years for this sport look promising. Coaches Decker and Paul. Opp. S.H.S. Coaches Wortley and Reichenbach are hoping for another Central Jersey Group Championship. If they reach their goal it will be the second year in a row that Sayreville has taken the top honors.
